I believe he is inquiring with teams as to their players availability and cost, but I don't believe he is pushing hard to acquire anyone. I don't mind him not buying because that would cost us future assets. I also believe there are more teams calling about players on the team that might be available. Markov, Briere, Bourque, Gionta. If he makes a move, and I do mean IF, it will probably be a contender looking for some veteran help down the stretch. As for bourque, someone to wash jockstraps. He can't get anything for Markov or Gionta because they're about to become UFAs. No one would trade for Briere. I'd keep Bourque. He was fifth in goal scoring in the entire playoffs and the Habs are short on scoring. I wrote that before the trade deadline

What do people think of Brad Richards. Wasn't all that impressive in the playoffs but always liked the guy. Not at the money Sather was paying him but presumably would be much cheaper now.
And how about Sather the genius: Gets so much credit for Mcdonagh which was fluke but no one mentions Richards , redden, Stanley Cup winner gaborik, and he originally signed Gomer. How does this guy keep his job. I;m thinking he was able to convince Rags owners of the Richards buy-out after they made so much money in the playoffs which was really dumb luck - coin toss again the Flyers, should have lost to the Pens, and injured Price and still should have lost to the Habs.

Yes, the Rangers could be one of the teams that takes a tumble next year. St. Louis one year older, some players having an off year. Habs shouldn't take a step back. Emelin had a generally bad year and he won't repeat that, Eller had a horrible year and won't repeat that. We should see little or none of Murray and Bouillon, which gains us a lot of possession time. Bourque can't possibly have as bad a regular season. In fact a lot of our guys had poor years. Price was great and bailed us out. PK had his moments, but I can't think of many others who had what I would call a career year. None, perhaps?

The Rags will only go as far as Lundquist takes them. Speaking of bad signings, how pathetic was Girardi? Will be interesting to see which FA Sather wants to give the Richard's money to. Vanek?

We've seen that the Habs didn't really need Vanek to get as far as they did, so making another trade like that us essential. What has to be done? Follow Bergeron's original plan. Get more draft picks and move up in the drafting order! There are no new Galchenyuks in the pipeline but that's what the team needs (not to speak of a young Markov}.

I have to disagree on the point that we didn't need Vanek to get as far as we did. Vanek moved everyone down the pecking order a spot. That meant they were now playing against guys one slot below players they were normally up against, which made it easier for them. Even if Vanek himself didn't contribute much, he affected the rest of the team.

I thought Eller was one of the better Habs in the playoffs. Was I wrong? Eller had solid playoffs. He was excellent against Tampa, very good against Boston and average against NY. If he can keep up some consistency he will be a very solid 3rd center who can replace every once in a while on a 2nd line and contribute in the playoffs. Strong acquisition from Pierre Gauthier I must admit.

I think Eller-Weise-Bourque is a perfect place to put Bourque, he is not a primary scorer. he'll be with 2 other big bodies and if he takes an off night it won't be crucial. When it comes to the first 2 lines here's where MB needs to add this offseason. As of right now we have: Patches - DD - Gallagher Galchenyuk - Plekanec - _______ I would like to see this: Patches - DD - Gallagher Saad - Galchenyuk - Yakupov Weise - Eller - Bourque Moen - Prust/Briere - White/Tarnaski Subban Tinordi Markov Emelin Beaulieu Weaver/UFA Price Budaj/Tokarski There's been rumors that Chicago was looking at Spezza. If so why not Plekanec? He's better defensively and on the PK. Would give Toews less defensive responsibility. Main players in the deal would be Pleky and Saad. As for the Oilers and Yakupov. Give them Gorges with Pateryn. Helps there D corps, there Pk and for us we take a chance Yakupov and Galchenyuk can regain junior form together. Of course none of this will happen but this would be my Armchair GM lineup.

I think Eller-Weise-Bourque is a perfect place to put Bourque, he is not a primary scorer. he'll be with 2 other big bodies and if he takes an off night it won't be crucial. From my observations of Bourques play last year, I have a couple of concerns with that statement. Firstly, while no one can be at their best for every game, I'm not a bit proponent of giving players a mulligan for having a night off. Secondly and more importantly in Bourque's case, he doesn't just take a night off, he takes a couple of weeks off. Or at least he did last year. I don't think he has a history of being as unproductive as often as he was last year. I still don't like, though, how often he cancels an offensive foray by making a bad play with the puck. I'm still all for moving him at the earliest.

I'm still all for moving him at the earliest. Eller and Bourque, two of our best forwards in the playoffs, were two of our WORST forwards in the regular season. You may disagree, but I honestly put more weight behind production over an 82-game season than I do over a 17-game playoff run. Eller's problem is still an inability to translate his considerable skills into consistent production, while Bourque is a weak motor and lack of intensity. Both guys have questionable hockey IQ. Which is to say you can't count on them, and if Bergevin is shaping his off-season plan based on how much production he thinks he's going to get from the existing roster then I hope he's being VERY conservative. Saying bye-bye to Vanek and keeping everything else intact, and hoping we see more offense from guys like Eller, Bourque, and Galchenyuk is a recipe for failure. I still think Berg has the raw materials to swing an aggressive trade - some combination Pleks, Eller, Beaulieu, Tinordi, Gorges, picks/prospects could be dealt to add a top 6 forward (James Neal) or a top 4 dman (Tyler Myers). I think we need at least one of those types of players if we are going to make a push next year, especially of you assume Vanek is gone.

On That's Hockey tonight they had a segment on the Jets trading Kane. Said they are looking for a center, depth on the blueline and possibility some help in net. They never said Montreal, but the Habs are deep down the middle, could move an Elemin or Gorges, maybe even a Tokarski.

No doubting his talent and skill. If Montreal were to do a Plekanec + Gorges/Emelin for Kane, I'd want something back. Kane is also listed as a center in some places, but I'm pretty sure he plays wing. Plekanec + Emelin Kane + Bogosian Jets get a fair bit older in the deal, Habs take on more cap hit. Still, we likely have to add. Throw in our first this year. Leaves us with: Pacioretty-DD-Gallagher Kane-Galchenyuk-? Weise-Eller-Bourque Prust-White-Moen Gorges-Subban Markov-Bogosian Tinordi/Beaulie-Weaver(?)

According to reporter Gary Lawless, Jets are looking for young top 6 forward or young top 4 D as the basis of any deal.

Isn't Kane a bit of a head case. Doesn't seem like an MB kinda guy.
What do people think about going after Stastny, and hard, as a FA? His Dad might have told him some good things about La Belle Province- the Habs ,not so much.

Montreal could be a bad place for him if he doesn't have someone looking out for him (if he hasn't started to grow up). Stastny is a center isn't he? Not sure how he fits an already over filled part of the roster.

If we can land Stastny then we can deal Pleks and/or Eller for a top 6 winger. DD, Stastny and Galch would be great first 3 centres, all of them moving into their prime.

Just checked and see Stastny was earning $6.6 last few years. Presumably he's going to be wanting/getting more. He's about a point a game guy which is something in this era. I'd pay him $7 maybe 7.5 as he's 28 moving into his prime. He was born in Quebec so MB gets some Quebec content out of the deal - can we say hometown boy?

I'd take him over RJ Umberger who just return Hartnell. After failure in playoffs many clubs are trying to add at center, copying the Kings, notably Black Hawks and Ducks.

Stastny is a roadblock for Galchenyuk unless we move at least two centers. If we move Pleks and Eller, we've got DD, Stastny, and Galchenyuk. Which of those three becomes the checking center? The only way Stastny works is if Pleks, Eller, AND DD go. That isn't happening imo.
As for Kane, he's still got decent hands. Certainly no worse than the majority of our roster. He's only 22 as well.

After Kings success many clubs are pointing to their skill and depth down the middle as reason beating Hawks/Sharks/Ducks. Teams are coveting quality centers more than usual. Also like Stastny size over DD and Pleks and like don't have to give up assets to acquire while on other hand being able to receive top trade value for guys like Pleks or DD. But clubs like Hawks/Blues/Ducks/Leafs among others will be opening their wallets big for Stastny. I see no chance he chooses here.

Decent all around speed. They play hard, and they completely buy in to the system. Add in a great goalie and bang. If the Sharks had Quick, do they still lose that series (granted Quick was not good early in the series). Sharks are pretty deep up the middle. The Kings also played three 7 game series to get to the final. Gotta get some bounces for that to happen.
