You're a good man Dis!
While there won't be any PK fun, and that's everyone's loss, I'm confident Carey will give us something to laugh about. We often forget he's got a good sense of humour (albeit quirky at times) and I think has a good sense of the occasion and will embrace it for a few laughs.
Have to laugh at E. Giacomin and J. Plante with their pads. I'm thinking there might be a few more goals scored in today's game if the goalie pads were the same size. And what about Jacques five-hole?

In their 1950s run the Habs fire wagon style often left Plante exposed. If he were technically weak they wouldn't have been able to win five Cups in a row.

I watched the fantasy draft as I was putting up the video clips ... I really never gave it much consideration in the past but it looked like a well-organized event ... the players were having a lot of fun with it and the crowd was into too ... first time I really gave it some attention ... looked like a good time ...
Cheers.

Thanks man ... after reading Skilly's comment, I had to park my personal biases towards the AS Game because there are people here in the community that probably enjoy it ... hence the motivation for the thread ... yesteryear; I remember Giacomin just stoning us in the playoffs one year ... didn't matter what the Habs did, they just couldn't beat Ed G ... and the Rangers had Gilles Villemur waiting on the bench ... might have been the same year Ron Harris decked Ivan Cournoyer during a post-whistle scrum ... he kept his gloves on and "POW" Cournoyer hit the deck ... no penalty ... back in those days I used to watch important Habs games from the basement of my parents' house because I didn't want anyone around me if they lost ... don't have to tell you how a young teenager, like me, reacted to that ... they were good days, though ... Sigh!

Just have to accept the weekend for what it is: a bunch of very skilled athletes getting together for a good time and some laughs with the sport of hockey as the backdrop to it all. Trading Kessel for Seguin was brilliant. Pokes fun at both the Leafs and the Bruins management. I like it!

That was 1971-72, Dis….the year after we won the Cup. First year without Beliveau...first year with Lafleur….first year with Bowman…first round exit. I completely forget that series, no doubt because we were restricted to the Leafs-Bruins series….living where we did. I remember Dryden winning the Calder that year. Is he still the only player to win the Calder AFTER winning the Conn Smythe? The Rangers beat us in 6, winning Games 4 and 6 on Forum ice. Rangers were a solid team that year….and made it to the Finals, losing to the Bruins, who coincidentally beat the Rangers in Games 4 and 6 on MSG ice. Eddie Giacomin, eh? Always considered him spotty.

Sigh! I remember that Rags series (my math says it was 1972). The Rags celebrated like they had won the Cup - Eddie was doing this humping the ice thing at the final siren like some freak show. As a teenager I was wondering if that was normal.

Rangers also had the GAG line in full flight.
Hadfield, Ratelle, and Gilbert.

Excellent clip CH ... I remember hearing Espo saying that before ... the bad press they got from the Swedish media only bonded the team closer: Sweden
During a two-week hiatus, the Canadians played two exhibition games versus the Swedish national team on September 16 and September 17 at the Hovet arena in Stockholm. Canada won game one 4-1; the second game was a 4-4 tie. The second game included an outburst from both teams, which resulted in Wayne Cashman getting his tongue cut open, requiring 50 stitches and forcing him to miss the rest of the Summit Series, although he stayed with the team. The first exhibition game also introduced Canada to two West German referees, Josef Kompalla and Franz Baader. These two referees would figure prominently in Games 6 and 8 of the remainder of the series.
Team Canada was heavily criticized by the Swedes for its "criminal"-style play during the two games. The games in Sweden, however, helped bring Canada together as a team and focused them for the final four games.... here's a program from back in the day ...

Sorry Dis....I deleted my digression into Hadfield's Team Canada woes...and then to Espositio's clip. I thought it a bit of a thread hijack... But that's how conversations go in real life....so, next time I'll just leave it alone.

I know it's a love in and a not so serious time but the gimmicky breakaway competition has to go it's not entertaining in the least....I turned it off after that. IMO they could make things a lot more entertaining have 3 on 3 even a power play event obviously there would be no slap shots but it would be better than guys trying flip pucks on there sticks or blind folded goalies.
I only care because this two weeks is the worst in sports no hockey no football and no real golf tourney's and it would be nice to have a bit of interest in the NHL showcase. I'm sure with some effort put into it they can create better games even if the wanted to incorporate crazy gimmicks.
Cant wait until the real season starts it's pretty much every other night from here on in.

This weekend doesn't interest me at all. I used to enjoy it a lot. It's beyond stale now. I'm not sure what the best way to freshen it up would be. I think incorporating the Cherry vs. Orr game into the weekend would be a good start. I think back to Rendez-vous 87. It was a premier event. The novelty can't be duplicated, but what about a group of NHL stars against the world championship team from the previous year?
WRT the skills competition, I'd like to see them go back to a more serious break away event. Make it so there's an award for the guy who scores the most goals and the goalie that makes the most stops. Maybe you make it so the shooter picks the goalie he wants to shoot on. Kind of like calling your shot, you really challenge a goalie by picking the one you go against. Put some real strategy into it.

I wanted to put the results to the Skills Competition via You Tube, but there's six of them (I think) ... saw Jiri Sekac do his skate and he won his race ... I think he was 5th overall ... here's the results to 2015 Skills Competition ... Shea Weber with the hardest shot with 108.5 ... Cheers.

had to go out . . . radio was on the sports station . . . first thing I heard was "and he scores". almost before I could change the station there was another goal making it 12-9. more than enough for me. that was my total investment in the all whatever-star weekend.

I suffered through some 'highlights' during a Basketball game and it looked like no one really gave a damn, there was that little effort being put into the game. I was wrong about road hockey being more exciting....it's WAY more exciting.

My intent when making this thread was to provide those in our membership a place where they could catch up on the All-Star festivities here on HabsRus (rather than elsewhere) ... that said, the thread will be updated just as soon as all the results/films are released ... I'll also try to get the Skills Competition up as well ...

The best thing about this all-star weekend is that it gave me more time to focus on Genie Bouchard. Not a big tennis fan but somethings are almost as good as Habs hockey and a lot better than all-star game. Not a word of this to Mrs. Habsorbed!

Yes, there hasn't been a lot of sports on tv to distract us. The Australian Open and some basketball is about it. Oh well.

The KHL had their all star game and this goal in the skills competition kicks the ass of anything the NHL'ers did.
More on the spot creativity

Next year I'd like to see them do the draft "outdoor rink" style. Throw the sticks in the middle and then toss them to either side. Have one round for forwards and another for dmen.

I think they should have Rookies against the veterans. Both in the skill and the game itself. We all know the rookies will be playing to beat the "old" guys!!

Tavares gets 4 goals…Voracek ties Lemieux's point record with 6. Yet the fans vote hometown Johansen as the MVP…2G2A in a losing effort. Fine. 17-12. I read that Fleury allowed a record 7 goals in the second period…and the Columbus fans jeer-cheered him at times. Here's an idea….give the goalies the break from now on and use these:
