Not happy with the loss but out of tradition believe a PGT is mandatory.
Didn't think we played all that badly. 4-0 was flattering to the Pens. We had some good play. Chucky and Sekac were our best players and a threat all night. We made some costly mistakes but overall I didn't think we were outplayed. Nothing seemed to be going our way even when we dominated in their zone which was not infrequently. I like our chances in a 7 game series against the Pens. Malkin and Crosby were not noticeable. Not sure if it was because we shut them down or they didn't need to be. Crosby played only 16 minutes!
Beaulieu was dreadful. I think he may suffer from the lack of focus syndrome which plagues numerous players, particularly dmen, who have lots of talent but lose focus easily. He brings little to the table if he can't be more consistent in his puck handling and decision making skills. Tinordi is a much greater asset with his size.
Now for the real difficult comment: what's with Max. I'm starting to look at him like Kessel. He's streaky which is not unusual for these snipers but he so often, like Kessel, is simply disinterested. He was not engaged at all tonight, yet again. Very much starting to wonder if he should be wearing a letter.

I completely agree with much of your post but in particular the last line. I wondered the same thing when it was announced. I miss the days of Koivu. Now there was a real leader.

Its a long season but real disappointing losses so far Tampa Chicago Pittsburgh the measuring stick teams and they basically got blown out.... tonight obviously not as egregious but the result the same.
I don't believe they are as bad as the results in these games but question the urgency and tactics. In all of them they have seemed tentative and have played a very reactionary game.
Next up St.Louis....lets see what they bring.

The puck is made of rubber and it bounces, sometimes in our favor and sometimes against us. We deserved better against Pitt and we're lucky against Detroit. Beaulieu has great skill but also makes mistakes. It seems his mistakes end up costing us, pucks bouncing over his blade at the point, weak passes intercepted, pinching and getting burned. It will take time and patience. MaxPac is streaky but Crosby went a few scoreless games before tonight. Nobody's perfect.

You could sort of tell it was going to be one of those nights. The puck just seemed to be bouncing Pittsburgh's way all the time, and they're such a dangerous team that you really can't make glaring mistakes like the first and second goals. They just don't miss those chances. Could have been a different game if Fleury doesn't make that stop on Sekac in the opening two minutes, but that's why they have goalies, right?

I'm not too worried, early in the game he was pretty involved, and I thought he played a bit of the power forward game we like to see from him (ie, he wasn't thinking he was Teemu Selanne). But like the rest of the team the intensity level went down as it became a rough night.

Price been blown out in 3 loses against top clubs, .818% save percentage in those games

A good start was foiled by a terrible pass from Nate and another turnover that led to the 2nd. Can't make unforced errors like that and expect to win.
I've felt similarly about Max from time to time. I will say that this year he's been better in that he leads the team in +/-, is a regular on the PK, etc. Still, when he's not getting bounces or prime scoring chances he could be more engaged.

When we lose, we do it with gusto!
In our 5 regulation losses, we've been outscored 25-3.

I wasn't happy with the score but I looked at the Laffs game and felt a bit better. If it takes a blowout to get them to smarten up I'm OK with that... especially if they go on to win 6 in a row afterwards. They better smarten up against the Blues, they always play us rough and tough and we seem to struggle. The game against the Blues would have been a good game for Tinner to be in.

Every time we made a mistake the Pens scored....sometimes we get away with them and sometimes....like last night it cost us. Our defence was not up to par last night, our back checking was slow and lazy, guys were out of position all night. Hopefully the coaching staff and the players go through the game today and address our holes because we have two tough games coming up.

We're far from perfect. Winning 6 in a row results in complacency. Losing by a wide margin brings us back down to earth. Playing an elite team highlights our weaknesses. Hopefully the coaching staff and the players can take a lesson from last night (and the earlier Tampa, Chicago and Calgary debacles) and figure out where things need to be improved and how to do it.

These results happen. It is what the team does next game that now interests me the most.

We didn't suck vs. the Pens (as did the Leafs vs. Buffalo on Saturday night)……so we shouldn't suck worse the next game (as did the Leafs vs. Nashville last night). Besides, I don't think MB's done tinkering yet. Always looking to improve.

As the boys said frequently in last year's playoffs: "Next game."
