The Catalans (barcelona region, more or less) are asking for the same thing in a new deal discussed with Spain.
I think that one should always be quite careful before calling the leader of a strong option insane.
That being said, why do that before independance? That's like accepting that Canada could work. But it won't. A useless move, it seems.

What a stellar D that would be: Desjardins, Gauthier, Breezer, Bergeron, Rivet, the Cube, Robidas, Dandy etc........

To answer your question in the subject line..... Yes. THF No. But he is consistent. In goal . . . hard to beat. On D . . . not so hard to beat. Up front . . . a couple of good lines. No medal.

Why is George "W" Bush wasting his time on issues like Iraq, Iran, Abortion, Homeland Security, International trade, and global warming, when he could be working on an Olympic hockey team for the "Republic of Texas?"
Canada doesn't seem to have many problems or election issues so why not a Schwartzenegger type special election to select Quebec players. Since Crosby played his Jr. hockey in Quebec would he be eligible for the Quebec team or does he have to be pure-laine? What about players from Ontario that have French names but don't speak French? What happens if Theodore chooses to play for Canada and Begin wants to play for Quebec? Oh, the debates!

Who puts these people into power? I do. Let's remember that "they" are as much in power as the NDP are. "They" have a policy and a dream. TROC may not agree with it, but at least they have a vision, unlike the Liberals (who merely want to stay in power) and the Conservatives (who want to be the ones in power). And on the other end of the country, a growing movement for Alberta separation -- a "we don't need you and besides what have you ever done for us?" mentality. But hasn't this thread run before in the non-hockey forum?

Does this not look like a sane man? I think this is a rather silly idea, and not at all something Duceppe should be concerned with.

Hey I'm of French descent, or at least my better half, though the cell division is proving problematic. Don't fear for Doucette making us look stupid, French intellectuals have almost single-handedly defined the western world (Jean Jaques Rousseau , Descartes et al) Too bad they were fundamentally wrong. the enlightenment didn't shed much light. So...do we get 10 treams and no Canada team? Maybe Inuvit will assume the Canada role. Some of my ancestors had to flee to th US for rebelling against English rule (including killing an English soldier) and one was married to one of the leaders of the 1837 rebellion. But they'd have played for Team Canada is suspect. When I look at what Quebecers agree to accept to be Canadian (Including running it almost uninterruptedly, thank God)I realize that the Canadian dream is in the end, not about fish, wheat oil and hydro, but about a higher principle, a broader vision. As Trudeau said, after Teilhard de Chardin the French Jesuit paleontologist and great cosmologist, "Everything that rises must converge." One Team Canada is of its nature of a higher principle as it overcomes what divides and makes distinct. It unifies. It transcends the insular. To break apart is easy. It's the second law of thrmodynamics. Holding it together is the challenge. I think Doucette, as did wonderful Rene Levesque speaks for a good, very good thing, perhaps the best thing in Canada, Quebec, but the Team Canada guys spoke of something greater still, not for size and strenght which is considerable, but for the grandness of the vision of unity. It is transcendent and a model for the world. I would love to see a team Quebec, but not at the price of a Team Canada. It's not just a better team, it's a grander vision.

Eventhough I really woudn't want something like that to happen..I don't know why but it doesn't seem that crazy to me? I know they are not a state and all but..it seems to work well in the UK with soccer. It would be easier to get used to if Quebec would do something like that than if it was Alberta or BC..cause Quebec is still a different nation. I have to admit it would be fun having another hockey team on the international scene.

Well, all of Quebec currently hold Canadian citizenships. So even if Canada was allowed to field a Team Canada and a Team Quebec there is no guarantee that the players would play for Quebec over Canada. (most will I am sure, it is their home afterall).
When this was first announced I thought it intriguing and said why not? We have always said Canada could field 2 teams and win 2 medals .... so this could be our proof.
When USSR broke up not everyone wanted to play for their "home countries" right away. Some would have killed to have the chance. But the thing I laughed at was the reporters asked "anglophones" their reaction to it (Ryan Smyth, Inginla). The one "francophone" I heard interviewed was Georges Laroque and he said it was a stupid idea. I know many of the players probably don't mix sports and politics but not many players spoke out in favour of the idea .... makes me wonder what exactly are the french players thoughts on it?

Debate his sanity all you want but it was intended to rile ROC. His would be in seventh heaven if someone like Cherry snapped back with some anti-Quebec comment.
Reality check, alomst all politicaians are scum.

In order to maintain the status quo with the declining birthrate in French Canada, the ROC has proportionally more votes than Quebec compared to the balance that existed in 1950. To rectify this situation we should give all quebec residents 2.1 votes vs 1.0 for every Ontario registered voter. The 2.1 votes would be increased to 2.7 votes for pure laine quebecois and decreased to 1.3 votes for new quebec immigrants. Anglos in quebec get 1.1 votes (more than ROC for putting up with language laws, but less than other Quebeckers). Electricity prices should be frozen from Newfoundland to quebec but can continue to rise from Quebec to the usa. The Montreal Canadiens get the first two draft picks each year from quebec (including immigrants to Rimouski) and the Nashville Predators get the first two picks from Tenessee. Alberta can maintain their oil revenues as of 1950 with the balance goint to the ROC. Because quebec has suffered for so long on oil prices, reparations should be made with all Atlantic oil royalties going to Quebec. Newfoundland gets to keep all the cod they can catch, but no more clubbing seals to restore the stocks.
California perspective on a sunny day. Good luck on your election campaign.

One of my friend happens to be mister Duceppe's son, so I happen to know the Bloc's leader a little more than what appears in the media. While you might find some or all of his ideas "insane", the guy himself is a dedicated, honest, hardworking, knowledgeable person, attributes we seldom find in todays politics and a refreshing proposition for many quebecers (49% of them voted for the Bloc in 2004 election, not all insane; by comparison the Parti Québécois received 33% of the votes in the 2003 provincial election.)
You might want to discredit my statement by labeling me a separatist (here we call them sovereignist) but I'm not (I wasn't part of these 49% and 33%). One should not underestimate the mistrust inspired by the Liberals actions in Quebec.
