Per Friedman
"About the Kris Versteeg situation, Montreal and Chicago were working on something and I heard a fifth-rounder was going to the Blackhawks. Versteeg said he didn’t veto over the lack of an extension. The trade didn’t happen, but I can’t say why with certainty. "
An odd one to be sure. Perhaps it was Versteeg and a 2nd or 3rd for the 5th? Kris has an overall cap hit of $4.7 million, but when the Hawks traded for him, salary was retained by Florida. His cap hit for the Hawks was only $2.2 million. Hawks are $5 Million over the cap as of today.

Hmm, the possible PAP replacement now? He would not be top of my list.

Me neither. Granted cracking the Hawks top six is a significantly harder thing to do, he's not an improvement imo. Hard to believe Kris is only 29. Seems he's been around forever.

With the names being tossed out by the media that Bergeron been talking about maybe best move is no move until we see prospects play.

He's no Patrick Sharp.

He's no Patrick Sharp. This is the best non move Bergevin ever made. Gotta say, with all the rumours about Bergevin talking to Chicago, and it was Versteeg .... I'm disappointed. Real disappointed. Was this another example of settling for a band-aid?

All I can say is it could have been a way of angling for a second round pick. A year of Versteeg at 2.2 million plus a second for a late pick.

The argument could be made I'm sure that anyone brought into our system is going to suffer offensively. But I think we are all being real hard on Patrick Sharp. Last year he had an off season, but he had four 65+ point seasons in the last 5 seasons in which he played more than 30 games, prior to last year. Versteeg has never gotten more than 55 (in his entire career) and was worse than Sharp in Sharp's off season. And while Sharp was putting up 65-70 point season, Versteeg was putting up 35-45 point seasons. The only thing that attracts Bergevin to Versteeg, is the number 2.2 ... His cap hit. It's value village shopping. Sharp on the Habs, is a first or second liner ... Versteeg is a third liner, who we will try to make into a first liner like we tried with Weise and Prust., Edit .. In the one season Sharp did not get 65+ points, he had 20 points in 28 games ... That prorates to about 60 points

As expensive as Sharp is, I do think he fits well.

Well, we don't have to take on his whole salary.

Well, we don't have to take on his whole salary. Sharp? No, we don't. Hawks are over the barrel atm. Could very well be the best deal they get is having to retain some of his salary.

Patrick Sharp is a tough sell for me ... no way he has the supporting cast in Montreal that he did in Chicago ... big difference for me, there ... Cheers.
