I'm not happy and i'm taking bets he will not make it past 2. So if Molson wants to waste money and it doesn't effect the cap - that's his loss. MT should give 50% of the money to Carey!
Not a good day for Habs fans with MT and LL. hopefully that's all the bad news for awhile!

Mb couldnt not extend him given how the team has played the last 2 years. He can be let go at any time with no cap implications.

Amazing the hate MT is getting on this board. I may not agree with all of his decisions but it's unrealistic to think that I would agree with all decisions regardless of who's coaching anyway. When you look at his record, it's hard to argue about the results so far unless you were expecting a Stanley Cup final this year which imo would have been dellusional to start with. Some will point out that he didn't play enough of Tinordi or Beaulieu to speed up their progress but I would argue that the NHL is not a development league. The coach wants to win games and eventually make the playoffs. There is also other factors to take into consideration when coaching. MT could not ignore Murray, Bouillon, Moen or other vets all season long and make them look bad without repercussion in the room. Team spirit is important and the way respected veterans are treated can and will have an impact on the results we see on the ice.
So all in all, I was satisfied with how MT handled the team and I am happy that he is getting paid for his good results. Coaches do get fired at one point or another so who cares whether or not he gets fired before the contract expires. Well, actually I do care. If MT coach through the whole duration of his contract and get another extension, this will mean the team will have enjoyed great success and really, this is all I can hope for.
Congrats MT on a well deserved contract extension!

Inconceivable!! Pass the iocaine...
The guy had his behind saved by Price and later Tokarski night after night. He's outcoached almost every game and it shows every time the goaltending is less than superb. I wonder what PK thinks of all this?

MT could not ignore Murray, Bouillon, Moen or other vets all season long and make them look bad without repercussion in the room. That guy who would argue that it is Therrien's job to develop his youngsters would be me. Part of my job as a manager is to develop the employees I supervise. My role is to improve their skills so they can move on to bigger and better things, including replacing me. Now a hockey coach is a bit different in that his players aren't going to replace him, but he has to groom them to replace aging, expensive players. MT proved my point these very playoffs. When Emelin got hurt, we had nothing, nothing to replace him. Cube is a shadow of his former, barely adequate self, we had to play PK and Markov way to much, so they were gassed by the time we hit the Ranger series. Those decisions to keep playing Murray and Cube instead of playing Tinordi and Beaulieu more came back to bite him (and us). I had no illusions that Therrien was going to be let go, but I think this year may have been one of those seasons where a lot of things come together well (especially PK and Price and Markov's rebound). I still question Therrien's management of his players and his line-ups. I guess we'll see in the coming year whether he can keep up this series of 'right' decisions. I hope he turns into the second coming of Scotty Bowman, cause if he does, we'll be celebrating more than one cup victory. Right now, I'm not so confident.

I question the ability of any coach who looks at the group of players we have and in between periods of a game berates them and tries to convince them they're a grinding team.

The only thing that gives me hope, the ONLY thing, is that I think in the playoffs MT finally figured out what makes this team good. When the Habs are rolling they are team that plays a good possession game at a quick pace. Keep the puck, controlled zone entries, speed, transition..... those are things we did very well in the 2013 season only to abandon them last year when we were one of the worst even strength scoring and lowest Corsi teams in the league. I thought I saw signs that MT was getting it in the playoffs. He played Beaulieu because he knew deep down that Bouillon and Murray both suck and he needed to try and win games. He put Eller at centre because that's where he belongs. Other than Vanek, he resisted the temptation to mess with a good thing.
I don"t think Daryl Sutter in LA is a great coach, but he's smart enough to know when he has a good thing and to just stay out of the way. Therrien needs to let this team play to their strengths, if he can do that then I can hold my nose.

I think all fans hate their coaches to a certain extent, he's the guy standing between the fan and his fantasies...
"Play Galchenyuk at center, he'll get 90 points we'll win the Cup" - and then the coach doesn't, so it's all his fault.
While MT ain't perfect, he seems to have improved with experience, and tries to send different messages, different ways. The whole "grinding team" quote was, I believe, just a way to try and make the guys put in effort and not just go for pretty, talent-based plays.
As to developping kids.... we hate Jacques Martin for not doing it enough to our liking, we hated every single coach I can recall for that very reason.

I liked Demers. he was a player's coach who fell victim to a few too many egos and a country club locker room.

My problem with mthead is that I don't see him as neither a strategist nor a teacher. Average Price and we are bottom ten. Second, 90% of the time he makes the obvious moves that are routinely written by posters who don't even have the benefit of reading the room. Third, drill sargeants don't make generals. Nor win wars.

No harm in giving him some financial security. Can be fired any time and only hurts Molsons bottom line

No harm in giving him some financial security. Can be fired any time and only hurts Molsons bottom line I disagree with that to the extent that if he really sucks next year and the team is facing missing the playoffs, there will be a lot more patience exhibited by Berg than if he had a 1 or 2 year contract. The cost plays a large role in the decision to keep a coach or remove him. If it turns out that the extension was a mistake, we'll be saddled with that mistake for much longer than we want. I don't understand the 4 year extension. Two, or even 3 years, would be more logical and would keep him working hard to maintain his level of success. How often do we see players cruise after signing a long term contract? Do we really expect coaches to be any different?

Was MT going to turn down 3 years? Did he have somewhere else to go? Maybe it's 4 years at $50,000 a year. Then I'm good

Just listened to Bob Mckenzie.....to paraphrase...
.....This is a classy move and if they have to relieve him of his coaching job in a year or two or three, he will be well compensated. It's a tough job in a tough city.
Not a single complimentry anout Therrien. No complimentry word about MB decision. Nothing. Not even ONE! Gee, I wonder why?

The extra playoff revenue from this year would probably pay his salary for 20 years . I'll be surprised if he makes it, and that's not a slam, 4 years plus what he's already served takes him well past most coaches best before date. We'll never have a coach that everyone agrees with.

Tortarella got 5 yrs in Vancouver. Was let go after one. Carbo got a few yrs as well before Gainey let him go in the first. Question is, will MB eat crow when it doesn't work? Will he fire him when he sees s#it hit the fan? To me a coach extension is just a way for the organization to show confidence in the coaches ability. The salary is guarantied, the term isn't.

as his signing is a 4 year extension; TSN is reporting that it kicks in after the 3rd & final year on MT's existing contract.
MT is signed through the 2018 - 2019 season ... 5 years from now.

If he doesn't make it past November, it will be a very costly decision. Don't give a used banana peel if it costs the team money. It's MB fault. Any GM with a few firing neurons would not give MThead a 4 year extension simply because MThead has ZERO options.
