Smoke has cleared, mirrors have been shattered. Pick your cliche.
This team is right back to being all goaltending…and really, it HAS been all season. Even during the playoffs…we'd have been swept by the Rangers if not for Tokarski.
Special teams: The PP is beyond dismal. Our discipline is also severely lacking.
Forwards: Morale perhaps low because of lineup selections, line combos? Weise on the first line. Bourque never benched/press-boxed. Pleks back to his usual perimeter play. Pacioretty not using his size. Eller….still can't figure out that guy. Is he the ONLY player being white-gloved? I still say we're going nowhere with DD as our #1 centre. Galchenyuk and Gallagher are the only ones delivering any kind of consistent effort game in, game out up there. Too many passengers once again.
Defense: Anything but stable. Subban is right off his game. Gilbert, Weaver, meh. TInordi and Beaulieu never playing enough to gain any kind of ground/confidence. Good thing Markov is still here. Emelin…nothing fancy...but he's been our only threat to at least hit hard back there.
Of course, coaching and management play a key part in all the above.
Right back to never knowing what to expect, because our work ethic over 60 minutes has been deplorable to date.
It'll take more than a win over Buffalowly to change my mind…and a loss will further cement the problems.
Discuss.

Poor work ethic, and poor coaching, mixed with some terrible penalties - earned and unearned.
I fully expect a motivated Sabres team tonight. Gio and Gorges will put money on the board to be sure.

MB said it would be a struggle this season... he knows the players and coaches and he called it. The concern i have is that the kids are not getting the ice time they need to develop because wecwill need them come the stretch to the playoffs.

It's a small sample but this is the worst they have looked since Therrien took over. 5 goals in their last 5 games, a god awful -12 goal differential so far this year adjusting for shootouts, poor possession metrics....
And this is Year 3 of the MB/MT regime and clearly the most talented and deepest team we've had. But the wheels are off right now and they need to get back on in a hurry. One thing the Habs have managed to do the past 2 seasons is avoid prolonged slumps. This is a big test.... and it goes beyond benching guys like Lars Eller.

where is the leadership?
as much as he was slagged on this board, it was acknowledged that Josh and Gio were in-room leaders last year; who is stepping in?

I was hoping the 4 As would be able to do something but it doesn't look like it. If the leaders aren't leading them it is up to the coaching staff.

Marinaro's ranting his way throughout the lineup/coaching.
On Weaver and Gilbert: (paraphrased) We got two guys on defence that the Florida Panthers didn't want…and they're playing every game! One of them gets second-pairing minutes.

I think this team will improve in a hurry if they get a couple of lucky goals and stop gripping the sticks so tightly. That will help right now. The long term is a different situation, but they're totally out of sync right now and usually that's because you're trying too hard and doing everyone else's job instead of just your own. I caught some more highlights and am still wondering why, when the Hawks criss crossed at the blue line, our guys kept following their man instead of switching. That was really poor communication or training or something. I thought it was basic, cause if you don't switch you get picked and lose your man. Duh.
Regarding the long term, I think they'll make the playoffs (too much talent not to), but they won't last long in the playoffs. I don't think our guy adjusts quickly enough to give the Habs a chance to win.

Barfalo . . . maybe tonight is the first PP goal on the road?

Is it possible that Gerard Gallant was THAT important in the Habs success last year ?
A question worth asking.....

Cement doesn't seem to be the right word to describe the effect of a loss to Buffalo. I see it as a spur to prompt remediation unless Bergevin is in lotusland. The team is playing as though chloroformed. Shut out by Edmonton! Nearly shut out by Calgary! Outplayed by Vancouver! Ravished by Calgary! Demolished by Chicago! Successive one-sided losses in home games is the sign of a leaky rowboat with only an empty tomato paste can available for bailing.
