Here's what Cherry said in Coach's Corner re: they're weren't laughing two years ago.
MACLEAN: Montreal does look good, yes....(and sounded dejected saying so.)
CHERRY: Yeah....do they ever. You know what bugs me, though? I gotta tell ya what bugs me...if I was the Toronto Maple Leafs. We showed about 15 guys laughing during the game (first period)....laughing, joking, playing the Leafs! I'll tell you one thing.....two years ago, they never laughed. You remember that?
MACLEAN: (nodding throughout) Yeah....well....(trying to move on)
CHERRY: You remember two years ago? Nobody laughed at the Leafs then!
======================================================================
A. Did the camera really pick up 15 Montreal players laughing...and could it be determined that they were laughing at the Leafs?
B. Nobody laughed at the Leafs two years ago...when they collapsed vs. Boston?

The camera did show a few players with smiles ... Pacioretty most notably. Was it 15? I would say it was more like three. Were they laughing at the Leafs? I'd say no, it was more like they were enjoying the atmopshere, winning, and putting up some stats against a heated rival that always seems to do something to piss us off.
I still am not sure what he meant by "nobody laughed two years ago".
Unless he is referring to the way we were manhandled in the playoffs against Ottawa and Toronto came within a hair of advancing. Or were we that terrible in the regular season against them? I don't recall that we were. We definitely won at least 2 games against them.

He's just setting the habs up to be criticized later on. They'll have had it coming for how they treated the poor leafs. Make the habs the bad guys so treating them like dirt is acceptable, more of the same. It's been modus operandi for this crew for awhile.

I think he was just referring that Toronto was a tougher team back then.... maybe they wouldn't win more games, but as a tougher team, you wouldn't want to give them an excuse for running you/hurting you back when Burke was in charge. I think it's just Cherry's ego taking a hit, seeing his beloved Leafs not only lose, but lose to adversaries who can smile during a game.

What Cherry doesn't get is that he, along with the rest of the HNIT crew, is largely responsible for the laughter. On a national broadcast for more than 33 years, the Leafs have been shoved down our throats at the expense of other Canadian franchises. Over-hype, cheerleading, main focus, apologetics, excuses….and it serves only to make Leaf failure more enjoyable for the rest of us. And all he's done here is add to the laugh track by using a 48-game season--the ONLY time they've made the playoffs in the past 11 years, ending in record-setting humiliation--to make a point. Cherry does the same with the Bruins. How about his "The league is picking on Lucic!" comment from a few weeks ago.

That's the thing, here, PTH ... it's his "beloved Leafs" only when his Bruins aren't in town ... I used to watch him, but I only watch reruns if I happen to read something interesting here ... I don't know if he'd done it recently, but I do remember him being decked out in his Bruins colours when Boston rolled into Toronto ... I don't know why, but a lot of Leaf fans don't seem to be too upset about it ... I saw the rerun and they were just weak comments aimed at coddling Leaf Nation ... edit: Oh yeah, it's always great beating the Leafs ... Cheers.

And of course the hockey Gods, who Don knows personally, will punish the Habs for this disrespect. Funny how these same Gods have had nothing but contempt for the leafs going on 50 years now. Wonder what Leafs did to deseve this purgatory. Hope the gods treat me with mercy, as I'm loving the Leafs ineptness and laughing loudly
