Well played game, could have went either way.
If PK falls like Forsberg did he's probably getting fined again.
Galch was much better.

Subban should have at least tried to catch him instead of tripping him right away. I'd take my chances of Forsberg vs. Price.
Probably tired out after all that useless dangling in the offensive zone.

I think a breakaway is probably a better option than penalty in ot. Any stats to back that? Skilly? Price probably has a 70% chance on making a save, 30%+ 4on3 pp? Max may have caught him too.
Looked to me that PK got hooked on the hands pretty good a few seconds before the giveaway. He's not going to get any calls.

It should be simple math of Carey's save percentage in shootouts vs their penalty kill % and whatever is higher.
PK 84.4% vs Breakaway shooters 81.3% vs Price so 3% better chance to kill a penalty, of course that doesn't count for pk's on 4 on 3's so I'd guess it's about equal or edge to allowing the breakaway to happen.

Fact is he afforded us a great opportunity to end it moments earlier. I thought we played well and it was a great game to watch. Can't single anyone out who played poorly. Preds fluke goal to tie it was just that! Pateryn continues to play steady and Petry is a revelation. We are much stronger with him back there. Too bad he's a FA.

One fact I read tonight was that Spelley is continuing to see a fair bit of ice time, and there was some thought as to how good that's making Dale Weise feel, who's get less ice time and producing more.
It's an interesting point. There's no doubt that Therrien is using Spelly a lot more than his production warrants. So the question is why. Let's assume he's got some reason for it. Any ideas why? Do he and Berg feel that Spelley's game translates much better in the playoffs, so they're trying to find some comfort zone of line combination for him? He's played mostly with Eller and DRL, no?
Not sure of the reasoning, but if it persists, one would think other players like Weise, Flynn, Mitchell, etc. would start to wonder. Not that they could do anything about it, of course.

I was almost happy when Nashville tied it up in the 3rd because I didn't want to watch us get outshot 20-5 hanging on for dear life. Galchenyuk was very active and visible but boy he needs to finish. I think he's really the key to everything for us. If he can start being the 30-goal, 60 points guy he's supposed to be then a lot of our problems would b solved. He had some great looks and with his skill he needs to bury them.

Add me to the chorus of those who thought it was a pretty good game. Could have gone either way. I, too, also thought that Subban should have;
a) Shot: 4 on 4, lots of room for big, juicy rebounds. b) Let Forsberg go: I think Pacioretty catches him on the other side, and even if he doesn't I take my chances with Price stopping somebody on a partial breakaway, with a winger hounding the shooter on the right, and a defenseman breathing down his neck from behind.
Oh well. Hindsight and all that. Subban made an instinctive decision, and it cost him. I'd still keep him on the team.
I'm not sure Galchenyuk is the key to everything, but man it would really nice if he starts producing. He's played a few games with Plekanec now, and the offense has been slow to come. Sure would be nice for them to click.
With regards to Weise, he and Smith-Pelley actually switched lines for a bit, with Weise playing on the third for a spell. He was terrible, in my opinion. Actually, I thought he had a rather poor game overall. Happens, not giving up on him or anything, but he made a few pretty bad turnovers I thought, so he certainly didn't "earn" his way back. Not that Smith-Pelley was lights out either, but you get the point. Anyways, I hope it's not an issue, as I think that would say more about Weise than Therrien, but we shall see. As long as Therrien makes everybody feel like they are involved, regardless of time on ice, then it shouldn't be a problem. Really, the only thing that matters now is the playoffs, in my opinion.
Anybody else notice that Torrey Mitchell was 13 for 19 (68%) on faceoffs last night?

Dear Mr. Easton,
I watch my beloved Montreal Canadiens religiously, I rarely miss a game. I am a member of an internet board where all we do is talk about Habs, Habs, Habs. 24-7, it's true. Google HabRus, you'll see. I'm still a young kid, trapped inside a rather rotund adult body, but I still take my Easton stick outside and rush down the wing, wearing my cherished bleu-blanc-et-rouge, and I shoot that puck with all I have, and fall flat on my face ... but I get up and yell "Subban scores, et la but!!!" I fall down because I really shouldn't be pretending to be Subban taking slapshots, you find out real quick that you should know how to skate alot better than me to do that ... but by golly, I can pick the top shelf with my wrist shot with the best of them. How come my stick can do that Mr. Easton? I mean, I'm led to believe Easton sticks aren't designed for wrist shots. They break at the slightest of touches, passes, wrist shots, but they seem pretty darn capable of taking slap shots time and time again. Why is that Mr. Easton? Did you sell Subban defective sticks?? Shame on you Mr. Easton! There hasn't been this kind of travesty since the day that boy's mom bought him a Leafs sweater from Mr. Eaton ... ohhhh wait a minute ... Easton, Eaton ....SHAME ON YOU!! You have blue and white jammies, don't you Mr. Easton??!!
Please find it in your heart to fix Subban's sticks. I have wrote him telling him I will give him mine ... I know they can take wrist shots, but he is just not answering me. I really should have been nicer in my posts on HabsRus, but this wristshot-gate is getting too serious now. We have playoff games to win and with your team now eliminated, I hope you find it in your heart to send him a batch of those wrist shot sticks. Do you need the serial number Mr. Easton?

Sure would be nice for them to click. What I mean by that BC is that his upside is really the only untapped potential on the team. That and improving the power play. The Habs are on pace for about 210 goals this year, which is 30 goals shy of my "holy grail" of 240. Where are those 30 goals? We've said before that it's hard to expect a whole lot more out of guys like Pacioretty, DD, Pleks, Gallagher, Subban, and Markov. If our PP was clicking at around the league average we would net an extra 8-10 goals over the course of the season. So that leaves about 20 even strength goals. And that's where Galchenyuk comes in. He's the only forward we have who has elite talent but hasn't put up the numbers yet. And it's getting to be about time for him to go from being a 20-goal guy to a 30-35 goal guy. If he has it in him, which I really hope he does. Short of that we're relying on guys like Eller and de la Rose, who you pointed out have never been scorers at any level. I like where we are right now but we all feel that offense is the Achilles heel of this team, especially if Price isn't playing lights out. I can see us going on a deep run this year and in the future if Galchenyuk starts to live up to his promise.

Isn't our bottom 6 short on projected goals? Can't add them up now, (breadfast calling), but I bet that bottom 6 is woefully short on the 5 to 15 goals we expected from each guy in there.

Nashville pretty tough at home, losing to them in overtime nothing to worry about. Hoping Rangers finish ahead of us anyway...don't want nothing to do with Ottawa in playoffs. Wasn't going to watch this game as Habs play a boring style, but maybe download and watch tonight where many say it is good game.

38 games in which we've scored 2 or fewer goals. 14-19-5. Just over half our season has been scoring-challenged, and it's further testament to our goaltending that we're almost at .500 in those games.
If our PP continues its lacklustre pace (IF we get our fair share of PPOs), I envision series going 6 or 7 with Price having to be Superman.
If he's merely human, we'll be out in Round 1. Something continues to be missing up front...and it's overall strength down the middle.

Is teams will run him in playoffs, they have been able to knock Price out of action last 2 playoff years. Then team is headed down the drain.

Very true, Gnick. The next guy that tries that with Price needs to be Ferguson'd into the next dimension to get the message across.
Also I want nothing to do with winning the useless President's Trophy. That's like winning Miss Congeniality. It leaves a sense of accomplishment when nothing has been accomplished. I want us to be truly hungry for the Cup, not just peckish.

I think we're more than just one-dimensional. Our D is deeper than it's been in some time. And our bottom 6 depth is fine, too. Can't complain about our penalty kill. Our centres are seemingly cast in stone, so it's all on our PP becoming a threat once again, IMO.

I should have expanded on my bottom 6 comments, but I was hungry. The bottom 6 we had for most of the year did not contribute enough offensively. I'd say our bottom 6 since the trade deadline is a bit stronger in that regard. Eller has found some scoring touch and DLR is chipping in now and then. Prust is at least getting assists and we know Weise can score often enough. Mitchell is capable as well. Spelley hasn't shown much yet, but we can remain hopeful. Course, I thought our bottom 6 with Bournival and Sekac would prove capable as well, and that wasn't so, though Bournival has been plagued by injuries. There is depth behind the regular bottom 6, though. I wouldn't want to have to replace Prust, but most of the rest have capable players in the wings awaiting their chance.

Though I suppose you could twist yourself into knots trying to figure out if Galchenyuk becoming a 30 goal scorer and the power-play getting better are somehow related. But you're right though, not a heck of a lot of room for improvement otherwise. Maybe Smith-Pelly becomes a 15 goal scorer? That would add a few more. And I suppose Parenteau is a blackhole production-wise too. A real trick would be somehow dumping Parenteau and picking up an about-to-break-through player who hasn't yet gotten the big salary. Is Yakupov that guy? Someone else? Heck, I'm sure we'd all just settle for Parenteau himself chipping in 15. I think we're more than just one-dimensional. Our D is deeper than it's been in some time. And our bottom 6 depth is fine, too. Can't complain about our penalty kill. Our centres are seemingly cast in stone, so it's all on our PP becoming a threat once again, IMO. I might be the minority on this, but I think the power-play is due to breakout, and in a big way. If you break the numbers down even further you see that our home powerplay is 12th in the league. It's on the road where we suck big-time; 29th. Home is nearly twice as good as away (20.6% versus a paltry 10.9%). I have no idea why that is so, but if that gap were narrowed our goals for would look a lot more respectable. Only Toronto and bizarrely Tampa have as big a discrepancy between home and away success rates. An overall 20.6% average would put us 7th in the league and would translate into about 10 more goals. 10 more goals would give us 199 on the season, good for 15th overall in the league (and tied with Pittsburgh). So yeah, if you really want to break it down it seems like fixing the road power-play is the key. Is it just a statistical anomaly? If so, once that breaks we should be good.

My pet trade idea at the draft is Eller and Tinordi to Edmonton for Yakupov. It's possible Yakupov is a bust, but assuming he isn't then you have to believe that Edmonton would be open to flipping Yakupov for a two-way player like Eller under a reasonable contract and a legit rotation dman in Tinordi. We have our own internal replacement for Eller in de la Rose, I still like Tinordi but I don't think management does, and we could add another top 6 forward on the cheap? Pacioretty/DD/Gallagher Galchenyuk/Pleks/Yakupov Parenteau/DLR/DSP Prust/Malhotra/Weise/Bournival, etc. Markov/Subban Beaulieu/Petry (?) Emelin/Gilbert/Pateryn

The thing about Yak is that he's cheap. He's also playing in a terrible environment. I'd give him a chance for sure. Heck, he and Galchenyuk would certainly be motivated and I think Pleks would be able to keep up.

Maybe Smith-Pelly becomes a 15 goal scorer? The Smith-Pelly for Sekac is not working out for me. We traded a possible 30 goal scorer for a journeyman. Unless there was more then meets the eye, this one for one trade looks not too promising. So far, I have only seen three games, but I have not seen much "toughness" from SP. And 1 assist? ONE?

Based on Sekac's history, I wouldn't expect 30 goals from him. What I would expect are numbers such as 10-20 or 10-25. Way more assists than goals. Still a decent 3rd liner who could move to the 2nd line in a pinch. And he's responsible defensively. He didn't play much last night, but finished at even, when a lot of others were minus on the night. Small sample, yes. He's been 1 goal, 4 assists and plus 3 in his 13 games with the Ducks.

I do believe that the D core hasn't been this solid since the days of Desjardins, Schneider, Odelein etc... My head was spinning on all those odds anyway. Yeah, players don't really think in that instance, though they should. Not as far as calculating odds or working out statistical probabilities on the go, but you have to know that a 4 on 3 PP is deadly, so taking a penalty in OT should be preventing an open net shot and not much less than that. I think most players go into OT knowing that a PP is gold and a PK is potential death, so you wouldn't have to think too much. I suspect PK was just ticked off at himself for getting into that position, and reacted. That's what the coaches should work on and perhaps they are...controlling emotions because they'll bite you in the butt at the worst time. This was just a regular season game loss of a point, but it should be good evidence for coaching him in prep for the playoffs. Which brings me to another thought. I wonder what the success rate for 5 on 3 PP's is compared to 4 on 3's. First impressions are that 5 on 3's should be more successful, but I'm not sure. Four on 3 makes for fewer decisions on the part of the attackers, resulting in less confusion and accordingly, faster puck movement. That would cause great consternation for the penalty killers. What am I getting at? I'm wondering, if, a team gets a 5 on 3 opportunity, if they should only ice 4 guys instead of 5. There's nothing in the rules stopping them from playing a man short. Or you simply place the 5th guy around the red line once you've established zone entry to save time retrieving the puck. Maybe I'm crazy, but if I was a GM, I'd check out the numbers.

Tinordi is far from being a legit rotation D-man, and Eller is right now an overpaid 3d liner, so I think to even get a conversation going our 1st round pick would have to be in play. As well, Yak's improved since their coaching change. I think Yak might have been picked too high, but might still be a solid, Zednik-type scoring winger.
