Not bad...was hoping more in the 4.5 - 5.0 per year, but at least we don't lose our 2nd and 4th round pick for nothing.

I think with the dearth of good quality UFA d-men available, Petry could have gotten $6MM plus somewhere else. That's not even taking into account Quebec's tax structure. I think Jeff, and his family, must really have enjoyed the life style in Montreal. And he must be ok with Therrien as well. Seriously. It matters to players.

We continue to get defense , every year it's the same ... I'm probably the only one on here that didn't care if we did not sign Petry. I would have been content with Markov, Subban, Beaulieu, Pateryn, Emelin, Gilbert and Tinordi.
This signing doesn't make us any better than we were before, doesn't increase our goals, and I've always wondered why Edmonton let him go. Hoping we don't find out next year, now he has his term and loot.
I won't be singing MB's praise until he adds goals .... The record keeps on skipping

I just saw it on Twitter, then got myself a scotch ... Marc Bergevin made it his priority and he didn't dick around here ... trying to figure out how this affects the rest of the team ... Tomas Plekanec has of cap hit of $5 million ... you know, if he's looking to get most of that money back for Jeff Petry ... big-time congrats to Petry ... welcome aboard ...
Cheers.

We now have 4 players who count more than 5 million on the cap, not one is a forward.
We have 5 defenseman under contract, counting over 27 million on the cap. FIVE!
We have 10 forwards signed that only count 29 million.

I thought Gilbert really picked up his play once Petry came on board and also had a strong playoffs, so maybe a team is willing to trade for him now? Pateryn seems more than ready to replace Gilert.
I really like having Petry on board now. We were getting kinda slow back on D, but Petry and Beaulieu bring excellent mobility. They could make a great duo next year.
I hope we can shed some more salary, though.

The record keeps on skipping I'm happy, nay, thrilled with it Skilly, because I consider Petry to be a player who isn't that far below PK in all around ability and with Markov on his last legs, he replaces Andrei and keeps our defense corps at a much better than average level. It also gives us, using your names above, 8 NHL capable defensemen (giving Tinordi the benefit of the doubt). It provides Bergevin with the option of moving one of them for help up front. If we're able to move Emelin and Pleks, for example, as a package, could we not pick up a decent top 6 forward? Throw in a prospect and/or pick and that player gets even better. Yeah, I know, show me. Well, we're heading into that point of the year where trades do happen. Teams know what they need and are in a position to make changes. Berg's never going to have a better chance to make a deal than at the draft this year. Getting Petry into the fold for another 6 years gives him the flexibility to move at least one defenseman. Two might be tough, but Dietz is coming along and can be added to our depth group. Now, if he isn't able to swing a deal to make us better up front at the draft, then I'll be disappointed. But not now. He's set up the pins for a strike. PS. Edmonton didn't 'let him go'. It was obvious he wasn't going to re-sign with Edmonton (location), so they got what they thought they could get for him. This is definitely one of Berg's better trades. A second and 7th rounder for Petry. Whew.

Excited to see what he can do for a full season. $5.5million is about right compared to what Engelland, Orpik and Niskanen got last year.... We seem to have a lot of money tied up on defence.. No big FA signings this year I guess as we got not a lot of space to play with... Expect Bergeron to be trading alittle??

I love it. Call it the "Montreal tax" if you want, cause I was hoping for $5 million. I readily agree though that his play for us, combined with the UFA market, meant that he could have easily bid a team up to $6 million. Maybe more. Jeff solidifies our top 4 significantly. Could we have gone with Beaulieu or Gilbert? Maybe, although Nathan isn't a right hand shot and playing him with Emelin might have been an adventure. Jeff fits within the age group of the core, and when Markov retires, Beaulieu can slide into that lhd slot. I come back to Emelin, and how much better he played with Petry. Jeff simply makes him better.
I could see moving Gilbert. One year left, at a reasonable price. Play the kids in the third pair. FWIW, the Rangers have nearly $26 million committed to their blue line. If they had taken all of Yandle, they'd have more than us committed.
No, it doesn't address goal scoring. We'll have to see what Berg can accomplish on that front. It will have to be via trade.
EDIT: Lebrun reporting there's NTC in deal, but nothing further.

A guy like Yakupov would be a substantial risk, but I could see Edmonton being able to use Pleks and Emelin while their young stars develop maturity. After the WC. Eberle isn't going anywhere. I still believe the easiest way to improve our scoring is to improve our zone clearance system. Come out of our zone, with possession, with speed and we'll score 20 more goals a year.

Cause we don't play a style to benefit from it. While I agree the alley oop has to be cut way down and our breakout has to improve, I think the way to do so is with better forwards. It is our forwards that can't get it out at the blueline most of the time, not our defense.

Yes Berg needs to find a way to add goals to the lineup, but a guy like Petry is a huge piece of the puzzle. Maybe it DOES mean Emelin gets moved. If you look at Petry's deal, the overall salaries of the second pair guys in NYC, and the UFA signings of others, perhaps you can sell Emelin as a comparative bargain. It's all guess work.

It is our forwards that can't get it out at the blueline most of the time, not our defense. Can't argue with that sentiment (the putting the puck in the net part) Yeah, the forwards had a lot of trouble getting it out, because the opposing dmen would pinch in, overmatch us and the other guys would get the puck. One solution is to get a whack of bigger forwards, like the Kings, and the second is to try coming up the middle occasionally, so the dman pinching along the boards is suddenly out of position. He soon learns he can't cheat so then we have an easier time coming up the boards, too. It's a cheaper way to increase scoring. We can also do something about the PP. I was looking at Guy Boucher's line-up in Tampa the year they were so bad and what did I see? Guess where Dan Lacroix was that year? He wasn't there the following year, though, after Cooper took over. Hmmmmmm...that's odd.

Subban, Petry, Price, Gallagher, Pacioretty are now clearly our core; Markov and Plekanec are the oldies slowly fading away. Galchenyuk, Beaulieu and prospects are "to be determined".
I like this deal; it mostly means Subban won't be alone when Markov fades, which I think has already started.
Signing a 27 year old to a 6 year deal isn't overly scary. I just hope they scouted him enough to know that he'll be an asset regardless of other assets...
Still, to me this means that they aren't thinking Beaulieu, Dietz or whoever else on D will be a top-4 anytime soon.

Emelin is looking more like an overpaid 3rd pair D. At this point, Beaulieu is clearly the 2nd left dman behind Markov and should be getting at least as much even strength ice time as Markov. I was a big fan of Emelin a few years ago, before the injury, but I continue to believe that Tinordi has more upside and he's way cheaper. If nothing else Berg should be looking to get the most value out of his payroll and Tinordi is a FAR better value than Emelin at this point.

I don't know PTH, I think Beaulieu could be top 4, if not now, then by the end of the year. He needs to be given more responsibility and more ice time. There was a point where Beaulieu was forced into more responsible situations (was that when Emelin got hurt?) and I thought he responded extremely well. He was very confident at that time, and then as others came back and MT moved him down the depth chart, he lost a bit of that aggressiveness and confidence. I think he's got it in spades and he's not a defenseman I would consider moving. Dietz needs some exposure to the NHL, but he's a right hand shot, and guess how many guys are ahead of him there? Now if he starts the year in St. John's playing top end defense, that gives Berg the chance to move someone (Gilbert?, Pateryn?). More asset management options, which is a good thing. Dietz will be 22 in July, so he's hardly past his development stage. I have some hopes for him.

Then again, what do I know: in 2 years Markov is gone, so all this says is that no one will be ready to take over from Markov before Petry slots into that #2 spot in 2 years.

The Berg has always stuck with his guns regarding liking defensive depth. I really think this move replaces Markov sooner rather than later(not advocating dumping him, but he can now fade to a lesser role in style). Beau slots up too, and gets more prime time ice time. Tinordi and Pateryn have to battle to show they belong, and when they do, then Gilbert and Emelin look much more moveable. The weird thing is both Gilbert and Emelin looked better with Petry around. Last guy to do that was Markov.
The puck will move out of our zone better and spend less time moving out, but we still need another shooter to put it in the net. No immediate help in the AHL from what I can see. Chucky needs to up his offensive game and PAP needs to score before the shootout.
I am hoping the Berg has a well used phone.

I thought Beaulieu had solidified himself in the lineup...then Karlsson took him out.
Certainly has solid value in a package deal, should Berg decide to make a deal for more scoring.
The Petry signing makes it a bit more tolerable....but I'd hate it if NB turns out to be McDonagh-ish.
