The little firebug from Drummondville who was excellent in the Memorial Cup. Nice!

For the record, our third centre in five picks. Fourth forward. They are balancing the stable.

You know the old scouting story about going in to watch one player and coming away liking another? Well we've got a couple of those for you this month.

First up is Drummondville. Red Line's chief scout has spent considerable time there this season eyeballing (obviously) stud D-man Dmitri Kulikov and, to a lesser extent, fleet-footed winger Philippe Lefebvre. But every time we see the Volts (and it's been a lot), we keep coming away impressed with sparkplug winger Gabriel Dumont. On a team loaded with unbelievable offensive firepower, Dumont rarely sees much more than third line icetime, yet always manages to get himself on the scoresheet.

Indeed, he has averaged close to a point per game (24-20-44 in 48 GP) and plays every shift as though it might be the his last. His great passion for the game shows through constantly and he might be the best and most dangerous penalty-killing forward in the Q.

The knocks are his size/skating combination. He's smallish at a generous 5-10/180 and lacks the explosive burst you'd like to see in a guy that size. But he gets where he needs to be and makes up for his shortcomings with unlimited energy and work ethic, hustle, smarts and a really good feel at the offensive end. He's a guy we'll be rooting for come draft day this June.

Absolutely love this pick! This guy could turn out to be a skilled Steve Begin. After watching the Memorial Cup, this guy always got my attention. If this kid makes the NHL, he's going to be a fan favourite guaranteed!

This is a great pick. Maybe he will get to play for Coach Boucher in Hamilton in a couple of years!

I like warriors who bring work ethic to a team, and this kid does not seem to take a shift off.

A little from Coach Guy Boucher during the Memorial Cup (translated by a poster on another site). The kid was playing hurt big time!!

The coach of the Voltigeurs, Guy Boucher, did not need a reminder to talk about Dumont after the game: "Gabriel is the soul of our team, It does not surprise me that he was the one scoring the winning goal. He is without question the warrior of the year; I've been involved in this league for a long time and I've never seen a player with such a strong character."

On RDS, Boucher added another layer of praise by saying: "Its time NHL scouts wakes up. Dumont is a machine". Gabriel played the tournament [Memorial cup] despite a serious shoulder injury, an ankle sprain, a broken toe, a knee injury, two muscle strains, muscular elongations to two fingers and a wrist injury. You say a machine? That's an understatement!

Read this on TSN

"He's a heart and soul player," Canadiens scouting director Trevor Timmins said of Dumont. "He went through the playoffs and the Memorial Cup on one shoulder."

The five-foot-nine 170-pound Dumont had 28 goals and 21 assists in 51 games while skating on the Voltigeurs' third line this season. He is more of a battler than a skill player, and is sometimes compared to Max Talbot, the small but feisty forward for the Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins.

And Timmins said his skating is better than he gets credit for.

"He'll find a way to play in the NHL," Timmins said.

Gabriel Dumont - Drummondville RW
We absolutely love the way this tough little nut plays the game. Small but fearless, plays with phenomenal energy and passion, as if every shift might be the last of his life. Maximum hustle at all times. Gritty little team sparkplug. Tough to check because he's always in motion and keeps his feet moving. Aggressive in puck pursuit. Works hard defensively and effectively disrupts the passing lanes on the PK. The best penalty killer in the Q, and very dangerous shorthanded. The knocks are his size/skating combination. Lacks optimal size and the explosive burst you'd like to see in a smaller guy. But gets where he needs to be and makes up for shortcomings with unlimited work ethic, smarts, anticipation, and a really good feel at the offensive end. Extremely productive - on a team loaded with offensive firepower, rarely sees much more than third line icetime, yet always manages to get imself on the scoresheet. Red Line's favorite sleeper.
Projection: Versatile 3rd liner on upper level club.
Style compares to: Maxime Talbot

I'm really stoked about this pick. I know that he will likely never amount to much more than a 4th liner, but man! This guy is character personified. A true little ball of hate. I wanted the Habs to pick Lapierre as much in 2003. Here's hoping they have similar career paths.
