Read some blow by blow comments on hf from those watching live. He gets into it a bit with a person from the French media. Aside from that, coaching staff won't change, he apparently leaves door open for Galch to play center, kids will have shot at camp, he's 'not done' at this point. Still looking.

Glad to hear he isn't done ... If he is, I'm dreading the upcoming season. Perhaps the most telling comment that he's still looking comes very near the end of the second clip. "It's only July 2nd."

Aside from that, coaching staff won't change, Guess he figures the PP, among other scoring woes, wasn't a coaching problem. Obviously, the dearth of goals isn't a player development problem either. I really wonder what he thought of Therrien's post-elimination "mentally and physically drained" comment. he apparently leaves door open for Galch to play center, Well, he can't really close the door after his 2012 draft day comments. I'll believe it when I see it. As long as DD is in the rotation…I have my doubts.

Reported called the team a defensive team. He took issue with it as it pertained to they way they play compared to most of the league. There was an opportunity there to actually take Berg to task for lack of finish in top 6 and having a goon for a special teams coach, but the reporter failed and Berg shut him down.

Thanks for the explanation, blny.
All a reporter has to do if Berg says we don't play (and rely upon) a defensive game, is hold up a picture of Price with the 4 trophies.
We're actually more of a last-line-of-defense team at the moment.

We're actually more of a last-line-of-defense team at the moment. No prob. IMO, what Berg took issue with was the inference that the club doesn't try to score. I would agree with him for the most part. I think they do, there just aren't enough proficient at it.

Oh they try to score all right and one day they may perfect it. I hope I'm still alive by then.
Re Chucky, Berg said he made the 'centre' comment to take any pressure off Galchy that he HAD to be a centre. Ok but maybe Alex wants to be a centre, especially if he gets more ice time and responsibility. Anyway that's Berg's explanation for the comment.

Anyone think the pressure is starting to get to Marc Bergevin ... he's assertive when he speaks, but he tends to snap back sometimes ...
Cheers.

Anyone think the pressure is starting to get to Marc Bergevin ... he's assertive when he speaks, but he tends to snap back sometimes ... Cheers. Well, yes, the reality is Eastern Conference Final appearance followed by a division title cannot maintain pressure low in Montreal. Not when everyone sees legitimate elite players like Price, PK, and Max on the roster. So it is not a secret the window of championship opportunity is open (maybe for 1-3 or 4 years) and it is not enough for fans (or Moulson, I hope) to judge it is enough to say if we make the playoffs each year then perhaps the law of average brings the Cup back to Montreal. Bergevin knows this.

To be honest, he's been a giant breath of fresh air since he came aboard.
Unfortunately, the honeymoon's over. Everyone knows our Cup portal is now open with this core....and Bergevin can take a lot of credit for that improvement. But until he does something to improve the scoring (preferably a Top 6 point-getter)...then we'll continue to go as far as Carey takes us.
I really wonder what Kessel would've cost us. Not Galchenyuk. That's clear from what the Penguins gave up.
It'll be interesting to see what Kessel can do when the pressure is off somewhat--playing behind Malkin and Crosby. I think he'll thrive. He's back living in the States, playing with arguably the league's best one-two punch down the middle. I expect their PP to be deadly.
Just what any ailing PP would need.....you'd think.
Of course, none of that happens if he turns out to be the same malcontented slacker he was as a Leaf.

Kessel? As as far as MB's PC went I think after awhile dumb questions will start to frustrate anyone. Kassian is a cheap experiment, and Prust was team friendly, but turning into a guy whose only impact was in desperation dumb penalties. Bring on the kid with Bertuzzi upside.

Leafs' fans LOVED Kessel when they were on their way to beating the Bruins in the playoffs.
If not for that epic team collapse, the Leafs would've been in Round 2…
That collapse, to me, was the turning point for that whole core.
My point is, now Kessel is on a team where he isn't expected to be the key man (with little to no support) as he was in Toronto.
On Montreal, at least he'd have had Pacioretty to share that load.
Then again, maybe the character thing is across the board with Kessel, and Bergevin was wise to stay away.
I remember Kessel being picked last at the ASG a few years ago. There could've been a reason for that.
Time will tell….

It's interesting that you compare Kassian to Bertuzzi potential. In the Kassian thread I had suggested John Leclair. Bert and Leclair were 25 before they had a break out year and then they were big time offensive threats for 5 or 6 years. Bert was in the league 6 years before he got more than 20 goals (in single digits many of those) and then he got over 25, or well over, for 5 out of 6 years. Kassian's skill set is similar to these guys and hopefully his progression rate will be as well!

Assume I take my rose coloured glasses off for a moment and we traded Prust for Kliger. Ya, we're on the short end of the deal but not the worst trade in the world. Glasses back on and we just got John Leclair for Prust and Canuck fans are having Cam Neely nightmares all over again, and we are likely hoisting a cup in the next few years. I like the risk MB took. Now I'm going to leave my glasses on and see what Mrs. Habsorbed is doing!

But it seems most, if not all, of Bergevin's moves are these experiment type moves hoping to find lightning in a bottle. At some point, you have to go all in. Our window is not that big anymore. It's 3 yrs maximum, in my opinion ... If we plan on treading water next year, that window can close pretty quick

Stubbs is a balanced reporter. If he thinks Berg's patience with reporters is wearing thin, it must be. I guess having the same question asked for 24 months (why can't we sccore?) is going to get annoying. One solution is to get a scorer, naturally. Then the questions will stop. Or to improve scoring by committee (that's for you BC). Darn good thing no one asked him about the coaching, or he'd turn into Mount St. Helens.

But given what was available this past week, I can't think of any deal, trade or FA signing, that I would have wanted MB to be part of to get a top 6 (maybe Oshie but we would have had to give up a lot more than Prust). So given the market, I'm happy with what MB did, Kassian and he did't blow his wad. We'll know by Xmas if Zach is the lighting in the bottle and if not then MB may need to consider going all in at the trade deadline.

He was not willing to touch Eller, or any other regular roster player (not named Prust, who is really a fourth liner that we tried to overstretch) My issue with it, is that we could be on the outside looking in if we wait for the trade deadline, and that could be possibly squandering, one or two years of that window. You'll have a hard time convincing anyone to come here if we aren't in the mix next year.

Kilger was also a high draft pick, but it took him years to even become a regular in the NHL and then he had basically three seasons where he stuck and then he was done. Kassian in my opinion has better hands, is a heck of a lot tougher, and better potential. It's up to him though, as all the articles point out, and even he himself, it's whether or not he wants it badly enough. Maybe his old man being a fan of the Habs will be the tipping point, it's one thing to shame a city where they have a statue erected of their coach quitting, it's quite another where they have statues of the Rocket, Le Gros Bill and 24 banners hanging from the rafters.

You'll have a hard time convincing anyone to come here if we aren't in the mix next year. I'll have to respectfully disagree with that viewpoint, I think that any player who wants the pressure, and desires to play for the most storied franchise in hockey history will always want to play here. Even if they have to give up 5-10% more in taxes. As long as Price, Subban, Max are around and their GM doesn't become the second coming of Bob Gainey and TT is picking their players in late June they'll at the very least be competitive and a fine place to play. Also as MB said, it's only July 2nd, three months of trading and upgrading to go. I like that if he sees something he wants he goes and gets it, and if he sees any way to upgrade at all even if only on the 4th line he gets it done, while getting salary cap and a draft pick coming back.

Glad to hear he isn't done ... If he is, I'm dreading the upcoming season. Do you have any suggestions about how Bergevin can upgrade the Habs? Sign Semin or Kostitsyn? Bring up Scherbak and/or McCarron? I can't think of much else.

Semin's skill is exactly what we need. His character is not. Kostitsyn at the top of his game would help us too, but what game is he bringing these days? The safest bet is to see how McCarron and Scherbak perform. I'm sure Berg is continuing to pursue that elusive top 6 guy...with the price being the only obstacle.

I am sure both Semin and/or AK could be had for a short term and affordable money, but what do you get will likely be the debate that the Berg, Dudley and others will be wrestling with if they are even considering one of these guys. MT's strengths do not seem to include working with enigmatic players. However, we need more goals from the wings and these guys can score. In addition to McCarron and Scherbak, who still have yet to play a single AHL game, I expect Andrighetto, Hudon and Carr (who quietly led the Dogs in goals last season) would be getting a close look if the Berg decides to make no other moves and just look internally.
