A few questions Was O'byrne picked in the 3rd or 2nd round. From RDS I understand we got another 2nd rounder and picked him, but it doesnt show on NHL.com's draft report. Any idea why we drafted 2 similar players from the same team in the second round? I'm not sure, but it's pretty disapointing. We too O'Byrne in the third round, i'm not sure if we traded up to get him or if we took him at 79 though. 61. Montreal -- Maxim Lapierre, C 62. St. Louis -- David Backes, C 63. Colorado -- David Liffiton, D 64. Detroit -- Jim Howard, G 65. Buffalo -- Branislav Fabry, RW 66. Boston -- Masi Marjamaki, LW 67. Ottawa -- Igor Mirnov, C 68. Edmonton -- Jean-Francois Jacques, LW

Where is all the player movement today?

I don't see why so many people are passing up on Corey Locke. His size must not be the only problem with him, because with those point totals you would think he would go in the end of the 2nd at least in this draft.
Hopefully we can unlock Lapierre's sleeping talent as mentioned in a quote above, or that at least one of Urqhart or Lapierre pans out to be a decent second liner for us. Urqhart doesn't sound all that bad, but I still don't see the reason of drafting two similar players from the same team.

Let's just hope that Locke slides to our next pick ;D, but i doubt we'd take him anyways, obviously we have no interest in him or we'd have already gotten him instead of 43 point Maxim Lapierre or Junior "A" O'Byrne.

I started the Chris Dyment thread, I'm so proud of it, my greatest internet accomplishment to date. Sorry Yeti. I'll make sure I give you credit next time. Plenty of picks left, but not many quality players. Now is the time when our broken down drunks (scouts) earn their keep. We know all about the top prospects, but precious little about the guys still sitting and waiting and hoping.

I found a handful of trades on the ESPN trade tracker. Nothing special though...
Florida trades Ivan Majesky to Atlanta 2nd-round pick, 2003 Chicago trades Andrei Nikolishin to Colorado for Future considerations Colorado Trades Scott Parker to San Jose for a 20035th-round pick

After the first 3 rounds Corey Locke has yet to be picked. I wouldn't mind taking him with Nashvilles 4th rounder we got for Petrov if hes still there tomorrow, would make the draft more bareable (at least the 2nd round).

After 101 picks, Nathan Paetsch and Corey Locke are still around. We have 109 and 113, there is definitely a chance we could grab at least one of these guys.

Well so far we've done decent, i'd give the team a B, Kastsitsyn was a great pick, and took a risk to take him, but should pay dividends. Where as the rest of the picks i'm not very impressed with, Urquhart looks good, but he should at 40th, and we could have had O Sullivan who looks a lot better. Bob should make a trade to get my mind off of this whole O'Sullivan thing.
Impossible to rate the draft the same day it took place, but i'm just speculating on how well i think it's went at this point... You can never predict how a prospect is going to turn out for sure, i just think O'Sullivan and Locke will be better than Urquhart and Lapierre.

so as I gather Lockster and Paetschster are still available? would be nice to snatch one if not both tomorrow. I'd give the grade Matt gave...a B..although picking up O'Sullivan would have pushed that to an A

I'm giving a B aswell... I love the Kasty pick... Urkle is solid, would of preffered taking either O'sullivan or Fritsche instead... O'brien I have no complaint with.
Lapierre on the other hand seems like a bit of a gamble with not much in the way of upside.

Grades? Based on what? Just as well give grades on the fashion taste of the picks. I guess Kastsitsyn wouldn't score well with the pink shirt, huh?
I like the fact we were able to get K, but I have no idea how good the other guys were in relation to their peers and, more importantly, how they will be like at the NHL level. I'm annoyed that there were sufficient numbers of foolish NHL GM's that they allowed Parise to fall far enough that NJ was able to snag him. Those GM's had to be picking according to need, not BPA. Reminds me of the year NJ got Petr Sykora, who was rated much higher but was too small.

(?)18 + 4 = 22 (+/- 2) = NHL(!)
That's why the scouts get the cold hotdogs and flat beer.
***
1 universally proclaimed potential star. 1 offensively gifted prospect, who was ranked #55 mid-term, but rose to #32 NA final ranking by CSB. 1 solid two-way player, final #23 NA CSB ranking. 1 potentially 7' 280lb d-man, ranked as a sleeper pick by Red Line.
Not a bad day's shopping.

Not a bad day's shopping. I agree. You have to figure that AS and TT have indicated that they spend a lot of time watching the Q prospects, so there must be something there that they like. They still abide by their three main factors when drafting....skating speed, hockey sense and strength of character. Until 5 years in the future proves differently, we did just fine. As for the big D'man, the Nanaimo website shows him as an offensive defenceman...at 6'5"...holy cow!! As a result of today, the Habs are now bigger and faster, not a bad day at the office. The funniest thing today is the Bo was pretty involved for someone who doesn't take office until July 1st. I also like the chance that we can potentially get a Locke or Paetch with our first 4 rounder tomorrow morning.

I agree. You have to figure that AS and TT have indicated that they spend a lot of time watching the Q prospects, so there must be something there that they like. For starters, it's an easy drive, they know the restaurants, they can be home in time to watch CSI, and finally they don't have to put up with Air Canada. Lots of good reasons to focus on the Q.

I like the Kasty pick. I'd gladly trade Urquart, Lapierre, and Conan O'Bryne for Bernier. Four AHL'ers for an NHL'er.

The way we are drafting this year, AS has already decide on his picks and I don't think any of them will be obvious choices. Both 2nd rounders were rated as 3rd/4th rounders by both THN and SI. We are certainly taking a lot of chances IMO. I just hope AS nows what he's doing.

AS and TT are going against the grain a lot with the first four picks, but they may be on to something. One guy rated by Red Line as the best overall talent in the draft, a huge Red Line sleeper pick who was in an obscure Junior A team to be eligible for Cornell where he will play next season, a guy whose stock was moving up big time since Mid-season, and another good skating two way guy that was ranked #23 NA skaters by CSS. The last two were playing in our own building, so they must have been well scouted. Both AS and TT have a reputation of finding those gems that others pass up on, so only time will tell if they have done it yet again...we all hope so!!

The draft started 9:00 Nashville time, 10:00 for most of us, so it's only been on for 10-15 minutes. I hope we make some personal moves today. Marc, you may want to try the fan590.com and listen to their live feed. They may cover the draft. Mind you, you have to put up with Howard Berger
