Being better than the alternatives doesn't necessarily mean that the only criteria you are judging one on is level of play.... factoring in others things like salary, age, health, length of contract, the cost of a player in a trade, etc... all these factors combined made Dunham a better fit for us. Again, I don't disagree Hackett has blown Dunham away this year... what I'm saying is that in recent years, Dunham has been the better goalie, not so far this year, but over the past 2, 3 seasons. There is no, nor was there ever, any disagreement there (about this year's play). Your points about Sv Pct are valid, to a degree... it is usually a better indicator than GAA of performance, definitely, but you must also factor in the quality of shots a goalie receives. Brodeur and Dunham might face the same number of shots in a game, but who do you think deals with more in-close shots, more break-aways and more second chance oppurtunities? (I'm obviously not saying Dunham is better than Brodeur - it's only 4.30, I'm not that drunk yet). The differences between Hackett and Dunham are negligable (that spelling just doesn't look right).... both good goalies who I'd have no problem playing on my team. But given the circumstances, I'd rather have Dunham over Hackett. Just an opinion though, like everything else... enjoyed the discussion, I have.

Best case scenario, some other team, preferably in the West, loses their #1 goalie and offers up a Philadelphia-Oates package for him (top prospect, first, second, third round picks), and Jose Theodore regains his form. Hackett leads his Western team to the Stanley Cup, where they meet Theodore and the Canadiens. In one of the most thrilling displays of hockey in the history of the universe, Montreal wins the cup in the 7th game, overtime, on a penalty shot goal scored by Ron Hainsey. Every game of the series went to overtime, and finished 1-0. Hackett and Theodore share Playoff MVP awards, hockey ratings go through the roof worldwide, the NHL expands to Winnipeg, Quebec, and Hamilton, the NHLPA and NHL reach a fair and equitable labour agreement, and seeing how smoothly those negotiations went, all warfare on the planet ceases to exist, as warring nations adopt the Goodenow-Betteman negotiating philosophy. Peace on Earth reigns. . Fell of my chair laughing. Do you always start drinking at 10.17 in th morning or is just a medication thing? LOL I suspect we will make him another "lost" Malhorta.

RR, take your point that you were looking at the overall "basket" of factors involved. It is tough to tell about the quality of shots faced though everyone on this board will tell you that the Habs tenders this year have faced a very high quality of shots. The Habs defensive play until the last two games has been thoroughly rotten and Hack and Theo have faced a lot of shots (the Habs being outshot by10-20 shots per game) and especially a lot of tough shots. Hackett routinely has been making great saves while Theo routinely not - until the last game at least. I have absolutely no feel for what Dunham has been facing in this regard although I doubt if it was any worse than Hackett. I do remember hearing good things about him last year so he may well bounce back with a change in scenery. If he were to have a .920 save % or close for the remainder of the season it obviously would do a lot for your team. I can see Sather's situation, not wanting to give up any more good young talent than he has to, and if there ever were any substantive discussions with the Habs he may have thought the asking price too high. The Habs have their own share of underachieving over paid vets in Audette and Czerkawski and, with Theodore performing so poorly, Savard's asking price probably was pretty high in good young talent. With Bure facing possibly two knee operations it will put even more of a stress on the Ranger's goaltending. We Habs fans know all about what injuries can do to a club. It's been fun, enjoyed the discussion too. Cheers.

RR....weren't the Rangers ''tapped out'' financially(you said the Rangers had no money left to spend last week)? how could they add Dunham's contract?
