I'd have to go looking into when players can be traded again, but I do question the source. That they're citing he went to the club asking to be traded, and they didn't oblige him is likely the biggest red flag. One, I doubt he would have. Two, had he the club wouldn't have kept him around. His value is enough that they could have gotten something of need for him.
EDIT: you can trade at any time, but the deadline is for playoff eligibility. Not a factor at this point, so if the Habs did find someone interested in Plekanec, that deal could be made.

I guess it depends when the request was made,if it indeed true?....it definitely would be out of sorts to make a deal or at least announce it at this time. If there is any credence to the report we'll see just prior or at the draft. TP IMO is 3rd line guy on the perfect team a second at best on a team with a real number one center.....to much asked for him here IMO and it seems to take a toll come playoff time.
Habs have improved but not to the point where they have taken the burden off guys who aren't meant to be leaned on the way they are here.

He should be able to get good secondary scoring in return. IMO, Eller and Mitchell can do the PK duty Pleks provided.

Whether it's Staal, Malkin, or someone not yet mentioned; bring in a guy capable of doing the job and teaching Galchenyuk. By no means is it an easy move to make. Lots of pieces in the air. It's the direction I'd move in though.

I think Plek might get moved while Mitchell gets signed.... a bit like we did re-signing Weaver and then moving Gorges: the new, cheaper guy gets signed and we move the guy who's role he can fill (to a certain extent) and we get assets back.
In this case, I'd expect Eller and Galchenyuk to be the contenders for the center slot, with Mitchell being there to fill in on the 3d line if Eller were to win the 2nd line C slot.
I wouldn't expect much for Plekanec though, guys of his age and type don't seem to fetch nearly as much as they should.

Maybe it takes Tomas plus, or you do a deal not unlike Briere for PAP (not that it worked out in that case). Maybe Berg stays the course and lets Plekanec's contract run out. There are some rather appealing options in the 2016 UFA pool. That's a big gamble though. You're betting on them NOT signing long term with current team AND willing to sign with you.

As to Plek, we'd get something useful for him, but he's not a guy who gets packaged for Eric Staal. He's more a guy who gets you a 2nd round pick and a Dale Weise.

Maybe there's a fit with the Coyotes. He replaces Vermette, for Hanzal perhaps?`

This is still just a rumour.
Some kind of prank....or a "plant" disguised as a rumour by someone in Pleks' camp?
If it's true that he requested a trade last year, perhaps his camp is trying to really get the ball rolling.

I've seen the subject line to this thread on Facebook and Twitter ... it's all over the place and I really dislike the commotion it's caused ... no one puts their name to the column, so I'm kind of leery about that ... edit: They did leave a reference ... I've been visiting DanslesCoulisses off and on for a few years now ... they're not off too often and if they are they aren't off by much ... Cheers.

I don't know if it's true or not, but given his age, status on the team, contract and so on, it would not surprise me in the least if he is dealt.
What does Plekanec and Tinordi get you? For that matter, do you think we could get Plekanec for Patrick Sharp straight up? Or is that too much of a gamble for us?

The salaries are a wash and Chicago needs to drop salary next year, so they will be looking for prospects (defenseman) and picks instead.

The great unloved Tomas Plekanec.
It would be strange for Berg to throw cold water on moving Galchenyuk to centre and then turn around and trade the best all-around center we have. Makes zero sense unless this is part of a mega-deal.
Pleks was lousy in the playoffs along with the rest of the team, but in a league where production is hard to come by Tomas has been rock steady. Goals scored over the past 9 seasons: 20, 29, 20, 25, 22, 17. 14 (partial season), 20, 26. And he's durable. To me one of the most underappreciated stats in sports is "games played", and Pleks has averaged 80 games since he got here. He plays a 200-foot game, he's good on draws, and can produce just about anywhere you put him, as opposed "Goldilocks" players like DD and Eller where everything needs to be "just right" for them to do anything, and even that's usually not enough.
I would trade him in the right deal, but it would have to be a sweet deal. The Habs are starved for offense and Berg doesn't seem in any hurry to fix the problem. Dealing away one of our most productive players isn't the answer.

My guess is that this was born out of a misunderstanding. Doesn't Plekanec spend his summers back in Kladno? Maybe that's what he was referring to when he said he won't be in Montreal for much longer. Players in a market like this generally know better than to reveal upcoming contract/trade info to strangers. And I very highly doubt that Plekanec mentioned to this company that he had requested a trade last year. So where did that trade leak come from? That same source? Only 1 source is mentioned in the article...
Seems like there's 3 separate bits if info here:
1 - Pleks won't be in Montreal much longer 2 - Pleks asked for a trade last year 3 - Pleks has been traded
All these leaks came from one unnamed source. So this source needs to have an link to that mysterious company and probably Habs management too. I can be pretty naive sometimes, but this one pushes my limits.
Next time, they should just wait until the middle of the summer to throw around these rumors... it would at least give us something to talk about during the uneventful offseason.

For that matter, do you think we could get Plekanec for Patrick Sharp straight up? Or is that too much of a gamble for us? I can only go on a feeling right now, but I wouldn't take the chance on Patrick Sharp ... if he got to Montreal he'd be playing a defensive system and, more importantly, he wouldn't have the same supporting cast in Montreal ... Eric Staal's name has come up here and there, and I'd kick some tires on that front ... again, only a feeling, but I suspect finding linemates for Staal might be a tad easier that it would be for Sharp ... the significant factor in getting him to Montreal would be cap space ... does that mean Jeff Petry and/or Torrey Mitchell are gone ... I'm just glad I'm not in Marc Bergevin's shoes ... can be a pretty thankless job at times ... Cheers.

Not surprised by the rumour. He's a good player with a year to go on his deal. Unless it's for personal reasons, I can't see how it makes all that much sense for Bergevin. Not when you are trying to build a contender within the next two or three years. If another team tried to acquire a solid veteran like Plekanec, it would be just for that reason. He's the best overall centre on the team right now. His versatility makes him a key member of both offensive and defensive roles. The Habs would never get equivalent value in return.
If they need to make salary room for Petry, there are plenty of other candidates that can be used instead whose loss would not impact the team as much.

Timing is definitely odd. I sure would not give up Pleks without a decent return. He is a bit of a fly-under-the-radar guy though and does not show up in playoffs (at least on the scoresheet, as he was great on faceoffs and defensive shifts this year), so an opposing GM would likely try to lowball the Berg.
Maybe MT and DD have hacked somebody's computer.

He is a bit of a fly-under-the-radar guy though and does not show up in playoffs I think Pleks gets a bad rap even in the playoffs. He was lousy this year but the whole team was lousy. Here is Pleks' career PPG average in the regular season and playoffs: REG: 0.66 POST: 0.57 DIFF: (14%) So Pleks' production in the playoffs is typically 14% lower than the regular season. But most players production goes down in the playoffs, so one would need to compare Pleks' dropoff with the average dropoff for comparable players. Just to throw out some names: Sidney Crosby's playoff PPG is 13% lower than in the regular season, Alex Ovechkin is down 18%, Pavel Datsyuk is off 24%. Those aren't comparable players but I think it shows that lower post-season production is normal, alomost expected. The problem, I think, is that the Habs have struggled to score goals for years so when you lose production in the playoffs, even a small amount really hurts. We just have less margin for error than teams with more firepower. So Pleks gets a lot of heat for being a weak playoff but in reality he's doing about what's expected, it's just that there aren't enough players to pick up the slack. Still, 1 goal and 4 points in 12 games was awful by any standards. We certainly needed more that that this year.

There's always context: what line was he on, who was he playing with, what was his role?
But, when he's not scoring or killing penalties he just doesn't do enough. He doesn't lean on the opposition. He doesn't make life difficult enough. DD takes the body more, or at least tries to. Plekanec bails on hits routinely.
People say, "you should be trading DD, etc." Well, some of the reasoning behind a Pleks move is that despite his faults he still marketable. Conversely, I don't think there's much value if any for DD. Plekanec is every bit as good as Vermette, if not better (imo). If he hit the market, there would be offers. Draft week could be used, like the deadline, to maximize return.

That twitter account is also suggesting it is like the Halak deal, where it was completed before the playoffs but not announced until afterwards. twitter.com/DLCoulissesIf this thing has any legs, we best be getting a bona fide scorer out of the deal.

FWIW, Stubbs follows him/her/them. That further legitimizes them as something of a source.
Could it be the team he's going to is still in the playoffs? Perhaps the leak comes from Montreal, but there's a 'gag order' because the receiving team is in the playoffs?
