3-0 first period lead.
Then we get only 9 shots in the next 40 minutes.
Oilers get the winner with 1:02 left.
You could see it coming.
Price had to make 2 fantastic saves in the third, otherwise it would've been over earlier. Not to mention the sure goal Subban saved.
Are we really back to "no lead is safe" land?
Two weak calls on us...and a couple of missed third period calls on the Oilers....but we opened the gates with that lousy second period.

Would like to know what happened on the non-calls where Subban was high-sticked and Byron was held. Both led to eventual goals. Regardless of how they're playing at that point, those are penalties that need to be called.

Blew it, but got what they deserved.
Very little push after the first. Can't do that, the guys should know by now.

They literally stopped playing as soon as they went up 3-0. As soon as the Oilers scored that barely-over- the-line goal I knew they'd catch them. Didn't think the Habs could actually blow the game in regulation. Thought they were in for at least a 3-on-3 schooling.

After that bogus call on Fleischmann & then the fluke goal I had a bad feeling about the game. How little effort is required to get only 9 shots in 40 minutes against Edmonton. Brutal effort.

The winning goal is yet another vivid example of why the Habs will remain Cup pretenders as long as Desharnais plays important minutes on this team. Being out muscled for a puck that he reached first by that 'noted' power forward Nugent Hopkins made me sick. Time to put the Trojan Man in the crease against the Flames.

Galchy, Eller, and Flynn got one shift after it was 3-3.
Our 4th line was our best.
Gallagher always digs....but Pleks and Pacioretty were nowhere after the first period.
Good luck tomorrow, guys.
Calgary's gonna play a tougher game.

These guys can wreak havoc on a game & then just walk away.

Calgary's lost 3 in a row and have only won twice all season thus far.

Two weak calls on us...and a couple of missed third period calls on the Oilers....but we opened the gates with that lousy second period. Refs have bad games, but really, you create your own situations and if the Habs had played harder, they'd never be in the situation they found themselves in. The refs missed the high stick on PK, but they didn't cause the poor defensive positioning that gave the Oilers so much space and time. One of the players (Gallagher?) was quoted after we won 8 games, that it was really hard to keep up that pace that got them off to the good start, so maybe they just worked their butts off and then when you can't keep it up, you revert to your true talent level. I think they're better than the Nucks (bad bounces) and the Oil (inexperienced, developing team), so we could have won both games. I think what we saw tonight was about right. We should be able to play a little better, but we lacked a lot of creativity offensively when we didn't have the defense join and we rarely outmanned Edmonton. We got hemmed in our end a fair bit, but the main stuff I saw was simply no offensive creativity. When we got the puck in transition, it seemed merely a matter of time before we turned it over. As CH said above, Talbot didn't break a sweat in the last 2 periods. I have to admit I missed the whole first period, but from what I saw after that, it's hard to get excited about the Habs. Ok, we're now 9 and 2. Horrible start, huh? Maybe I should chill out. Can't shake that nagging disastrous feeling, though. That wasn't a very good defense corps we faced tonight and we made them look pretty good from the 2nd period on. This team has to want to play hard and with discipline, but they didn't show it tonight.

This game is a good reason why I didn't buy the Rogers package to give me the extra games. Nothing drives me crazy more than lack of effort. They just totally quite in the last 40 minutes.

On TSN690 right now, they're saying that Semin hasn't done anything near as egregious as DD did on that play. Game 1 vs. the Leafs. Sloppy win. Games 2-7....solid team effort that had me thinking they'd perhaps turned a corner...those 6 games raised expectations. Games 8-10....bad habits creeping back...but still got 4 pts. because of inferior opposition goaltending. Game 11...absolutely brutal. What team do we really have?

Curious to see how they react to the media afterwards.
If they're as good as they should be, they'll be visibly pissed. If not, they'll look depressed or down.

And here we go again with a 4th liner in the Top 6.
How about moving Fleischmann up to the second line (he's had a solid start to the season)....leaving the 4th line alone....and putting Byron with DD and Weise?
If MT's not going to dress Semin against the Flames, that's what he should do, IMO.

Did anyone notice that the Oilers had drafted Hall, Nugent-Hopkins, Yakupov, Nurse, McDavis? I fear they'll win a Cup long before the Habs. Even the bleary-eyed Bruins fans will wake up.

Our main trouble remains down the middle.
Galchy is at least two years behind in terms of learning the ropes...(I sure hope they leave him there).....and Pleks and DD are not centres on a Stanley Cup winner. Pleks is a figure skater when it comes to the playoffs....and DD is simply too small everywhere but his heart.
I said even during our solid streak that we're still missing that Stamkos/Tavares/Toews presence. But those types aren't available.
18-year-old McDavid would already be the #1 centre on our team. Tremendous hockey player. He gave us fits all night.
How did Plekanec do against a weak D tonight?

Sitting in LAS waiting to fly out ... didn't see the game but this thread resembles a lot of the ones I read last year ... if I'm the Flames, I'm looking forward to playing the Habs tomorrow night ... if I'm Bob Hartley my message is clear ... don't give up for a second even if you're down three goals ... so much for changing the western-swing paradigm ...
Cheers.

I'm not watching the flames game... I expect to see DD back as the first line centre against the flames.

Don't think I've seen a softer play than Desharnais' on the winning goal. Nuge has bad shoulders and he let himself get run over. Weak. Hope they have a better effort tonight.

Here it is. Nugent-Hopkins barely touched him. Did Desharnais bail because he thought he was going to get hit??? Again…if that had been Semin… I'm not boiling the game down to that one play…but that was brutal…and it definitely cost us a point. Then again, who knows….the Oilers still had 1:02 to go. The way the game was going, they could've easily got a couple more scoring chances.

Therrien, paraphrased: Starting the second period….it was really frustrating to see our team play that way….and we got what we deserved.

I don't know what to say about him.

Therrien, paraphrased: Starting the second period….it was really frustrating to see our team play that way….and we got what we deserved. And how much of "see(ing) our team play that way" is on the coach? Isn't he supposed to be the one that keeps them on the straight and narrow? If we fall back into last year's habit of sitting on leads then that has to be 100% on the coaching staff. Whether the players develop that tendency on their own or not, it's incumbent on the coaches to keep the team pointed in the right direction.

Well, he DID say that the system is 95% the same (might as well have said 100%)….so, I don't know what to say about that…. In Games 2-7 this year, we saw a puck possession team that kept the pedal to the metal for the full 60 minutes. No mercy. If THAT team had played last night, it would've been 6-0 after two periods and game over! But we haven't seen that team since the St. Louis game. I really don't know what IS and what ISN'T within a coach's power….but Bruce Boudreau has the Wicked Witch of the West's hourglass on his desk.

With a minute left in a tie game you should be protecting that point by putting trustworthy players on the ice. The coaches need to share some of the blame here by having Desharnais on the ice.

Epic Fail is a very appropriate label. It is far more family-friendly than my descriptors as I sat there in disbelief watching this time warp experience in the flesh. As the Oil pay respects and farewell to that way-past-due barn, they have been dragging out old Oilers to pay tribute to the better days of old. Well, the Habs were accommodating and replayed some of the bad habits of not that long ago last night. You cannot play 20 minutes against any team and expect anything other than a loss.
My three goats of the game (cannot issue three stars for that performance):
1. The entire coaching staff and players for the game they played for the last forty minutes of the game. Horrible. You let a beaten team back into the game, when even their fans had conceded "here we go again". I was hearing it in the stands.
2. The brilliance of having DD on the ice with one minute left to play in a game when territorially you are getting massively outplayed and getting one point going to OT would be a "start the car" moment. I did not give them a chance in you know where in 3 on 3 OT against those talented young forwards, but there was hope that we could steal a point.
3. Jason Strudwick for dropping his watch from the gondola and it landing beside me. It was a really horrible watch. You would think a retired NHLer that now works with CITY TV could get a better wrist watch. That was a dog. At least he was quite thankful that it survived the fall when he came down and retrieved it.
Back to the use of DD. For the record, I do not wish DD any ill will. He is a member of my favourite hockey team, so his success is good for the club. What I take exception to is the coach's use (or often over-use) of DD. He should not be on the ice protecting a lead, or trying to preserve a point. He was outmuscled by a scarecrow. Albeit a very talented scarecrow, but a stick figure no less on the physical front. Eller is a puck possession expert by comparison, why were he and Chucky not on the ice? MT singled out Semin and said his plays were responsible for some goals which influenced the decision to sit him out last night. By that same standard, DD should be enjoying the Calgary game from great heights.
And Weise on the PP? Even Fleischmann would be a better option.
Let's hope the boys are as miffed today about last night as we are. We might see a better game in Calgary if that is the case. If not....
