Nice response to the Edmonton game....although it was touch-and-go for the first 2 periods.
Ortio was brutal in net for the Flames....but at least we kept firing on him and didn't let up.
Gotta feel good for Weise. DSP gets his first of the year.
Byron with the speedy, backbreaking shortie to make it 5-2.
Eller picked up his game after being benched.
Condon was an adventure early...but got the job done.
First line was kept in check.
Flames GA/G is now likely 30th.

The third and fourth lines got it done offensively. You can win a lot of games with that formula. Max, Pleks and Chucky a bit invisible...but they will find it again.
Weise...hard to not to have a very broad smile after his performance tonight. Heck, even an interview between periods.
Byron was glad to provide his own little payback tonight.
Good for Condon. Tough not playing that much, but getting 3-0 out of an NHL rookie is noting to sneeze at. Another nice little piece of the puzzle.
MT may never play Semin again (who did not predict this would happen at some point?).

Is Eller likely to be benched against Winnipeg?

First period was a bit sketchy. Ortio was awful, thankfully. The Flames had an amazing year last year but I believe it was a blip. their forwards ar enot that good and their D played over their heads.
as for the Habs: Chucky is still learning but we have to stick with it - he has all the tools and is by far our best player one on one and will only get better. He will be the big centre we've been waiting for soon enuf.
What's with PK? He seems so listless. Use to be that even when he played poorly he was a presence. The last 5 game or so you hardly know he's on the ice. Since he came into the league you could go to a game and afterwards even an uninformed fan would say "who is that guy?". Not sure he would stand out at all the last 5 games. Rare rushes, often pushed off the puck (McD in Edm), and the number of unforced icings is ridiculous. Is he focused too much on his "branding". He should not forget that hockey is his meal ticket.
Condon played well. 3-0 is pretty impressive for a back up, particularly a rookie.
Gilbert is the weak link out there. He is a turnover machine and often can't get it out even when given ample time. Would really like to see Pats in there.

Is Eller likely to be benched against Winnipeg? i didn't think Eller played badly. Even if he did, he has a new line mate and is playing a new position (as is his centre) so he's deserving of some slack. MT need sot be patient. It's an investment with that line.

It's always great to see all those Habs jerseys in the stands on these road games and hear the 'Go Habs Go' chant. But how often do you see the ice littered with hats when a visiting player gets the hat-trick? Hats off to Weiser!

How high is Weise's PDO (luck)? He had a bunch on all 3 goals. Neither of the first two would have gone in against a goalie playing a normal game and on the 3rd, Flash fanned on the shot when he brought the puck to his forehand, taking both Ortio and the defender with him, leaving a gaping cage for Weise to finish off. We'll take them, obviously, because we get lucky goals scored against us too (Vancouver), but shouldn't expect that type of luck to hold up. Dutch Gretzky can savour this night for a while.

Is Eller likely to be benched against Winnipeg? He played well after the benching. Are NHL bench coaches in constant communication with their assistants upstairs? In the second intermission, the RDS panel showed huge areas of open ice in our zone caused by Eller's positioning/decisions. Benchings such as Eller's could very well be analyzed and enacted by committee. Teams have a large coaching staff for a reason. I doubt very much a head coach makes these decisions unilaterally. If I'm wrong, somebody please correct me.

I believe that's points in 3 straight games for Smith-Pelly.
Happy to see Beaulieu score but it's hard to believe that's only his 2nd NHL goal.

He should not forget that hockey is his meal ticket. Agree on Subban. The 2nd period against EDM was particularly bad - an offside on a breakaway & later a terrible clearing pass right up the middle of the zone. Some games he's a force and has a multi point game and other days looks ordinary. He doesn't miss a lot of games & I think he plays through a lot of stuff. Wonder if he's injured or ill.

Wasn't pretty. Lots of over commitment by guys in the defensive zone.
Happy for all the grunts. Weise's first may have been a weak shot squeaking through, but he started the sequence with a nice clearing pass to Flash (with his back facing up ice). He had the presence of mind to get turned around and up ice quickly.
Condon is going to have to work on his rebound control.

As mentioned in another thread, I was at the game last night. I can honestly say that over the last few years I have dreaded going to Habs games. In the 17yrs since moving here from Mtl, it's been loss after loss after...Last night's game was certainly not perfect, and the score might have been different if Ortio had played even half decently, but still after all the years of horrible games out here, I'll gladly take it.
Naturally I've seen many Flames games. I still believe that they're a good team, but something is out of sync. In Monahan, Gaudreau, and Bennett, they have three of the finest young players in the league. Gaudreau especially is a magician everytime he has the puck. Their defence, with Giordano, Brodie, Russell and Hamilton, is top tier, though they haven't played up to that level. The main problem has been their goaltending which has been very below average.

That was fun, eh Marvin? I almost felt bad for the Flames with all of the ole chants. The guys even came out for the three star selections, that never happens for the visitors in this building. Hats flood the ice, standing ovation at the end. There were no Flames fans booing, they'd already left.

I went to a Habs game in Calgary in the late 90s when my sister first moved out there. Mr. October himself Brian Savage scored a hat trick, it was October after all. Both teams were terrible but at least the Habs won.

When the opposition has louder fans in the crowd (the score had everything to do with that), that has to p***-off the Flames organization. That's the most fun I've had at a hockey game since my days in Mtl.

You're no longer starvin', Marvin! Must've felt great….especially when Byron got that shORTIO! Heck I've seen enough Habs wins over the years, but none in Calgary. The person I felt happiest for was my son who at 17 had seen ONE Habs victory in Calgary! He walked out of the Saddledome (in his Subban jersey and Habs cap) floating on air.

Very glad for Weise. He's not a top six forward but always seems to know when to score big goals.

Oh sure, they lose the one I recorded and crush the opponents on the one I can't see.
It sounds that we feasted on AHL goaltending. OK, it happens. BUT.....and there is always a butt.....I'm not too thrilled with the two shooting gallery wins and Edmonton game. Let's just call that three bad hair games and move forward.

I keep thinking he is our new Markov Version 2 but so far, well, not bad but he's not showing star potential. Still young, but he should be good for .5 points a game within a year or so.

I thought that he was never really productive enough as an offensive defenseman, especially given his skating and skillset. But once I saw the scrappy, competitive side to his game, I realized how well rounded of a player he is. Not to mention the game relies more and more on the ability to exit the zone quickly, an area in which he excels. Beaulieu is a keeper. I just wish he got more ice time. His best games last year were when he was given 20+ minutes, but he's just not being given the role yet.
