For contact to the head to be deemed a penalty, or suspensionable, it doesn't require the elbow to be the body part making contact. Buff skates across the front of Gallagher, and comes up with his shoulder at the last moment. That shoulder makes contact with the head. Yes, there is a significant height difference. Still, the manner in which he makes contact is the issue. The upward motion of his body targets the head, deliberately. All he had to do was hit Brendan in the shoulder. He's got 80lbs on on the Hab.

It's a four-way tie for our top scorers on the team with 12 points.
Guess who leads the way: Desharnais (3-9), followed by Markov (1-11), Plekanec (5-7), and Subban (1-11)

I used like the idea of Dustin Byfuglien in the Montreal at one point ... but, he strikes me as a guy who marches to his own drum, at times ... . I like his hits and toughness but it will introduce an element that the rest of the team is not built around. He's not scary enough by himself to be a nuclear deterrence to what game he's best at. Worse.....he'd be our number 5. Beau, PK, Markov and Petry are either quicker, smarter, faster or combinations of that. Nah...I'm happy with having the top 3 defence in the league as ithe iso now. I'm hoping by February, Beau is Markov Jr. ..and that makes us the best defence in the league. Or......we upgrade Mitchel with an improved Pateryn. Both would be.....Ministry Of Defence V2. Wow...did I just write that sober?

No supplemental discipline for Byfuglien. Not even a fine.
He explained himself….and the NHL agreed.
What a mess of an explanation from the DoPS….from now on pronounced: DOPES.
Both going for the puck.
Gallagher didn't brace himself until the last second, when he turned his head. Ha!
Byfuglien tipped the puck away…and braced himself.
There was some head contact….but it wasn't the initial point of contact. Hip contact with Gallagher's hands. Then the head. Ha!
The size difference was also mentioned at least twice.
Also something about the onus being on Gallagher to protect himself.
Basically, incidental contact in a race for the puck.
Wow!
I'll try to find the audio clip of the league's explanation.

Here's a site with the explanation: LEAGUE EXPLANATIONLove how this write-up mentions: Byfuglien, the subject of multiple warnings….So, I guess he got a warning for his cheap shot on Pominville last month, too.

Buff targeted Gally's head. That was a predatory move.
Too bad the league is only periodically interested in protecting its players.

It's amazing how the league can somehow deduce that Gallagher didn't brace himself until the last second when he turned his head.
In short, the perpetrator gets a chance to lie explain his side…but the league gets to judge what the victim did.
Gallagher turned his head alright….because of impact with Byfuglien's shoulder.
The good news is that Gallagher's alright…because that was very close to devastation.

Gallagher didn't even have the puck--nor did he touch it at any point prior to the hit. What was he supposed to defend himself from?

I thought the hit on Pominville was worse than the hit on Gallagher. He was on his knees & facing the boards. It was a chickensh!t hit on a defenseless player. If all he got was a stern talking to what's the point of a disciplinary committee.

Someone there must have really hated Raffi Torres because he got creamed (deservedly). Buff is close to that territory, but nothing for him. Quintal Syndrome strikes again.

The DOPES has been manned by the wrong people.
Colin Campbell.
Brendan Shanahan. 22nd all-time PIM.
Chris Pronger in now on staff as a director. 8 times suspended.
Last year, they were thinking about adding Scott Stevens...14th all-time PIM....and one of the dirtiest hitters ever...although those hits were "legal" during his career.
Good luck to Quintal trying to dole out punishment without being called a kitty cat. Campbell still oversees that dept. as Executive V.P. and Director of Hockey Ops.
If they really wanted to clean up the game, that department would be manned by the likes of Marc Savard, Paul Kariya, and Steve Moore.

The league is a joke they give lip service.
It is going to take a death and a wrongful death lawsuit that goes after the owners and commissioner before anything has a hope of changing

Condon 4-0. Not going to be easy as the starter especially with Toker just waiting to get his role back. Lots of pressure but the guy seems as composed as (dare I say it) Carey. Deserved the shut out. Our weakest forwards were Chucky and Eller. But gotta keep going. As long as there not in the minus column at the end of the game. Gilbert just keeps messing up and Tinordi and Pateryn just keep getting stale. Given the chance Tinordi could replace Emelin. Also Pateryn can now replace Gilbert easily. Could MT see the light?

Ferraro also agreed that the hit on Pominville was suspendable...and the NHL blew it there. He agrees with the NHL on the Gallagher decision...and posted this still of the hit on his Twitter account. It shows Byfuglien's elbow about to go into Gallagher's chest or arm...and the shoulder is about an inch away from his head. Not a concrete angle...but the best one available, and likely the one the NHL used. Ferraro added that, in his opinion, there was definitely malice involved. An inch away from obliteration. As Chris Nilan said several times today, when talking about the decision: Whatever.

Not a single mention that Buff avoided a shoulder to shoulder check. I can't recall, but how close was the puck?
Ps. They should hire me. It'll only cost them about 4 weeks salary and I'll have it cleaned up. Couple of lifetime suspensions should do it.
