I've always liked the heart and soul players and Gorges is one of those guys that gave his all. But it's easy to overvalue these types of players and I think that's what we did with Gorges and even Ryan White for that matter.
I don't think the organization overvalued them, buds ... Gorges was signed to his 6-year extension by Pierre Gauthier back in 2012 ... with four years left I think Bergevin took that into consideration when dealing him ... I thought Ryan White's days were numbered with the club when he was signed to nothing more than a one-year extension ...
They're both slow, unskilled and uncreative. It's time we develop a heart and soul team rather than rely on a handful of guys to display these characteristics.
White had his good points ... he was pretty good on faceoffs and he was always willing to 'take one for the team' so to speak ... Gorges played a lot on his off-side (backhand to the boards) and he had pretty good chemistry with Subban before he was injured ... I'm not saying he didn't have some bad stints in Montreal, but there are other players who did, was well ... as far as building a team with heart and soul, I can't say for sure, but that's what Buffalo may have planted by landing Gorges (A) and Gionta (C) ... I have no idea how White or Gorges will do, but I wish them well ... IMHO, Gorges didn't just "display" heart and soul, he practiced it regularly and it might be why he was so well respected in the dressing room ... he doesn't deserve the "don't-let-the-door-hit-you-on-the-way-out" routine and I didn't see the organization do that ... it was a business move more than anything ...
Cheers.
