As you may be aware, Galchy has fired his agent, Ian Pulver, who is a partner with Igor Larionov in the agent business. Larionov states that the 'going separate ways', is a result of Galchy and his family not being willing to follow Larionov's advice. “Ian and I were trying to help him to become a good hockey player but, more importantly, to be a good human being,” Larionov said. “I would speak to him every day; I think I spent more time talking to him than talking to my wife.”
Galchenyuk expressed unhappiness over his ice time with the Canadiens and being benched by coach Michel Therrien in some situations.
“I tried to make him understand that he has to be patient,” Larionov said. “I had to wait when I was a young player; every great player has a time when he’s going to be on the bench, but you have to learn that’s part of the game.”
Galchenyuk is one of the few unsigned players on the Canadiens roster and negotiations with the 21-year-old are on hold until he finds a new agent.
“I hope things work out because the Canadiens are a great organization and all the Russian players who go there really enjoy playing there,” Larionov said.www.hockeyinsideout.com/news/agent-larionov-says-galchenyuk-and-family-wouldnt-accept-his-adviceI wonder how much of this traces its roots back to January when Galchy was 'requested' to move back to wing from centre. That reduced his ice time as he had been on the first line. I don't recall a lot of benchings, but I can't agree with the amount of ice time Galchy was being given. I too, thought we should play him a lot more, put up with some growing pains and reap the benefits of a sped up development process next year when we would be more ready to compete for the Cup. I'm curious about Larionov's comments regarding his own development. Would that have been with Tarasov as coach? Mr. Gulag? Yes, there's a process to learning how to do your NHL job, but I think we've been too slow on the Galchenyuk development track. His family obviously thinks so. I saw another tweet that suggested Pat Brisson was Galchy's new agent. Is he one of the aggressive ones? Is that going to be a headache for Bergevin?

It is hard to interpret.
Galchenyuk, if he wants to play centre, is right to be disappointed by the club (Therrien to be more precise). If he is, in reality, indifferent to where he plays, then it seems like a poorly conceived power play to create an issue that needs to be resolved in his favor before the situation is negative.

if Larionov is to be believed, and Galchenyuk is unhappy with ice-time, then why fire your agent over something he has no control over?
There is no way this is over ice-time numbers. Yes, we'd all like to see Galchenyuk on the ice more. But he had just as much ice-time as the #1 centre in the team. He was 5 in ice-time for forwards (in both the playoffs and regular season) with 16:00 mins a game. The only forwards with significantly more ice time were Plekanec and Pacioretty.
I think it's safe to assume that Galchenyuk was in fact not happy with being put back on the wing. He played the good soldier and saw the results down the stretch and into the playoffs ... And feels he can do better. I'd also say that he wants significantly more PP time.
I'm not surprised at this, that whole scenario of moving a productive centre to the wing made no sense to me ... Every stat, metric , even my own eyes, showed that Galchenyuk was in NO way playing poorly offensively or defensively at centre. he might be comfortable on the wing, but he is BETTER at centre.

It will be interesting to see how Marc Bergevin handles this one ... a player goes public expressing his unhappiness with his coach usually doesn't go over well ... hopefully they sort this out before it becomes a drama under Bergevin's watch ... Cheers.

Bingo! As many of us conspiracy theorists speculated at the time, Chucky was playing the good soldier as he bit his tongue. Based on that article (Chucky speaking to Larionov every day and Larionov's preaching patience) there can be no doubt Larionov told him to bite his tongue and not complain about MT. So he did. And now, Chucky, like many of us, suspects that had he been permitted to continue to play at centre he would have flourished as he did during that brief period. While he bit his tongue then, he now realizes it likely cost him $$$ in these negotiations as his stats aren't what they could have been. So if I'm Chuck, I'm not only pissed at MT but really pissed at my agent who gave me bad advice and it is costing me $$$. Guess what? I fire my agent! Wow, do I wish someone could/would fire MT!

Total lack of professionalism on the part of Larionov and his agency.

I don't think there's any doubt he feels he's worth the contract that Gallagher got.

I think the contract that Gallagher got (6 years @ 3.5 per I believe) would be fair for Alex and would be happy to do.

3.75, TD (but why quibble ) 22.5 over 6. interesting scale, though: $5.5M in 2015-16, $4.5M in 2016-17, $2.75M in 2017-18, $3M in 2018-19, $4M in 2019-20 and $2.75M in 2020-21 nhl.com

I still think Galchy did agree to going back to wing - the alternative being to go to the 3d line. Overall though, all this is hard to interpret. I wonder if Galchy just got to thinking that his agent should be on his side, and when his agent appeared to be giving him the same viewpoint as Habs management, that just got to be too much. If Galchy wants to be paid based on what he expects he could accomplish, and both his agent and the Habs are looking for a Yakupov-type, bridge deal, while Galchy thought Johanssen in Columbus was a solid comparable, I can see that he'd be very frustrated. Given how the Habs made Subban fit into the "bridge contract" mold, I don't see Bergevin folding, unless Galch is willing to accept something for some of his UFA years (like Gallagher did).

I'd definitely offer him the same deal as Gallagher if that what he wants. I expect that in 3 years it would be as much of a steal as Pacioretty's deal.

Bergevin criticized Galchenyuk at the end of the season and said he *might* never be a center...
As much as we want to fault Therrien, it is obvious to me that Bergevin and Therrien see eye to eye when it comes to Galchenyuk... they want to see something from him that they're not seeing right now. Whatever it is.

Hope this blows over fast. Don't want to be alienating a young star this early in his career.
A Gally-like deal would be fine. It would be a bargain for the team in the later years, but more than they could likely get on a shorter bridge deal now. Does the Berg take his chance on another bridge deal like Subban, which looked like a very team friendly deal until the Norris and the crazy contract that was necessary thereafter?
Either way, get this done asap Berg (assuming Chucky gets a replacement agent in place right away, but it is in his interest to do so).

Rumours are that Galchenyuk has now hired Pat Brisson as his agent.
I don't know what to make of any of this. Larionov could simply be talking smack because he's upset at losing a potentially lucrative player, or there may be some truth to what he is saying about Galchenyuk being a problem-child. I just find it hard to believe that Larionov would suggest that Galchenyuk accept anything that wasn't fair (assuming Bergevin is low-balling him), and I find it just as hard to believe that Larionov told Galchenyuk to hold out for the moon. This should be a pretty simple negotiation, really, so I don't know what the issues would be.
Agents do a lot more than just negotiate contracts, so perhaps Galchenyuk doesn't feel he is getting enough out of his people in other areas. That would explain hiring a Super-Agent like Brisson, who has all the Big Names and Contacts. In the NHL Agent world you don't get much bigger than Brisson, so perhaps it's as simple as that; Galchenyuk feels he has out-grown Larionov and Pulver, and the latter two are bitter about it.

The soap opera according to Igor Larionov ... allhabs.net- Larionov told Pat Hickey that the parting of ways came after (Alex) Galchenyuk and his family were unwilling to accept his advice, saying, “Ian and I were trying to help him to become a good hockey player but, more importantly, to be a good human being. I would speak to him every day; I think I spent more time talking to him than talking to my wife.”
- Larionov went on to say that Galchenyuk expressed his unhappiness with his icetime and being benched by Michel Therrien.
Cheers.

Cheers. Doesn't take much more than that to create a "big" story in Montreal As BC suggest there's probably a bit of sour grapes from Larionov in his comment. But at the same time there is probably "something" behind this... Maybe Galchenyuk would have liked for Larionov/Pulver to talk to the organisation about his usage and was instructed that he shouldn't take this route...

If Larinov actually said the things he's reported to have said then he is shockingly unprofessional. One would have thought that all discussions with one's client are confidential unless waived by the client. If Chucky had publicly criticized his agent then i can understand Larinov trying to defend himself but simply because Chucky chooses a new agent is no reason to start disclosing confidential aspects of their client/agent relationship. Really quite unbelievable, particularly when Chucky is in the middle of critical negotiations.. If i had Larinov as my agent i would be moving on. This guy is pathetic.

This business with Larionov seems out of character for him. He's always been very professional. If they did indeed go their separate ways because the Galchenyuk's wouldn't take their advice, that sounds more like Larionov and Pulver firing the Galchenyuk's rather than the reverse. You give advice and the client can take it or leave it. If they leave it, then you do your best to comply with the client's wishes. It simply doesn't make sense. I'm pretty sure I read a quote where Pulver was adamant that they weren't 'fired'. The part Larionov shouldn't have done is pass on the information that Alex wasn't happy with his ice time or 'benchings'. That information falls into privacy areas and should have been kept confidential. That benching part is weird because I don't recall any specific benchings. Alex seemed to get his normal amount of time (which was too low IMO), but I don't think his ice time was reduced or at least noticeably reduced. I could be wrong there. He certainly should have been out on the power play instead of DD.

Would only add that saying he needed to talk to Chuck everyday makes it sound like Chuck is high maintenance if not a baby. Sounds like an acrimonious divorce. i'm starting to think this is media hype if not fabrication. Just don't see why Larionov sees any advantage in dissing a former client who has not criticized him. Even if Chuck is the mess Larionov claims, as a player would you hire Larionv knowing that he is likely to go public with your laundry and frailties if things don't work out?

I wonder if there isn't some cultural aspect to all this - Larionov might have been giving Alex a very "Russian" viewpoint that didn't work for a kid who's spent so much time in North America, and it never meshed properly.
