After Don Cherry's erroneous and insensitive comments tonight, I think every Newfoundlander should boycott Hometown Hockey tomorrow night .... have absolutely no one there at Quidi Vidi What did he say Skilly? Cheers. Don Cherry's 'barbarian' comments on eating seal creates social media outrageSports commentator Don Cherry created a stir on social media after giving his opinion on eating seal during Saturday night's Coach's Corner segment on the Hockey Night in Canada broadcast.
It was in reference to his colleague Ron MacLean, who is in St. John's for a Rogers Hometown Hockey event.
MacLean told Cherry he had eaten a seal burger, which was prepared by Todd Perrin of Mallard Cottage restaurant in Quidi Vidi.
Cherry joked that MacLean ate a "little baby seal," adding, "What are you, a savage, a barbarian?"
Social media was — and continues to be filled with outrage about Cherry's comments, with many people wanting him to apologize.
One user on Twitter posted, "According to Don Cherry, my Inuk friends are savages because they eat seal. The network should fire him for his racist remark." [this comment was from Matthew Coon Come] Another wrote, "I'm proud to be Inuk and to be called a barbarian is just unacceptable, Don Cherry you don't have the right to call me or my people that!"

When is Scott Moore of Rogers going to grow a set & fire this moron? How many people has he grossly insulted over the years? When is enough?

After Don Cherry's erroneous and insensitive comments tonight, I think every Newfoundlander should boycott Hometown Hockey tomorrow night .... have absolutely no one there at Quidi Vidi "Savages and barbarians". That statement should help him with his Order of Canada campaign. And MacLean just laughed. Anything different from Don's world view gets both addle-brained barrels of his shotgun mouth. I presume he's a vegetarian…yeah, right. He'll get away with it...by telling everybody to grow up, and that it was just a joke. But how thick is Don's skin? We've all seen him full of indignation, excuses and insincere apologies whenever he's been criticized or called out. He's thinks paying tribute to police, firefighters, and the armed forces gives him carte blanche to say ANYTHING! Here's the segment for those who missed it. Also some more apologetics for the Leafs....glorifying fighting once again (complete with slo-mo of a player getting his nose broken), a choice word--"JERK"--repeated several times in reference to Evander Kane. And the obligatory Me and Bobby McGorr mention. February 7, 2015

Don't know when the new modem is coming today so I hightailed it down to the local Tim Horton's and I'm filing from there ... the header thread has been updated less starting lineups ... the Bruins played a good game taking out the Islanders last night ... anyone know what time the Habs arrived in Boston last night ... I'm hoping it won't make a difference ... "Dailyfaceoff" has Price vs Rask tonight though this is unconfirmed ... I'll post the lineups either as soon as I get them or when the new modem is installed ... Cheers. Edit: Thanks to Tim Horton's for the free WiFi ...

Cheers. It was ignorance of his comments that got to me. 1.) no one eats baby seals 2.) no one kills baby seals 3.) it is against the law to kill baby seals Now, I don't eat seal. It is an acquired taste. But Todd Perrin is a re known chef. So I'm sure it probably tasted as good as seal can get. For someone, who likes to piggyback his name on the backs of our military, to insult an entire province, a province with the greatest percentage of military service men in Canada is unacceptable. To "kill a baby seal is barbaric", but to kill a man in the Middle East with no just cause (WMDs anyone?) is a-ok by him. I'm not even going to get into how pigs, chickens, cows, etc, are killed to fuel his restaurant chains ....

I wonder if someone went on the tv and said something about his wife (RIP) if he'd be ok with it. But it's ok to insult thousand of wives/moms of inuk descent. What a buffoon, and he needs to be removed from television for insulting Canada's indigineous people, but he won't be because he blows smoke up leafers butts And that's all that matters to the torrana based media

Here in Toronto he recently hire Dean Blundell to take Greg Brady's spot on the FAN590 morning show. Blundell was fired by the EDGE102.1 for homophobic comments but according to Moore , that's OK. www.thestar.com/sports/2015/01/20/dean-blundell-takes-over-morning-show-on-sportsnet-590-the-fan.html

I saw that part of the Cherry discussion and it didn't look or sound to me like he was joking, despite what the newspaper article says. It might be hard to tell with Cherry, though. What it indicated, yet again, is that he is probably suffering from dementia. I hope he's not still driving.
I never tire of watching that 7-5 comeback win against Boston. I wasn't lucky enough to see it live (they broadcast the Leafs game in BC. I don't remember at all who Toronto was playing, only that they last they mentioned of the Habs game was when it was 5-4 Boston. What comes to mind when watching those is how Beliveau scored two key goals and assisted on Ferguson's winner and just how little the team celebrated. No whooping or shooting a arrows or pumping chests, just tapping of ankles and some head grabs at the end. They no doubt celebrated much more wildly in private.

That was the night of the big Leafs-Rangers brawl…during which Vic Hadfield threw Bernie Parent's mask into the MSG crowd. Jacques Plante had to finish the game. I've read that Parent learned a lot from Plante that season and it really helped turn his game around.
Leafs won that game, I think….but lost the series in 6.

Very good point, 17 ... we're talking about a different generation of people ... their values and beliefs reflected in their respct of the game and their respect for each other ... BC mentioned how we've somehow lost the concept of shame ... I'll add that most of today's athletes lack humility ... it's more about the dollars than it is about the game and I feel that's reflected in the lack of respect show by the players to each other ... Oh yeah, the game ... the Bruins look like they're going to the playoffs and they're at home to the Habs ... I don't have a crystal ball but I suspect they'll try to give their fans what they want ... a win over the much-hated Habs with heads on spits ... hope I'm wrong but the Bruins have an image to uphold when playing against the Habs ... I'm hoping that works against them ... Cheers.

Price is to play? I imagined that with game every two nights for next two weeks that Tokarski would start this one.
For Rask, I guess after the playoff series and Boston being 0-3 against Montreal playoff and six points back in standings, then maybe Julien feels he has no choice.

What makes me most angry about the Cherry "savage/barbarian" comment is that he's now IN THE SPOTLIGHT again.
And he LOVES IT! He knows he won't get fired! All tongues are wagging….all websites are ranting!
Ratings will be up for next week to see if he apologizes…because just as he's done with every other idiotic remark he's made, he'll wait until Coach's Corner to respond.
Controversy MADE his career…along with kissing blue-and-white butt...and lies/revisionist history that's gone basically unchecked/unchallenged.
Why stop now? To hell with Euro players, Francophone Quebecers, women who talk during games, cultures/communities who rely upon seal…here's more crap in your face!

Where Habs didn't retaliate why would the B's wait until the playoffs? the Habs won't retaliate now, gives the B's a good chance to catch the Habs if Price is out, and they can just do it again later. oh MB, I know you have a plan, but doncha think protecting the most important guy on the team should be part of it?

They didn't wait for the playoffs to eliminate Pacioretty in 2011. Some might say it was strictly personal with Chara….but I think Max's presence very well could've made a difference when we met in the playoffs. He'd been a thorn in their side, IIRC. We took them to Game 7 OT as it was. AND we beat them last year in their barn. Lucic still hasn't made good on his handshake threats….will he do so tonight in some fashion? It's our 4th and final meeting of this regular season…..last chance to dance?

A complete beat-down from the Bruins wouldn't surprise me. Physically and on the scoreboard.
They're healthy, they've been hot, and they're at home.
Plus all the other factors mentioned above.
If it happens, then it's something Bergevin should see now rather than too late.

Couple of interesting comments by McLean during the pre-game spiel. First off, he cemented the fact that he's nothing but a toady for Cherry - said last night's Cherry rant against Newfs was all on him. Secondly, he mentioned that during last night's game Jagr skated up to Subban after he was high-sticked and bleeding and goaded him about it. When Subban hopped back on the ice for the PP he took a look at the Jersey bench and proceeded to lead the Habs to two quick PP goals.
