Superb work from the bottom 6 again. Three stars....Byron, Fleishmann, and DD!
Full team effort! Didn't let up after we were up by a few.
Condon was solid when called upon.
Can't ask for better.
11-2-0.
Byfuglien taking quite a few liberties...wonder if the league will take a look at that hit on Gallagher....
Likely the "tall/short" excuse, and Gallagher got right up and suffered no ill effects....but the head sure appeared to be the initial point of contact from the replay.

The Jets looked like the team that Maurice inherited. Very undisciplined. If our first line was going tonight that's a 8-1 game.
Games like that show why Buff should never get Norris consideration. He's not a defender.

Switched to the World Series on Sportsnet....and the hockey promo is glorifying who else but Byfuglien and his huge hits, and how the Jets are the tallest team in the league....as they're taking on the Leafs next.

Karlsson doesn't take the unnecessary risks that Buff takes. At least he knows where his own end is and puts in an effort to get back there. The moment Buff crosses center ice he thinks he's a forward and looks to play down low.

Very impressed with Desharnais, Fleischman, Beaulieu and Condon ... Weise with another strong effort ... a PPG is always nice to see in the box score ... the top lines will sort themselves out eventually ... the lower two lines are dictating the play, though ...
Cheers.

Puck seems to be going in with almost ease at the moment. That streak won't continue but it's fun to watch right now.

Byron with another shorty. He's got wheels, that's for sure.

Buff can skate pretty well when he isn't gassed. His conditioning and work ethic keep him from having gas to back check. Few guys with a full tank are going to out skate Karlsson.

Condon 4-0. Not going to be easy as the starter especially with Toker just waiting to get his role back. Lots of pressure but the guy seems as composed as (dare I say it) Carey. Deserved the shut out.
Our weakest forwards were Chucky and Eller. But gotta keep going. As long as there not in the minus column at the end of the game.
Gilbert just keeps messing up and Tinordi and Pateryn just keep getting stale.

Condon 4-0. Time to think of trading that Price guy. He should fetch at least a first. Possibly a first and a journeyman.

Strong all-around game.
Condon keeps on impressing.
Byron clearly doesn't have Semin's talent or size, but he also doesn't have his (iffy) work ethic and his speed can create things. A Semin at the top of his game would be a better player, but, he isn't at the top of his game.
Gilbert.... I still don't like him out there. But the fact is that his passing game will be stronger than Pateryn's, so I expect he'll get a lot of chances since he fits in better with the overall system of quick puck movement.
The game ended with DSP along with Eller and Galchenyuk and I think that might be something that carries over into the next game. Flynn is a great 4th liner but has little offensive upside, so he doesn't belong on the top 2 or 3 lines. Gotta say, with the way they're playing, the DD line is turning into the 2nd line...

He's small but speedy and crafty. i think it is now accepted that the old standard of a fourth lines made up of sluggish unskilled strongmen is a thing of the past. And many teams, with the Habs leading the way, are going with speedsters on the fourth line who work hard and hunt down and tire the opposition. Byron fits that mould. The real test will be in the playoffs and whether theses speedsters are up to the long best of 7 battles. I hope so as it's much more fun to watch. No doubt our 3rd and 4th lines were way ahead of the big tough guys on the Jets all night. Evolution!

Byfuglien will have a hearing/phone call for the headshot on Gallagher, who had yet to touch the puck. I'm expecting anywhere from a fine to 1 game and ONLY because Gallagher got right up. Slo-mo from RDS. That was a measured, predatory hit. Byfuglien had time to make it shoulder-on-shoulder…but he drove across the front of the body, shoulder into head. Byfuglien already has a suspension history. 4 games last April for a vicious cross-check on J.T. Miller who was already down. No suspension for this senseless attack on a vulnerable Pominville this past October. (language warning! Ha!) 2:00 for boarding. What a joke.

I honestly don't think it's worthy of a suspension. His elbow came up at the end, and that makes it look really bad, and for sure he was hitting to hurt, but that's still part of the game. I think he's just a bigger man who saw a smaller player with his head down and he did what all physical players are taught to do - take the body and skate through your man.

Granted, I didn't play competitive hockey beyond Juvenile All-Star, but I was never taught to check like that. In that situation, i.e. close to a 90-degree angle, I was taught to tuck my lower arm to my chest and target the near shoulder....that is IF it was to be a clean check. Not to skate in front of a player and catch his head with my shoulder.

Two posts that I'm disagreeing with you!. I'm such a rebel. Buff will not get a suspension. We'll never know what was going through his head, but the video just doesn't provide enough evidence that he was targeting the head. IMO, I have no doubt he was. He could have hit Gallagher, shoulder to shoulder and taken him out of the play, but he avoided the direct hit and preferred the indirect (frontal) hit. As you state the elbow came up at the end. Why? Probably because he was trying to make the head a more direct point of contact that it would normally be if he didn't raise the elbow. Buff's kind of a powder keg too, which make it quite likely IMO that he temporarily lost his senses.

This is where I think the league needs to look directly at the hit itself and not try to assess whether or not it was intentional. Byfuglien can plead his case all he wants but the result is that Gallagher was hit in the head. Intent shouldn't matter; the hit should, and because it was a hit to the head, that's why he's in trouble. I don't care if he meant to do it or not.

Yeah, I agree with you, Matt ... it's clear the league (and NHLPA) doesn't want to get rid of head hits completely ... if they did they'd probably agree with what you point out here ... however, so long as there's entertainment value in it, they'll continue to dance around the intent issue ... Cheers.

Byfuglien has a 9am hearing tomorrow with the league for his hit on BG. Good ... I used like the idea of Dustin Byfuglien in the Montreal at one point ... but, he strikes me as a guy who marches to his own drum, at times ... that hit on Brendan Gallagher last night was one of those times ... it's unfortunate but the hit-to-injure check is part of the game and has been for a long time ... if the league establishes intent to injure, and they're really sincere about cleaning up the game, then hand out a punishment to Byfuglien and maybe consider taking the official aside and let him know that hit warranted a penalty ... where it becomes tricky to discipline officials for something like this is when personal judgments and perceptions conflict ... for instance, what may have been an infraction in the judgment of the league, may have been perceived differently for the on-ice officials ... still, Byfuglien clearly had intent to injure and there's a penalty for that ... probably the only yellow-aged sheet in the book ... Cheers.

The refs called it elbowing, no doubt because the elbow came way up after the hit.
But the replay clearly shows he skated in front of Gallagher and it was shoulder to head, which spun Gallagher around to his right. And yes, he didn't have the puck yet.
Gallagher was very lucky to have not sustained a strained neck at the very least, let alone a concussion.
I wish there were better angles of the play…..but in the slo-mo of the RDS clip, you can pretty well see it. HIs head snaps around first.
Garbage play by a loose cannon.
I wonder if the hearing is in person…or on the phone.
