"It's hard to make the NHL ... it's even harder to stay ..." Marc Bergevin to Nathan Beaulieu and Jared Tinordi ...

That's the style of a confident, focussed, competent GM.

Don't let Cranky watch that video. MB was quite clear that he is comfortable with his team's toughness and there is no need for an enforcer. I guess he didn't like the Parros experience/experiment.

The league is shifting towards team toughness now. The Flyers and the Leafs both have no designated goon anymore. Your fourth line needs to play 10 minutes a night, play on the PK and chip in with an odd goal now or then. That's why the Prusts, Neils, Otts of the world are going to be more valuable.
Side note: The Habs had the 5 most fighting majors last year at 41. Only 7 or 8 behind the Leafs who led the league. Also the league now has the lowest fight per game ratio going right now and has been decreasing the past 5 years. (I think there was a small increase in the lockout year).

Are you talking about looking at his watch, Doc?
At first, I thought it was a sarcastic move because the reporter was taking too long to ask the question.
But it was just a jokey way of looking to see if there was still time to snag some thugs off waivers.
Bergevin, as a player, was reported to have been one of the biggest jokesters in the league….and was well-respected. As a GM, he rides the line perfectly, IMO. In control, but not an automaton.
Everybody's loose right now. Several nice moves have been made…his team made the semis last year…..all is good in Habland…..for now.

There is no need for a stage fighter like Parros but, make no mistake about it, there is a need for a policeman enforcer. When a joker like Borowiecki can aggress your franchise player without provocation, you need to do something about it. Team toughness is for the birds. By the way, Mark Bergevin looks a bit like a wino on that photo. When you're an executive of the Montreal Canadiens, you need to be a little more clean-shaven. Just my opinion.

Bergevin is great, I think I have a man crush on him. He's done everything right IMO since he's been here, he's like a breath of fresh air, from the day he arrived the team has been on the rise. Molson could not have chosen a better man for the position, he's competent, intelligent, likeable and savvy, also a pretty snazzy dresser. Seriously though, this team hasn't been in this good of shape in decades. Really looking forward to where we go from here, he certainly brings reason for optimism. Go Habs Go!

I'll disagree with you there, Bones. I think he's made several mistakes during his tenure......but..... One aspect of leadership is admitting your mistakes and doing something about it and I think you can safely say that Bergevin has done that. Oh, he hasn't come out and publicly said, "Damn, was that dumb, signing Briere", but he's more or less said that by his actions. He's made room for Beaulieu and Tinordi, even if one could argue that Tinordi hasn't been at his best this training camp. Then he follows that up by informing those two young men that it's hard to stay in the NHL, and that they have to get better. That's leadership. Honest feedback that players can work with. So from the standpoint of leadership, I'm very happy with Bergevin as well. If Connor Crisp works out as a decent 3rd/4th liner, we can then say he's looked after the Ferguson factor too. It's taking time, but as you've said, the team has steadily improved and keeps moving in the right direction. Timmins just has to keep doing his job exceptionally well to give Bergevin the flexibility to keep the team moving up.

Well said seventeen, indeed he's not perfect, he is human afterall. That said his "mistakes" haven't hurt us, even Briere scored some very timely goals for us last year including the playoffs. Nor did Briere's signing effect the teams ability to add a huge acquisition in Vanek at the trade deadline. As you said, he tried it, seen that he wasn't the perfect fit, and then moved him in the offseason, nothing ventured, nothing gained. I guess the point I was trying to say is, that despite these perceived gaffs, the team has been in steady forward momentum since his arrival. He's very hard not to like, or to not notice the great job he's doing. With his hiring of his staff, to his handling of the media, and the way he conducts himself.
He definitely has a vision and knows what he wants, I have full confidence that he's going to see it through, (whether it works or not) I admire that. This team deserves no less.
