Berg certainly has options with respect to Plekanec. He's still a very good player and with only 2 years left on his deal ar $5 million a year, I think he would be an attractive pickup for a team looking for more depth down the middle.... which is a lot of teams. Pleks still gets a bad rap, though. I think he gets criticized for not being "tough" or as good as Patrice Bergeron, but not many guys are. His career PPG in the regular season is 0.65 and in the playoffs it's 0.61, which is pretty solid. He's also durable and has scored at least 20 goals in 7 of his 9 seasons in Montreal, all while taking the toughest defensive assignments of anyone else on the team. I would just as soon keep him, but for the sake of moving foward, getting the most out of Eller, and opening up a spot down the middle for Galchenyuk, I think Pleks would be a good asset to move and we could get something good for him. I'm on board for keeping him. Pleks has limitations in terms of physicality, but is still our best all around forward night in night out. He along with Gionta played the toughest minutes among Habs forwards last year, regularly lining up against the best players in the east and holding their own. We've let Gionta walk, but losing both he and Pleks would cause significant problems on the defensive side of things IMO. I think that Pleks is a solid #2 centre on a team with a legitimate number #1 centre (sorry Desharnais). As much of great story as his is, DD is the odd man out IMO.

Eller should be very happy with his new contract. I have a feeling he'll try to live up to it. His showing in the playoffs convinced me of his worth to the team.

Anything in return for plekanec would be considered a lateral move. Prospect and pick? A blue chip prospect? Two picks? a high Pick? Unless he is involved in a move that also send a Tinordi/Beaulieu the other way. In that case we might get a 2nd/3rd line winger in return. We have to be careful what we wish for. We don't want to be in the same situation as Chicago, but without the cups.

I think it’s a risky deal… getting 3.5M for a guy who so far is a twentyish pts player... is highly surprising… I still don’t know what we have in Eller, contrary to most, I don’t think Eller compares well to Plekanec in the sense that Pleks is the epitome of low maintenance player: he can be used in any hockey situation, on any line, with any linesmates, his game will remain the same. On the other hand Eller appears mentally fragile as he is extremely sensitive to any type of change in his assignment or linemates… such changes can trigger never ending funks where Lars completely loses his game.
...as for his defensive prowess... being the worst +/- player on the team kinda takes away some of that "aura"...
…he is however our biggest and most physical center (when on his game), yet I really hope we don’t end up with a 3.5mil Manny Malhotra… while 3.5 doesn’t appear to be a whole lot on a 70mil cap, too much of those 3-4mil contracts on ordinary players means we’re in a bind to afford top shelf players… even our own…
Not sure at all about this one.

I would have tried a 1 year contract around 2.5 million. Bourque looked great in playoffs too but we know he can't hold it long term

I don't mind the signing but if JKR's numbers are correct, I don't see Eller in Montreal by the third year of his contract ... the cap hit remains the same throughout, but the payouts significantly change ... if Eller attains 40-ish points as a 2nd-line centre that would put him in a similar position Plekanec is now ... an affordable, experienced 2nd-line centre that would free up the cap space Bergevin seems to like having ... I'm only guessing on this but I looked at what Gorges situation it sort of suggested what Bergevin looks for in making decisions ... he looks at salaries, it seems ... mind you, if Lars were to produce 60 points it might lessen Bergevin's options ... a good thing in this case ... Cheers.

Pretty much sums up my opinion as well. While the dollars involved aren't huge, this is one of those deals that might look really good or really bad in 3 years, and will be a good way to rate if Bergevin properly evaluated the guy he has today. But I'm not sure he won't be traded in a couple of seasons for a bag of pucks, to someone like the Coyotes, with 20% salary retained...

Elliott Friedman's 30 thoughts from October 28th, #5 on Lars Eller...
"Two years ago, when Marc Bergevin took the Canadiens’ job, he said he got plenty of calls about Lars Eller. Not sure that’s changed. Now that Alex Galchenyuk is moving towards being a full-time centre, other teams are wondering what Bergevin’s plan is."
Must been interest in Eller back then...wonder if he would fetch a decent return?

I kind of disappointed that he doesn't have better linemates ... he keeps toiling away on the 3rd line but there's not too much he can do with that ... he's playing behind Desharnais and Plekanec ... wonder if there'd be any interest in DD ... Cheers.

Good point franko but I think it was more the dumb dumb penalty which he can't be goaded into taking.Pretty sure this is more strategic than anything Eller has responded to discipline and he can play better despite the 17ton hindrance. That being said give the guy some help and encouragement at the same time ...put Bournival and Sekac on his wing before the guy gets totally buried mentally.

HFTO True, but DD took a dumb penalty the game before without needing to be goaded and wasn't benched. I wonder how Eller would work with Pacioretty and Gallagher as his linemates instead of Bourque and Weise.

Ray Ferraro was on 690 yesterday, said Eller doesn't have offensive vision to be 20 goal scorer? Ferraro said he scored over 400 NHL goals mainly because he knew where to go on the ice. Said its hard to explain, he could sense how to get in the open and good position to score. He's been watching Eller and says why he goes there, he has no chance to score?

Could be Gnick. Eller has always been a better assist guy than a goal scorer. It would help if Therrien didn't enjoy yanking his chain so much and just let Eller relax and play.

I think Eller feels that he has to go into the corners to battle for the puck, has to get into the dirty areas. Instead he should be playing his position letting the winger's do the dirty work. He should be covering the points waiting for the pass or waiting to head back to the defensive zone in case they loose the puck.
