The #1 line has not been so the past few games.
Pacioretty looks unmotivated. He's not driving to the net the way he usually does.'
You wonder if he's nursing an injury.
Plekanec.....don't get me started.
Time to move Galchy up there and drop Pleks between Eller and Flynn....or perhaps it's time to give Semin another chance against the Isles on Thursday.
3-on-3 is a further aberration of the game.

Agreed, CH. In a tight game like this, our top line has to be our top line. Gallagher seems to be the only one consistently plugging away.

I want no part of the AnderSENS in the playoffs.
He almost delivered a comeback last year...after taking over from the Hamburglar.

I'd try....at least for a GAME.....
Pacioretty-Galchenyuk-Gallagher
Eller-Plekanec-Semin
Flynn or Byron would sit....numbers game.
We gotta re-invigorate at least one of the supposed Top 2 lines.

What's Stock talking about? Weise is getting his due!
Making it appear as if he's the only who's noticed that Weise has been producing? Sounds like a Cherry move....

Thought the boys played well. Dominated the first period. Coulda, shoulda won in the third especially with the great PP at the end. Not much you can do when the opponent's goalie is the first star. Got the single point which is good.
Couldn't believe how many times in the second we had guys in perfect scoring positions with the puck and either got the whiff, the fan or the broken stick.

I was going to post on the GDT after the 2nd period "Is Max dressed?". One of the reasons I was reluctant for him to get the C was that he does disappear for stretches of games. Having said that i am happy with him wearing the C as he wears it with class and dignity. I don't blame Max for the loss although that was a dreadful turnover in OT. I blame MT. Why is Max who had a weak game starting the OT 3 on 3? We've talked about this before: MT's poor in game coaching and inability to identify or recognize who is on their game and who is not. I'm sure they've praticed the 3 on 3 with Max starting and sure enough MT ploughs ahead even though anyone watching the game could see that Max was not in the game.

I get frustrated watching Gallagher work his tail off on every shift while Pleks uses his usual economy of energy. That's why I want to see Galchy up there. He's our only hope of a true #1 centre. He's hungry. So put him with the spark plug and the captain.
Pleks will still get his points and play well defensively in the #2 spot.

I would like DSP to stay on the second line. I agree about putting Pleky on the 2nd line. Maybe Galchy can wake Patches up.

I have not watched any 3 on 3 since the preseason, but it was very obvious that games can and will end early with so much open ice. A bad pass, a bad line change, a whiffed shot...there are so many things that can turn into an odd man rush the wrong way. That is why the first few shifts are critical. Sure, MT wants to give Pleks and Patches a chance to get their offensive game back on track...but they were invisible all game (and all week in fact). Some combo of guys like Mitchell, Byron, Flynn with their speed and transition game should thrive in this situation. DD and Flash have such great chemistry right now, and the lack of tight checking in OT would help DD excel in that environment. Galchenyuk and Eller, who at times have stalled a bit down low, are a nice combination of a skilled high IQ centre and a puck possession winger whose game should cause defenders grief with extra open ice. It is sometimes hard to understand ice time and benching decisions based on Meri T. I am but a mere fan.

I didn't see last night's game so won't comment on it, but one can still see the issues we face if you look at the discussion points made above. We are speculating on playing Weise or DSP on the 2nd line. While both have their good points, neither should ever be playing on a top 6 unit unless it's an injury emergency. I realize most teams have this same problem, but if we want to be true SC contenders, we shouldn't be trying to solve this problem with bottom 6 talent. The reason we are contenders is because Weise and DSP are still bottom 6 talents on the Habs and not yet worthy of a higher calling. Heck, even Gally isn't a first line winger, being much better suited to the second line.
So a bit more talent would be nice. Perhaps later this year, one of the kids in St. John's can fit the bill.
PS. We have one top 3 forward on the top line. They'll have their good days, but Pleks and Gally are better 2nd line material. Just like Desharnais....play them where they are best suited and they will reward you. Not that there is much choice at this time.

TSN690 talking about 3 on 3 and that it succeeds in the counter-attack game: you don't score on the initial attack but on the 2 or 3-on-1 that comes from grabbing the puck and flying out of the zone after a good defensive series.

Pacioretty's in a funk, and I don't blame Therrien for thinking that he might benefit with the open ice 3-on-3. Pleks opted to go behind the net for a backhand pass instead of into the corner to support Pacioretty because once the puck was turned over, Plekanec had to double back to turn the 3-on-1 into a 3-on-2. Pacioretty was not catching up to the play by any stretch.
Pacioretty and Plekanec are supposed to be the defensively responsible ones, so again, I don't mind Therrien's decision to put them out there. Bad plays by two of your players on the same shift are hard to overcome 3-on-3.

Just like Desharnais....play them where they are best suited and they will reward you. Not that there is much choice at this time. You mean we should try and pick up a guy like Semin? I think Gally is a first line winger on just about any team. He brings a rare dimension that is invaluable to any line - skill, mucking, speed, tenacity, and competitive spirit that is contagious. Max is a first lne winger! So we're back to the age old debate of who should be our #1 centre. I think most have accepted long ago that Pleks is a good #2 BUT HE'S NOT A #1. Chucky is showing offensive skill with his moves, he's working hard, doing well in face off circle. Put him with Gally (everyone does well with Gally and Chucky has before) and Max. The opponent will have to focus on Max and Gally and presto Chuck is a leading scorer! The second line has been our least productive so even if Pleks doesn't change things on the second line not much of a down side. But with Eller and DSP they'd be a pretty good shut down line.

I'll graciously agree to disagree with you on Gallagher. While I love the kid, his strength is his heart, determination, character and a decent shot. He's a strong skater in that he's very hard to knock off his feet (massive thighs), but if you check out how he is in races for the puck, there are lots of guys that get there ahead of him. I'm just pointing out that speaking of strictly top end speed, he's not up there. Faster than Semin? You bet. Gallagher is our best right winger by far, so I'm not knocking him, just wishing we had someone else who was a sniper in that spot. Tyler Seguin works and Stamkos fits the bill too. Semin was a cheap gamble and that bet still isn't over I don't think. Therrien is sending a message to him, so we'll see if he gets it. Even if he has lost a step, if he applies himself with half of Gallaghers persistence, he can get 20 goals and help make the Chucky line work.

Bad plays by two of your players on the same shift are hard to overcome 3-on-3. The single thing you have to do in 3 on 3 OT, is hold onto the puck. It can have such huge swings and is such a high risk situation that letting the other team have the puck can be suicide. You have to hold onto the puck during line changes because the cost of dumping it in to allow a change is too high. On Ottawa's goal last night, if Condon had managed to make the save, it's a breakaway going the other way, because Karlsson was parked right in front of Condon. To be most successful you lose possession only when the puck's in the back of the net. I know that's an impossible demand, but it's what the team should strive for and what should be pounded into them. Hold onto the puck until you have a great chance to score.

Perhaps I should have used the word "quick" instead of "speed". But his speed is not a liability. And maybe he does get there second from time to time, but he always seems to be the one that comes away with the puck. Not saying he's the best winger on any first line but if you look at other teams' first lines and who they have as there second best winger I doubt i would trade Gally for many of those guys.

I too would keep Gally ahead of lots of other guys. You can't replace what he brings to the team. In any case, it's more important to get that #1 centre than to improve on Gallagher.

The Crosby thing is not that far fetched IMO. He's obviously not happy under Johnston's system. Who knows?

I think that a key thing in the 3 on 3 will be to NEVER have two forwards (or players) behind the opposing goal line. It's just too far to get back. You can have one there, but the second guy should be either in front of the net, or in the face off dot. Still in a great position to score and/or get a rebound, but also not so committed that he can't at least support his defenseman on the way back.
Obviously that's not what happened last night. Oh well, lesson learned.
You'd like for your backup goalie to win 50% of the games he's in, and upon hearing that Price was hurt I thought to myself that four points this week would be more than acceptable, all things considered. We've got three already, so I think we're in good shape. Heck, the great start is what probably helped management decide to shut-down Price for the whole week (and half of next week, given when the first game is that week). They give him a good 7-10 days to recover from whatever ails him, and even if the team loses all four they're still in excellent shape. But Condon has already gotten 3 out of possible 4 points, so really this is just gravy.

Was listening to TSN690 on the way into work and I remember one of them saying, "... if you're going to lose at 3-on-3, that's the way to do it ..." the team that has the transition is in a better position to win than the team that has two players caught up ice ... I also heard on last night's broadcast that this was Ottawa's fifth(?) kick at OT, while this was Montreal's first ... they've been through it before and they basically schooled the Habs ... be that as it may, we can complain about it all we want, it's the same as it was for penalty shots ... unless the league wants it out then it's staying ... having said that, I still have no problem going back to a tie game with no OT ... Cheers.

I also heard on last night's broadcast that this was Ottawa's fifth(?) kick at OT yup, and the first one that didn't go to a shootout you can't have that, you'd have teams playing for a tie! as opposed to them playing for a tie in OT and hoping to win in a shootout

How did Weise get to be one of the top goal scorers on the Habs? He's not supposed to be, but that's like telling a hawk it can't fly. Talk about secondary scoring! That's one trade Bergevin will never have to regret,
