The lousy PP will start to really hurt this team, it is costing us goals and it is allowing opponents to take liberties with every player on the including our MVP Carey because they know we can't hurt them on the PP.
What is wrong with the system being used?
What is wrong with the players being used?
I remember the Markov-Kovalev backdoor play on the PP that was absolutely golden. Could Markov-Glachy create the same thing?
MT better figure this out soon.

If the PP was Gallant's responsibility….then it must've fallen to Dan Lacroix.
Don't know if he ran the PP with the Rangers, Lightning, Bulldogs, or Islanders prior.

Maybe try what the 70's Habs used to do when their PP wasn't working ... don't practice it to death and put pressure on themselves when it doesn't work ... just a thought ...
Cheers.

So far, we've been relying on a solid PK and goaltending. Early on, we scored at a nice pace at even-strength…but that's ebbing.
No question the PP is a top priority.

As I've stated in another thread, I am tired of seeing our small guys in front of the net on a PP trying to screen the goalie. Why not put our biggest guy in front of the goalie. I would love to see Tinordi parked in front of the other teams goalie making life difficult for them, it wouldn't hurt to try it, our PP is doing nothing for us.

Why does the PP suck? That's the easy question. It sucks cause its a one trick pony. Gain the zone, pass it back to the point. Subban passes it to Markov, Markov passes it to Subban, Subban passes it to Markov and Markov feeds Subban for the shot. Amongst the play by play above, more often than not, the opposition hurries Markov and Subban and those back and forth passes are not that accurate.
Then you have Subban's shot. Oh, PK has a howitzer. But, let's be honest here, it is telegraphed. The opposition is using high-speed internet and PK is using Marconi's technology. They know it is coming, they defend it easily by keeping players high, and the Habs when they pass it low aren't accurate enough to make a cross-ice pass, or willing to go to the net and get banged up on the PP. Where was I? Oh yeah, PK's shot. So if the opposition is basing their entire PK-setup on stopping PK, and PK manages to get a shot ... well, he better get that puck on net. Here is where I see two issues. The first one ... PK is NOT accurate, not even close to being accurate. The stats say he has a 12.5% shooting percentage, and that is a real good shooting percentage. But that's only based on the shots that PK manages to hit the net with. He has 24 shots on net, 19 shots that he has gotten through and has been wide of the target, and another 26 shots towards the net that have been blocked. So that's 45 more attempts on goals. So PK hits the net once in every three shots, and scores once in every 23 shots. That's one issue.
The other issue I see is that when PK shoots, no one is near the net. It is all fine and dandy to be passing it around the perimeter like a basketball team, but when someone shoots, they have to wait or the other forwards have to recognize the shot is coming and get traffic to the goalie. The easiest way to accomplish this is to get the puck down low and force those high opposition forwards to support. When that happens, it opens up the back door play, and PK can move along the blueline to free himself for a more open shot.
Its Xs and Os ...so I guess the answer to the second part of your question is that it is the coaching staffs fault. The PP is the one area in hockey where you can use set plays and coaching does make a difference.

I agree completely, Skilly. I look at it by thinking, how often do the forwards create something that puts pressure on the other team? How often do they break down the opposing checker and get defenders running around? How often do they get a dangerous shot on goal? It's rare that they do any of those things.
I think they adjusted somewhat, but earlier on, you'd have one winger near the icing line on one side, the other winger near or below the icing line on the other side and the centre somewhere in the high slot. It's like they were all saying "thank god I don't have to get in front of those slapshots from the point". No forward was going anywhere to force a defender out of position. That means the D were always forced and always have a guy in front of them, so they're less inclined to shoot, or they shoot wide and hope for a deflection.
I don't think its a lack of talent, so why not just copy the better PP's in the league? Look at Tampa's, who seem to score a lot with the man advantage. See what they're doing and copy it. If it's not working (like the DD line right now), don't keep using that like a crazy person. Change it up. Put Prust in front (not Tinordi, who's not used to playing in front of the other net). He'll battle and make a dman work very hard, but he has enough skill to pass the puck around. Put Weise there. Don't expect DD or Parenteau to block the goalie's view. It just doesn't seem that hard to me to try something different. Let the skill on the ice do it's thing. Hell, why is Galchy getting so little time? IF there's anyone the other team would be concerned about beating a defender one on one, it's him, so that brings another option into play (if Therrien would let him do that on the PP. It's risky, but talented players pull it off often enough that it's worth it).
Yes, it's coaching. Almost like the guys are being held back rather than released.

17, I'm fine with Prust in front of the net, I just want someone with size who is harder to move than Gally or DD. How about a Patches-AGal-Prust PP unit with Markov and Subby. It would be cool to see AGal on the PP, with more open space he could do some damage.

no, you're all wrong. this is the way it is going to be done and eventually it will work. eventually the other teams will stop pressuring PS and let him shoot. dontcha know. yup . . . coaching . . . or lack thereof. I could stand at the back of the bench and do what MT is doing: "go our there and score. didn't work? try again. Rene -- give it another go, would you? thanks. Eller! Tinordi! what were you thinking? Galchenyuk -- where are you going? you've had your ice time for the night. Price -- make sure you make enough stops so that we can steal a point or two again tonight, would you?" I want to puke. at least I get to watch a real coach in action tonight -- I've been given tickets to the Sens game, and Quenneville and the Black Hawks are in town [tickets between the blue line and the net, 20 rows up].

It would be cool to see AGal on the PP, with more open space he could do some damage. The only habs forward who does put pressure on the D on the PP is AGal. He should be on the # 1 unit. I wouild like to see the low forward on either side drive for the net more with the puck. This causes havoc amongst the D and thus the forwards collapse down low. This is when Pk and Markov should sneak in for rebounds. Too much passing back and forth between high and low forwards. AGal is the perfect forward to do this. Just my thoughts

The guy that I've wanted battling in front of the net on the PP is Eller. I think he has the size and enough fight to do the job. Plus, despite his lack of production, he does have some offensive tools.
Skilly, I think PK deserves a bit of credit for improving his shot accuracy. He has come a very long way since his rookie year, and I would consider him nowadays to be an accurate shooter. If he gets the lane to shoot, it's on net. He was probably amongst the best in the league until other teams caught on and started taking away his lanes. PK's shot needs to remain a significant weapon on our powerplay. Over-reliance on his point shot is obviously a bad thing, but the point shot should be a big piece of the puzzle. Its a bit ridiculous that we don't have any other options out there, and that falls on the coaching staff. To me, it looks like the game plan is to pass it around until the opposition has forgotten about PK.
Personally, I would put Galchenyuk on the right half boards where Kovalev used to live. We really haven't seen much of Galchenyuk's shot but I can assure you it is elite. Let Eller screen the goalie since he knows how to crash and bang, and Pleks can be the smart passing center. My second unit would be DD, Pax and Parenteau - I thought they had decent chemistry together. DD and Max don't really seem to use Gally when they play together... a bit of a waste really.

To me it's rather simple: we don't put a secondary scoring threat who hovers near the faceoff circle and can penetrate the box and challenge the goal from the slot. Put Galchenyuk on the RW of the PP and get him to stay near the right faceoff circle (not along the boards, not in front of the goalie) that gives Markov and option when opponent cheat towards Subban.

THEY NEED TO MOVE AROUND AND NOT STAY IN THE SAME SPOT ALL THE TIME. Calgary's PP looked dynamic compared to ours. They were getting open looks on each PP.

MT's Official Whipping Boy Unless most of us are missing something that only the teach/coach would know…. ?

Yeah, that makes sense. Bourque plays and Eller doesn't. I think this officially makes MT a moron. Course, we don't know all that happened. Maybe Eller told MT to stick it where the son doesn't shine, something I'd wholeheartedly endorse, and then what do you do as a coach? I'm almost hoping the team quits on him and we go on a 10 game losing streak. What a twit.
You can accuse Eller of a lot of things, but not giving it an effort is not one of them. That's what Therrien has said annoyed him. Really? Just more excuses by the Great Manipulator or as I've seen him described elsewhere "Because Therrien". That's a great moniker.
"Why did you bench him, Michel?"
"Because".
Looking back, I think Bergeron giving Therrien the extension was a huge mistake. If you like him a lot, give him one year contracts. Giving him the extension has made him feel Invincible and now his warts from years ago will resurface all over again.
"I can do anything" Therrien. Quit on him boys. Let's see how he handles that.

Stagnant little movement everyone playing in the front row and never ever ever us somebody standing on top of the crease like so many other teams do to us. Time to change up the personnel as we'll Patches Galch and Gallagher plus PK and Markov MT should know he 's allowed to break lines up on pp to get your best personnel out there.

So if Eller is benched, does Therrien slot Bournival into his spot at center on the 3rd line? What does this do to the lines?

So if Eller is benched, does Therrien slot Bournival into his spot at center on the 3rd line? What does this do to the lines? Something I wouldn't put past MT….messing up two lines instead of one. Galchenyuk will be demoted to 3rd line centre….with Bournival and Weise. Bourque will get 2nd line duty with Pleks and Parenteau. In that scenario, the 3rd line should get 2nd line minutes.

Watching tonight's game , I saw two PPs where they spent the entire 2:00 mins trying to feed the point. There was missed shots, fanned shots, blocked shots, slap passes that were picked off .... All by #76, all on the PP. Oh, and on those two PPs, the Habs registered ZERO shots on goal, but for the most part kept possession. What does that tell you!
To me it's an over reliance on having one man always be the shooter. A man that hits the net only once every three times he shoots, and tonight it was worse than that. I'm not saying PK is the problem, but our supposed creative players are not looking to make plays, they are looking for #76. The solution? Take PK off the PP and force the other players to actually look for other things. Too radical? Ok, than how about not having PK play almost the entire PP ... Use Beaulieu for half. Last year, PK looked tired playing all that ice time .... and we will reap the rewards if we can develop another PP QB

Our PP woes appear to be systemic.
Habs sit 24th with a 9.4%…(0% on the road).
The Bulldogs' rank 26th in the AHL at 7.1%.
