As per TSN TSNThe Montreal Canadiens have acquired right winger Devante Smith-Pelly from the Anaheim Ducks for left winger Jiri Sekac. SCOUTING REPORTAssets Skates very well, possesses some skill and is also a very good banger in open ice. Is very strong on his skates, thanks to his strong lower base. Can play either wing position. Is a capable checker. Flaws Still needs to work on his overall play without the puck, including positioning in all three zones. Could also stand to become a better passer to maximize his offensive potential at the NHL level. Career potential Physical complementary winger with upside.

Interesting move. Smith-Pelly doesn't appear to have the offensive upside of Sekac. Time will tell.

Didn't see this one coming. Sekac, we hardly knew you. Other than rarely scoring, I liked what I saw. Something about him that MB didn't like, lack of hockey sense maybe? Don't know much about Pelly. Plays a gritty game, doesn't he? Can always use more grit .

I can't believe they gave up on Sekac so quickly ... I personally feel he was never given a chance on the Habs. That is on Therrien

Not much PP time, I suppose…to see what he could do with more open ice….but he seemed to be a guy that skated around with the puck a lot, had some moves….but usually ran himself out of room…and he didn't play against the opposition's top checkers. The Ducks play a more offensive game, no? He should fit right in there. MB must've agreed with MT's assessment….who's to know? Smith-Pelly….6'0", 222. Another Weise warrior-type….it seems. Forechecking strength for the playoffs.

We got bigger, but likely gave up the most talent in this trade. One of few good puck possession forwards.
Thanks MT. Not sure why you were not an overly big fan of the kid, because he looked like he could be a good one.
I remember Smith-Pelly from the Juniors. He was dominant against kids at the tourney, but you never know how that translates into a long NHL season and playoffs. Definitely a guy more suited to a long playoff grind, but I thought we needed some scoring up front!!

Still only 22. It feels like a loss in that we give up a guy who was coveted by a number of NHL teams and didn't seem like he was going to be a flop like Brunner. Smith-Pelley will add a lot to physicality of our top 9. I agree that Sekac should have more offensive upside.

If I read his ESPN game log correctly he has had only 2 assists in the last 2 months & over 20 games without a goal. They had him averaging just under 14 minutes per game which seems fair for a rookie forward. Still, this caught me by surprise.

Some people on HF trying to extrapolate and think it's a precursor to another deal. They always do that. The logic, in this case, is not unfounded. Leafs have coveted DSP since his draft year. Perhaps he's a piece they wanted and they got Montreal to get him and it makes a deal between the Leafs and Habs go through. Friedman has said that Habs, Pens, and Bruins are pushing for Lupul ... which gives me the bad kind of shivers.

Perhaps the play of De La Rose really put Sekac into trade talks.
DLR seems to have pretty good vision for the game.

Sekac didn't much of chance here, all the hype about his conditioning and gym rat didn't mean much. Early on...but at this point give it thumbs down.

Lupul - ugh! 31 years old & on a 5.2 million cap hit until 2018 according to nhlnumbers.com. Injured all the time & was never that great a scorer. Why on earth would MTL want him. I like Smith-Pelly better anyway.

Seems like a kind of strange deal. Not sure I get the point of it, unless they think Smith-Pelly is a better fit in a third line, banging role. I will say this though, I never quite bought into the Sekac=Superstar hype. He has a lot of skills, no doubt, but he’s never actually produced anywhere. So maybe they thought the offense just wasn’t going to be there? Production and age wise both Sekac and Smith-Pelly are almost exactly the same. Total guess on the part of both GMs, as to what the other player will eventually be I guess.
Smith-Pelly seems to have done very well in the playoffs last year, with 5 goals in 12 games. A younger, more skilled Dale Weise as CH said? If we could get a player like Weise who could score 20 goals or so that would be pretty good, no?

I really would have liked to see how Sekac performed in the playoffs before letting go of him. He's got tons of intensity and fight in his game. I was really looking forward to seeing him, Eller and Prust in the playoffs.
I like DSP a lot, but I don't think we won this trade.

Does that mean he is playing poorly? They used him in defensive role, and thats what they got ... and they are doing the same with Eller. The Eller-Sekac combo (with Eller as center) was only a negative with Bourque on the line ... every other combo it was a positive.

50 games is too small a sample size for a player who's never played a North American schedule before. No, the USHL is not a North American schedule. This should have been a learning year for him. Get used to the game, the players, the grind of the schedule. Play within the coach's system, be responsible defensively, and the rest will come.
Last year, Jiri put up 28pts in 47 games in the KHL. He was second on his team in scoring. The league leader had 73 points. It's a generalization, but that sort of production in the KHL often translates into a strong top 6 player in the NHL. I think Jiri has 20g plus and 50 points in him. If he gets a chance to play on the LW with Perry and Getzlaf, I think he excels.

I think it's compounded for him because of the adjustment to the 82 game schedule. While the offense wasn't there, he was still playing a sound game defensively.

After Parenteau's injury, they put him back with Eller and the flavour of the week (Andrighetto, Prust, Thomas, De La Rose, Bournival) These last two games, they reunited him with Plekanec ... but really? Two games is the length of time you get to find the chemistry again? Some of our players were getting 20 games last year and this year ...

I was going to suggest much the same as blny until I saw he already did that. I also saw that Sekac's good atributes were not translating into points on the board. That makes him so much different than many of our other players. . I haven't seen any comments about Sekac's good defensive awareness and his anticipation and hockey IQ, all of which were pretty good, I thought. All along, in regard to many of our youngsters, I've been wondering how well they'd do with different mentorship, and I guess we may find out now. It will be interesting to follow Sekac and see if his production improves. I think it fair to wait until next year, though, as it does take time to get used to the smaller ice surface, DLR being the latest example. I liked DSP as a juniour and at the WJC, but he didn't seem to translate that into the same kind of success at the NHL level. It could be taking time, though. I would guess he's a faster skater than Sekac. Jiri had a lot of good attributes, but really lacked the coach's confidence. Not putting him out in the shootout had to bug Jiri to some point. Like I said, this may tell us more about Therrien and his ability to develop young players than anything else.
