First five picks, eh? Sheesh. I’d be amazed if anybody gets more than two… Having said that…
10th: Jeff Carter (C). My heart says Kastitsyin, my head says Carter. Despite his reputation for drafting elite skill guys, Savard has actually drafted pretty good two-way forwards. Higgins, of course. But Perezhoughin is a regular penalty killer now, Milroy was always seen as a two-way guy, and Plekanec was deemed “responsible in his own end.” I don’t know about Carter’s upside, but he seems like a safe pick, and with Gainey strongly hinting that he wants character guys, I think Carter will be our choice. Him and Higgins should battle it out for 2nd/3rd line center position. [ I have a feeling BC may be right. I have no reason for thinking this, but I get a feeling that Suter, Phaneuf, and Coburn will all be gone be #10, and that the Habs will pass on Parise, Brown, and Getzlaf and go with Jeff Carter, who projects as a big, solid, 2-way centre with decent upside. Probably a safer pick than Parise. His offensive ceiling may not be as high, but if Parise does not become a decent goal scorer, then a player of his size loses a ton of value. If Carter fills out a bit more and plays with the intensity he supposedly has, then you are looking at a very solid #2 centre. I can see Gainey liking this kid.

Of course, they said the exact same thing about Chad Kilger when he went 4th overall to Anaheim in '95. In fact, watching the draft replay on the NHL Network earlier this week, they said he was "Ron Francis, but bigger and stronger" and that he was a lock. Whoops! Size != Everything

You're absolutely right. We just don't know.
Parise has obvious skills and great hockey sense, which I think is even more important. I don't know how Carter compares. Kilger plays like a guy without any feel or instinct for the game - hard to believe he went that high.
All I know is this draft, as all of them, will be scored as much on how everyone drafted AFTER #10 pans out as much for how well the Habs' pick performs.

I think that trading up would be a mistake. At 10th pick there will definitely be several highly desireable players left. There doesn't seem to be a clearcut #1 pick, so I'd rather not sacrifice young assets on such a gamble. Here are picks I'd like to see. (10) Kastsitsyn - I like the idea of gambling on him. If he's not around, I'd be happy with any of the following, if they're available: Coburn (wishful thinking), Phaneuf, Jessiman. I don't know enough about later ranked players to pick the rest. There was one player, that sparked my interest, in Kyle Woodlief's second chat transcript, however: Kyle Woodlief: "Matt Nickerson is the biggest (6-5/223), meanest, nastiest S.O.B. in this year's draft. He will be the most sought after "enforcer" type in this year's lottery. At Red Line, we think that means he won't be around by the end of the third round." proxy.espn.go.com/chat/chatESPN?event_id=3664An Uber-goon for ya, HA... Uber-goon! I'd love to see the Habs snap him up, if he's there, at (61), or (79).

I thought Kilger was Jason Arnott 2 when they drafted him? They mentioned his similarities to Arnott as well.... good memory!

Its all a crap shoot no matter how you look at its o I'll go with Kastitsyn or Dustin Brown if either are left at #10.After that your really just throwing out names.I 'm just hoping that this draft will be the one to really add some solid depth for years to come.Lets hope the Habs hit a few home runs. 10th- Parise (Safe pick) 40th- Filewich (A steal at this point) 61st- Stehlik (Linhart part 2) 79th- Locke (He is projected to go between 70th-90th, so why not) 109th- Bolduc (The classic Marc-Andre Thinel, we've taken 2 anglos, a czech and an american, so we'll appease the zealots pick)
Habs fans everywhere moan about the lack of size taken in this draft...

Not only is this draft deep, but it is filled with BIG BIG!! guys. The Hab's are not filled with Big guys. Do the math.
Size isn't everything (see Anna Nicole Smith) but with so much available we can get both skill and size.
My expectations are 1. Kastitsyn and if not Bernier. (don't care if he is 28th on some mock drafts)

FIVE people guessed, err, I mean scouted and selected the right prospects.
Since all Spiro can afford for the prize is ONE bottle of beer, you all need to share that bounty. As for the title of "Scout", weeellll, me thinks that the HAb's will not be offering any contracts any time soon.
By the way, why did so many of you sellect Locke?

I liked Parise, he went to NJ. I liked Vrana, he went to NJ. I liked Locke, because of his skill (and I hope he proves to be a player) - I think I was the first to mention him in this thread...
I'm happy my first two picks went to NJ, they're usually a pretty decent judge of talent and if they agree with me, all the better.
Still happy with Montreal's draft performance though, don't get me wrong. I think it was much better than usual.

First five picks, eh? Sheesh. I’d be amazed if anybody gets more than two… Having said that…
10th: Jeff Carter (C). My heart says Kastitsyin, my head says Carter. Him and Higgins should battle it out for 2nd/3rd line center position. Do I get half points for wearing my heart on my sleeve? How about for picking Katstitsyin in the top 10 mock draft? 40th: Marc-Andre Bernier (C). I think Savard will be thrilled if he is still around at 40, and will snap him up in a heartbeat. Might even trade up a few spots to get him. Do I get half points for suggesting a center from the Quebec league? That's what we took after all? 61st: Matt Smaby (D). Hasn’t quite worked out with Tomas Linhart yet, so they try again. A defensive defenseman, with good character, though not much offense. I think Montreal would prefer Bruno Gervais, but I don’t think he will last this long. He went right after Urquhart, 41st overall. That's gotta be worth something, no? And wasn't I right when I suggested they would be taking a big defenseman? Wasn't I? Huh? HUH?? 79th:Ivan Khomutov (C): Wild card Russian, Savard takes a flier on a guy whose stock has plummeted this year. Well, its another center. I had us picking Kat, two centers and a defenseman. We did pick Kat, two centers and a defenseman. That's close enough, isn't it? Why don't you love me? 109th: David Tremblay (G): I think our goaltending prospect depth is a little weak, and it will be nice to stock up on some guys for when Theodore/Garon leave/fade in 5-7 years. Right now, all we have is Michaud and Puurula. Puurla had a good year, but Michaud had a disappointing one, is kind of small, and there may have been a reason why he was never drafted in the first place. I wouldn’t be wasting a pick on a goalie in the first couple of rounds, but considering this is a strong year for skaters, and a weak year for goaltenders, some of the “better” guys might still be available in the 4th or 5th round. So I’d grab one, just for fun. They grabbed TWO just for fun! What a bunch of wild and crazy guys they are!
