The player's contracts are guaranteed ... if managements are as well, then that's the ultimate self preservation Is that because players take out insurance policies on their contracts ... I remember reading that Crosby insured his contract for $1 million/year ... I'll try to find it and post it later ... have to take a work break ... Cheers.

Unlike pro football, NHL contracts are guaranteed. The player get's paid whether he plays or not. Clubs often insure the player's contract in case they get a long term injury. Not sure what Crosby was looking to insure, unless it was because he was playing in a non-NHL tournament, in which case his contract could be voided if he got injured.

In the car today I was thinking that this situation resembled other teams that were used to winning and then suddenly lose due to losing their heart and soul player for a season due to injury while still having their core intact. Often those teams end up drafting high and having success the following years.
You don't really see it much in the NHL, generally teams that flame out tend to spend a few years retooling and sitting at the bottom. However, not many teams in the history of the NHL have had a goalie who means as much to their team's success like Carey Price.
I am pretty much resigned to that now. In fact I am slightly excited about it. For too long I have wanted this club to tank for a season or two and have a chance to build around franchise players; it's the only way to get the kind of players you need. And I swear to god if they draft a big stay at home defenceman I quit. They are in a position to do what needs to be done to set themselves up for a decade, I just hope they don't anything drastic like make a push for the playoffs. Just keep losing and please... please... clean house at the end of the year Geoff.

Therrien said he wanted to conserve the energy of the Top 2 lines for the end of the game....that's why he rolled 4 lines until there were 5:00 left or less.... He gave TSN690's Mitch Gallo a stare-down for bringing it up....and said, "That's second guessing...."Francois Gagnon got the above response from him in French.... they're certainly having a good time with that response on 690.

If he'd waited until there were just a couple of seconds left, he would have conserved more energy for the top two lines. Did he say which two lines those were, btw? That's pretty much the type of answer I've come to expect from Therrien. Not really answering the question and deflecting any blame from himself.
