This is good info, Christrpn ... by change, where did you read this on Vanek? Cheers. Read it in the twitterverse, I'll try and find the tweet Brian Wilde reported that the Vanek to Wild rumor might not happen after all. Wild not too impressed with his playoff performance so any offer coming from them will probably not be in the area he is looking for. and he earned every penny of potential drop in salary.

He should have quit when he was ahead. He had the money in NY. Now he has to live with the decision. He will get much less than Market value in Minnesota, but there are 14 teams that didn't make the playoffs and need fans in the seats that would pay him big bucks to come. He'll get what he wants.

Sometimes players don't work out. It's not necessarily a development problem within the organization itself. I don't know if they took him all that seriously, Matt ... they just never freed up any room for the guy despite him having an excellent camp ... Cheers. I don't know if we have enough information to really speculate what went wrong. Not being able to make the team despite an "excellent camp" shows that there's more that we don't know about.

"excellent" is right. I don't believe he played well enough to pass over Bournival. He'll have his shot in Anaheim. We'll soon know if MB was right or if he'll turn out to be another Kyle Chipchura. A career fourth line player.

I read that Vanek, Murray and Parros will not get offered contracts. Well I heard there was a secret chord That Vanish played and it miffed the Berg But you don't really care for hockey, do you? Well it goes like this: The fourth, the fifth The hockey fail and the money gone The baffled king composing Hallelujah Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah... LOL. Look at Cranky throwin' some Leonard around. Well I'll echo your thoughts with some Bob: Goodbye’s too good a word Thomas So we’ll just say fare thee well We ain’t sayin’ you treated us unkind You just Vanished but we don’t mind You just kinda wasted our precious time But don’t think twice, it’s all right

Should also mention that reports out of Minny (Puck daddy) now say Minny may no longer want to spend the money on Vanek after his poor playoff performance. Apparently he may no longer be in the driver seat. He may end up resenting his stint in Mtl more than we resent it.

Therrien knew, after 4 games post trade, that Vanek just didn't gel with Plekanec. He knew that he had a great line in DMV. Vanek and Pacioretty struggled to score in round one, and Therrien gambled by splitting them up. It didn't work, and he stubbornly chose not to reunite. Game 6, down a goal, in the third ... Vanek's finishing run may affect his value. I'd still offer him a healthy contract because as has been beat to death, if not him where do we find the offense? Sign him, put the line that works back together and be done with it.

LA and NY did not have the most talent. They simply out worked Pittsburg, Chicago, San Jose, Boston and the other teams with more talent and less desire. Give me Gallagher and other workers that may lack talent or size, but want to win. Dreaming about signing talent instead or character is not the road to the cup!

To win, first you gotta get in. Getting in means scoring some goals. All the character in the world isn't gonna win every 1-0 or 2-1 game. LA went out and got Gaborik, found a place for him in the lineup where he had chemistry, and left him there.
Many times, the best move is the one you don't make. Leaving DMV together might have been the best move. The move MT made certainly didn't work, and at no point did he admit by putting it back together.

Bournival earned his spot fair and square ... what I referred to earlier was how the signing of Briere used up a roster spot that could have gone to Leblance ... and at one point in the season I also thought that Leblanc could have easily provided what Gionta did ... to be fair to Gionta, his second half and his playoff run were pretty darn good ... I really think the only way Leblanc would have made it would be if he outplayed Bournival (a good point for sure), or if Bergevin hadn't signed Briere ... Cheers.

Leblanc doesn't have the body type to play his style of game at the NHL level in an efficient manner. Good luck in Anaheim.

Leblanc doesn't have the body type to play his style of game at the NHL level in an efficient manner. Good luck in Anaheim. Spot on. In the WJC, he looked quite good because he was good along the boards, but in the NHL, the players are so much bigger and he can't use that style effectively. He's not quite average size and he doesn't have the speed to make up for it. He's got a high hockey IQ, but it can't make up for the physical shortcomings. His best position is centre, though, and we didn't use him there. It would be interesting to see how he'd look in a 4th or 3rd line role at centre. Maybe the Ducks are interested in him at that spot. One worrying part that may allow him to be successful elsewhere is that he didn't look that bad in a Habs uniform, but he was not good at all in Hamilton. That could be due to the coaching he was getting there and that might come back to bite us. With good coaching, we might have gotten a 4th or 3rd round choice .

Pierre McGuire "Pulling Louis Leblanc out of Harvard after one year was ridiculous." I'm not a big McGuire fan, but I thought the same thing at the time. The knock on Leblanc was that he wasn't strong enough, and that needed to spend some time bulking up. I've never thought that playing Junior hockey was the best place to do that, not with all the games they play and the travel. There is only so much time in the week. You can't be loading up the bench press bar for a super-set three hours before a game. On the other, college, with it's lighter game schedule and heavier focus on practice and work-out time, was a better avenue for Leblanc in that respects, in my opinion. People said that Harvard wasn't a "real hockey program" and that the "competition wasn't strong enough" but that didn't seem to affect Alex Killhorn who is a regular in the NHL, nor the slew of other Leblanc teammates who are now in the AHL. The competition was more than good enough, in my opinion. I don't always get the obsession with getting players out of the NCAA and into Major Junior. It smacks of Canadian elitism, if you ask me. It's not that bad a development route. There is no cookie-cutter approach; some guys should stay in the NCAA, some guys should move to the CHL. I thought Komisarek and McCarron should have stayed in the NCAA, for example, while I think Tinordi was a good candidate to move to the CHL. It depends on the player, and I think McGuire was right in that Leblanc would have been better served spending another couple of years at Harvard. Having said that, I don't know what went wrong with Leblanc. He's played in the NHL, and he did not look out of place. As noted he was very good this past preseason. I don't know what happened to him, or why he was not well regarded, but to me he certainly looked like he could have played for us last year.

Let's face it, if you or I was a young player (and not white haired wannabe defenseman geezers), we too would want to be traded if we thought the team had no confidence in us. MB better not have screwed the assessement pooch on this one.

Interesting article by Hickey in the Gazette. Appears there was was a mismatch between what Leblanc thought he was - top six forward- and what the current Habs management & coaches (including in Hamilton) evaluated his talent as - 3rd line center. Apparently Leblanc didn't buy into that evaluation & so didn't put out the needed effort. Also didn't develop physically. Here I don't fully agree with Bad Co. One of the main things he should have been doing in Hamilton was building up his body & he didn't according to Hickey. He's only 23 & in the NFL when most players are drafted at 21, 22 years old they still need to spend a year or more getting stronger so they can maximize their potential. So Leblanc still had plenty of time to make good progress on this in his 3 years in Hamilton. Bergevin is quoted as saying that Leblanc had to realize “there are a lot of third-line players making a good living in the NHL.” So it's pretty clear the biggest problem with Leblanc as far as the Habs were concerned was his poor attitude and lack of lack of hard work to fulfill the role they saw for him. And the younger players working harder just passed him by. A lot of "scorers" in junior don't become top six forwards in the NHL as the competition is so much tougher. So to make they NHL they have to adapt their game to be more defensive in character. Clearly Bergevin & company thought this was the case with Leblanc & he refused to accept that. Now Doc may be right and he may develop as a top 6 forward in Anaheim. But I would still support Bergevin on this trade as I agree with the "team first" culture that he is establishing in the Habs organization as his first priority. And Leblanc was a "me first" player. Maybe the trade for a 5th round pick will wake him up. On the "team first" aspect it's pretty clear how important that is to Bergevin. I am sure he knew full well the dollar risks associated with signing Subban to a short term contract but at the time Subban's "me first" attitude was a concern even among his team mates. Now Subban in his comments stresses the importance of being a team player. So he will cost more for the first 2 or 3 years of his next contract but he will be a good fit with and a leader of the team first culture Bergevin establishing with the Habs. Cheers

To further habsask's point, a lot of AHL scorers don't make the NHL as scorers. Look no further than Carbo. He scored in droves at the AHL level, and had two extremely good seasons in Halifax. Perhaps he gets a chance to be a scorer at the NHL level with another club, but Montreal saw him as an elite checking center. Hard to say they were wrong, given the career he had.
