Rumors are flying around on many boards about the availability of many of the Islanders players - Blake, Scatchard, Wiemar - are apparently all available. Likewise, Straka can be had for a song.
And, most teams are trying to cut payroll something awful. Soooo.
If those above 4 players can be had, what should we do about it?
My answer is, absolutely nothing. I can't see that we can get rid of any of the players who these guys would replace. Frankly, Savard put us in a VERY bad position these last two years, and it is going to take Gainey time to get us out of it.
Who is going to take Perrault from us for a draft pick when they can have any of those other guys? Yeah, right, goals. Straka can be a great player with the right lineup. I'm surprised that the Wings haven't tried to get him yet. He would be great there...
The only one who would really help us is Straka, but we don't have anyone to shoot the pucks for him. He is a playmaker, and he simply needs snipers. We don't have any, so why would we look to get him at his price. As someone already posted here, it would cost us nearly 2.5 million just to get Wiemar. Screw that. If this is what we have to do to get every one of these new players, then we are not going to get any of them. It is not cost effective management, which is something that Savard didn't understand.
Then there is the waiting game. Maybe Bob can actually trade for one of these guys once more salary has been paid. If we can wait until the mid-way point of the season, then it is not as big a problem to take on someones salary.
All of these guys would be upgrades. Key word that, Upgrades. We don't need upgrades. We need to release players first so we have space for the upgrades.
Bob is not scared to make deals. I think he will wait until UFA time to try and sign someone significant. He will let the role players come from within, and allow the "cast-offs" to make their way to Columbus and more likely Europe.
