It makes no sense. ... for example on the pp how much time does patches spend in the slot or a good shooting area? I see him spend way to much time beside the net or behind it... he's a shooter and needs to be in a position to shoot. And what happened to the backdoor play with Markov i haven't seen that on the pp in ages. I would like Markov and beau on the 1st pp and pk and Gonchar on the 2nd unit.
On the half wall we need a guy like kovalev who can control the board, back the defense up, shoot or pass. I say a guy like Sekac can do it. He's got the size, skill and passing.

I love gallaghers game but even when he's screening and Bishop is on his knees he can see over him. We need someone who can park in front of the net and not b I'd like to see sekac with patches and galchy on the pp. Sekac is strong on the boards, is a good passer and has a good shot. I'd even try Weise he's had good chemistry with patches. I'd give it a go ... heck, why not ... my memory escapes me right now (possibly the flu coming on) but have they tried the Sekac/Eller/Prust (or whomever) combo yet? ... I've watched a lot of the games recently and I can't recall them being given a shot ... Cheers.

Some one posted the following on another site and i was shocked.
How is the powerplay better on the road than at home when at home you get last change?

We have our PP guys, they have their PK guys. Those don't change whether they're home or away. The crowd shouldn't make that much difference. I'm confused (a common occurrence).

Because MT is secretly his biological father.

Galchenyuk Sekac Patches PK Markov ....best shooters size creativity...aside from the horrible shoot ins which they rarely recover and the ring around the rosy passing and badly forced passes with no shots on the PP why MT has these set guys is beyond me. Get your best players out there and make sure there is a net prescience if one of whom I mentioned can't do it find somebody who will....but for god sakes get a lot of shots not 1 or 2 or 0.
Makes no sense with the players they have.
If they had a deadly PP they would be lethal to play.

They really need to mix it up. I liked what they did vs the flyers awhile ago. Guy in the high slot. Worked well. The flyers pk at that time was brutal though. Even if it doesn't work as well vs better teams they have to at least pay attention to the guy. So predictable right now. Like someone else said, ring around the rosey.

Two months later and this thread is "stickier" than ever.
After the 0-4 January 10th game at home vs. the Pens…..our PP is now 28th at 13.7%.

I think it's just become one of those things that defy explanations. Sort of like the LA Kings having one of the worst power-plays in the league, and then winning the Stanley Cup. 27th in the league heading into the playoffs, with a 15% efficiency rate. That's with a Sutter coaching them, and guys like Doughty, Kopitar, Carter and Richards playing on it. They exploded in the playoffs and won the Cup. Hopefully that happens to us too. In the meantime, considering that the team is still winning, I would almost forget about practising the whole thing all together. Just get it out of their heads for a little while, so they can get the yips out. May not work in Montreal where they're going to be asked about it every single day, but in an ideal world that's what I would suggest. In the meantime, I know David Desharnais continues to be the whipping boy for the power-play ills, but when do we start pointing the finger at Brendan Gallagher? Consider: Power play points: Desharnais 6, Gallagher 2 (both assists) Power play ice time: Desharnais 93:46, Gallagher 91:03 I'm not trying to defend Desharnais, nor denigrate Gallagher. Just trying to point out that it's not all Desharnais' fault. Okay, maybe I am trying to defend Desharnais.

That falls to the centerman and the defensemen. Gallagher's job is to get in the crease, be a nuisance, and jump on the rebounds annoy the bejebus out of the goalie. If the defensemen shots are not getting through, and the centerman is losing the puck at regular intervals at the blueline, it would be rather difficult for the winger to accumulate points. Case in point, Pacioretty only has 4 powerplay points. I think it is time for MT to go back to the powerplay style of the 80's, where you didnt have standard lines on the PP ... Galchenyuk has 6 points on the PP as well, with fewer ice time, why not put him out there on the PP with Pacioretty?

Habs try new powerplay setup Powerplay shakeup at practiceI wanted this formation for a while so basically a 1-3-1 with a shooter in the slot. DD back on the 1st PP unit... lol... Michel 'leopard' Therrien tries to change his spots but really can't. I can't believe Sekac is not on in place of Pleky. When is Pleks supposed to get a rest, he is doing PP, PK and a regular shift, the guy will be finished by the time the playoffs roll around. Also, why is Nate not in one of these formations, I would prefer him over Gonchar, if only for skating speed. The only concern I have with this formation is at the end of the penalty, only have 1 dman on the blue-line and that could be Markov who doesn't have the speed he used to.

Has MT tried hybrid PP units yet...i.e. going away from the even-strengh lineup? I know he's used DD lately to make up a hybrid.
I'd give these formations a try.
1st Unit
Sekac Galchenyuk Pacioretty
Subban Markov
3 highly-skilled forwards with size.
2nd Unit
Gallagher Pleks Weise
Beaulieu Gonchar
Two crease-crashing garbage men.
Two different looks. If we can't score one way, we'll score the other way.

They have been practicing a "Diamond" formation PP, it's a high risk high reward PP, not many teams use it because a turnover can lead to a shorthanded goal. Detroit used to use it when they had Lidstrum or Datsyuk playing the point. I don't believe they use it anymore.
Other than Subban, I'm not sure I would trust anyone else to work the point.

Will we look back on Jan. 14 in Columbus as the starting point of our PP returning to the weapon that it should be? At least the confidence should return.
Having gone 0-4 prior, the Habs go 3-3 on the PP with under 9:00 to go and erase a 0-2 deficit to beat the Jackets 3-2.
Pacioretty in the high slot….Subban from the point….Pacioretty in the low slot with a re-direct.

Yes, we went 0-4 vs. the Sens in a loss....but hopefully our PP is getting back to where it should be.

I was looking at our Powerplay numbers today. I alluded to it in the game day thread but it is better suited here.
We've had 10 players who have scored a powerplay goal this year. Looking at those ten guys, I broke down their goals by how much PP time it took them to get a goal, and the how much time to get a point.
GOALS
1. Sekac - 33 mins - 2 goals - 16.5 mins per goal 2. Eller - 25.5 mins - 1 goal - 25.5 mins per goal 3. Parenteau - 84.5 mins - 3 goals - 28.2 mins per goal 4. Pacioretty - 162 mins - 5 goals - 32.4 mins per goal 5. Subban - 222 mins - 6 goals - 37 mins per goal 6. Plekanec - 130.5 mins - 3 goals - 43.5 mins per goal 7. Gallagher - 149 mins - 3 goals - 49.7 mins per goal 8. Markov - 201 mins - 4 goals - 50.25 mins per goal 9. Desharnais - 146 mins - 2 goals - 73 mins per goal 10. Galchenyuk - 129 mins - 1 goal - 129 mins per goal
Of course points are probably a better indication when on the PP, so let's look at points
POINTS
1. Sekac - 33 mins - 3 pts - 11 mins per point 2. Markov - 201 mins - 18 pts - 11.2 mins per point 3. Plekanec - 130.5 mins - 11 pts - 11.9 mins per point 4. Eller - 25.5 mins - 2 pts - 12.8 mins per point 5. Galchenyuk - 129 mins - 9 pts - 14.3 mins per point 6. Subban - 222 mins - 15 pts - 14.8 mins per point 7. Desharnais - 146 mins - 8 pts - 18.25 mins per point 8. Pacioretty - 162 mins - 8 pts - 20.25 mins per point 9. Parenteau - 84.5 mins - 4 pts - 21.1 mins per point 10. Gallagher - 149 mins -7 pts - 21.3 mins per point

For those that think the sample size is too small ... Sekac got 0:39 on the PP per game, so he had about 50 PP shifts
