Not looking good for Petry and the Habs. Chariot signed 4.75 a yr for 4 years with the Wings. Grubandson signed with the Blue Jackets 4 mil a year 16 total and the canes traded for Burns. If Dallas signs Klingburg I am having a hard time finding a home for Jeff.

Yup.... even though Hughes seemed realistic in terms of expectations, it seems teams have preferred signing lesser D for nearly as much money rather than going for Petry.

Petry is averaging 6.2 million per season and in some of those signings, that's about 2 million more than someone like Gudbranson got, for example. Plus he is 34 years old.
Unless they retain $, it looks like its going to be a tough sell.

Lehkonen left money on the table, in my opinion. Mikheyev got 4 years at $4.75 per from Vancouver. However, I do not see it as a bad thing. Lehkonen likely places significant value in playing top six, often with MacKinnon.
Yeah, unfortunately, it looks like Montreal will be stuck with an unhappy camper for the foreseeable future.
Bergevin really handed out some brutal contracts in the summer of 2021. Hughes must be thinking to himself next summer cannot get here fast enough.

Perron joins Chiarot, Kubalik and Copp in Detroit. That aav and term seems a bit rich for Chiarot 4 x $4.75 (ouch). Busy day for Stevie Y.

Mikhail Sergachev signs an extension with Tampa Bay .. 8 yrs, 8.5 million AAV I'm sorry, WHAT?! Good to see TB make a mistake for once to balance out their tax advantage. Huge overpayment. Yeah, I'm not sure about that one and I like SErgachev. He's making more than Hedman and while I appreciate the CAP has gone up since Victor signed his deal, that's still a lot of money. Brisebois is paying him like an elite dman and that's a lot. I don't think he's in the Fox, Makar class and I'm not sure he'll get there despite his talent. I may be wrong as Brisebois thinks differently. Tampa locking in the young core before the aging stars fall off. Father Time always wins, though. Tampa wasn't drafting high, of course,, but the quality of their picks has fallen off. Even in 2015 when they picked Cirelli at #72, they had 3 picks before him and chose Mitchell Stephens, Matthew Spencer and Dennis Yan. Since then, Ross Colton at #118 in 2016 and not much else. Nolan Foote was traded away in the Coleman deal. Foote's not showing much but the 1st rounder they had to include has turned into Shakir Mukhmadullin, a 6'3" 194 lb dman who's progress has been pretty good. My point is that there isn't much in the pipeline to replace Killorn and Hedman and Stamkos when they start to fall off. If other GM's can avoid paying good money for a due date expired player, Tampa should end up spending quite a bit of time in purgatory. Too good to miss the playoffs, too bad to win anything. Well deserved, IMO. But we know how many dumb GM's there are out there, and dumb owners wanting their GM's to do dumb things. Hughes just has to take advantage of them first.

Pacioretty going to Carolina.
Weird move, I get that Vegas needed to free up cap room, but letting go of a high-end player usually isn't the solution.
And what's Carolina doing ?
I don't know the return yet, but maybe Vegas is starting a retool in the 5th year of their existence ?
EDIT: Wow, so it was Pacioretty for free.
I wish we'd have the kind of cap room to take him on for a season and sell him at the deadline. Carolina might well get a 1st out of this if their season goes sideways.

Last year McCrimmon had to give away Fleury and now it's Pacioretty sacrificed because their GM cant manage their cap.
Usually expansion teams are getting better by this point in their existence but under McCrimmon they are getting worse.
EDIT: I just read the post below by NWT. McPhee and McCrimmon should be fired. Bruce Cassidy must be wondering if there's an out clause on that new contract.

The second that the Habs got actually turned into Norlinder. They actually traded down to get him in the third and LeGuerrier in the fifth, but the latter was never signed. Bad asset management in any case, and they have a trend of dumping guys for nothing to get cap compliant.

Did little at Washington and had the good luck to be the beneficiary of that ridiculous expansion draft. Francis wasn’t so lucky this time around.

Good on Columbus. They've lost a lot of good players over the years. Finally someone chooses them for once.

If Pacioretty at 7 million had to be given away for nothing, plus a prospect; I think we can settle in and accept no one is beating down the door for Armia, Byron, Hoffman etc. I expect to see them on the ice for the foreseeable future barring buyouts

Tampa with three eight year deals today. Add Cirelli ($6.25) and Cernak ($5.2) to Sergachev What am I missing? These three players will be 25% if the cap

Is Gaudreau's wife from around there? I do not really understand, since apparently the Devils were definitely trying to get him. Columbus is way over the cap when those guys who finished the season LTIR come back online, not to mention the unsigned RFA Laine.
Pacioretty to Carolina is strange too. Does subtracting DeAngelo, Trochek, and Niederreiter (and quite possibly Necas) while adding old dudes like Burns and Pacioretty actually make them better?
Cloud, you are right. I am sure today and the weeks leading up to today have seen management gnashing their teeth as the realization that Bergevin left a ton of overpaid junk on the roster that no one around the league wants. Hockey is debatable, but I believe Montreal is a mortal lock to be among the worst 5-7 teams in the league.

I don't get Gaudreau to Columbus. He left a contending team with talented players - a team that offered him a max deal - for a group that is generally an also ran.
They have some nice pieces like Werenski and Laine but they aren't contenders. And Laine still has to be signed. I can't see him making enough of a difference there.

These three players will be 25% if the cap I suspect TB is planning on the cap going up, quickly. A lot of modern cap management is really pandemic predictions - a contract like Petry's wouldn't have been bad at all in a rising cap, but when Berg resigned players in the summer of 2020 he wasn't being given pandemic discounts, and clearly wasn't asking for them.

Hockey is debatable, but I believe Montreal is a mortal lock to be among the worst 5-7 teams in the league. Gallagher, Price, Armia, Hoffman and Petry, in addition to the expiring contracts of Byron and Drouin, pretty much guarantee we'll have a terrible year. Edmunston, Savard, Allen, Dvorak, Anderson are all ok contracts, Toffoli, Kulak and Chiarot were fine as well. But those longer term deals for underperformers are going to sting. The upside is they force a 2-3 year rebuild since you can't rebuild until those contracts are coming off the books. The downside is we should have cap room to generate assets. I'd have loved to take back Pacioretty to sell him at the deadline for a 1st and a prospect. Some of the guys signed today, like White or Strome, could be come assets if they get ice time. Let's keep in mind, guys like Kulak and Chiarot weren't anything special when we got them, but we got a 2nd and a 1st for them, so having the cap room and ice time would've been nice, if used properly.

Why would he then them down.

I think it's terrific that a UFA made a decision on where to play based on criteria involving enjoyment rather than win at all costs. Columbus may not make the playoffs, but they are much better than they were last year and who knows? They have a nice collection of kids coming, but not nearly enough. Centre and defense lacking enough quality. Erik Gudbranson....sheesh. They must have felt they were being pushed around and he'll help there, but the puck is going to be in their end a lot.

Bergevin made some good trades. Sergachev for Drouin was terrible.
If one were to exclude the summers of 2017 and 2021 from an analysis of Bergevin's tenure as GM, his body of work would be plenty decent. However, those two summers were incredibly bad.

Remember when Bergevin was so proud of using his CAP space to acquire Joel Armia? Carolina, using their CAP space, has acquired Teuvo Terevainen (Bryan Bickell), Seth Jarvis (Patrick Marleau) and Max Pacioretty.

Robert Thomas, Nick Suzuki and Josh Norris just signed essentially the same deal at the same age.
I always thought bridge deals had the massive advantage of players signing their 8 year deal a bit later, so that when it ended, they were clearly on the decline (see Subban, PK).
Anmd now I wonder, of those 3 guys, what happens when they are in their prime and those contracts end. Will teams be able to stop themselves from overpaying players in their prime who have been huge parts of teams for a decade ? I guess we'll see in 8 years.
I also find it interesting seeing how centers I thought we might get for Pacioretty are doing differently - Borgstrom and Sam Steel haven't amounted to much, Suzuki and Robert Thomas are living up to their potential.
