No thread on this yet, and it might not be too long, but isn't it great to see the Spokane Chiefs, with their Habs unis. It's hard to miss big #2 on defense, Jared Cowan, who should be a top pick in 2009. Lots of composure, pretty good skater and rather tall. It was a pretty good game today, Spokane over Kitchener 2-1. Weber is hurting and isn't playing as many minutes as he otherwise would.

Thanks for the thread and the update(s) -- no time to watch anything today (and I hate Pittsburgh too).
Saw the Kitchener/Gatineau OT -- I'm pulling for the Piques but who knows?
CHL is indeed fun hockey to watch.

A few other teams have or currently use jersey styles and colours similar to our beloved bleu-blanc-rouge. A few across a whole bunch of leagues include the old Junior de Montreal, St Cloud State (Mankato, Minn), Toronto Junior Canadiens (Junior A), and Welland Junior Canadiens (Junior B). The Hamilton Bulldogs did ever so briefly in between their Oiler colours and their current modified red, white and blue designs that have Hab colours, but entirely different designs that are uniquely Bulldogs. The Toronto team just changed its name and colours from last year and it is shocking that they went with a team with Canadiens in it. I would be totally floored if a team in Greater Montreal was ever called the Junior Maple Leafs.

i love when the chiefs come visit the giants just because of the jerseys, even though the last 3 visits were in the 2nd round of the playoffs and they stifled the crap outta my team.
after watching gatineau and kitchener i had to think that the chiefs are the team to beat at the memcup.
although like last season it's pretty tough to beat the hometown team in their own building in a one game series.
as usual i'm pulling for the dub and the Q. the robotic-like systems of the ohl always bore me.
cowen is impressive size wise for sure, he'll be impressive next year!
edit: PS i just bought memcup.ca looking at making a site on memcup history/stats etc...

He made a few high panic threshhold plays in today's game. He put a couple of dekes on a forechecker coming at him to get by and move the puck to a forward, and on another play, made a soft pass behind the icing line to a forward between the circles instead of up the boards, which had been taken away by the Rangers. Both very smart, cool plays.

Speaking of uniforms I can't stand those Belleville ones they were wearing yesterday - the mustard color jerseys with the bright red bull on it - ugh.

Both very smart, cool plays. when i first saw him i texted my contact and asked if he was a 19 or 20 year old, when he wrote me back his age i couldn't not be extremely impressed. the whl is churning out great hockey players especially at defense. and they all learn how to deal with, and play well in, a gritty game.

They have been calling Cowen as the top Dman of his draft, and he did nothing this year to disappoint IMO. Spokane are a fun team to watch, great team speed and really solid D.

With Spokane's win over Gatineau, that means our two Memorial Cup prospects go head to head twice more before the end of the season to add to their seven playoff matchups aleady (and quite recently!!).
Belleville (Subban) and Kitchener (Weber) face tomorrow night in the last round robin game and then meet again on Friday in the semi for the chance to advance to the final against Spokane.
Two more chances to see both our prospects play in the same game!! One will be playing in the final on Sunday.

tell you what, pk subban is one of the most impressive talents in junior hockey today.
wow top flight nhl skater, and 100mph blast from the point. good passing too. once he learns how to take care of home, wow!

Nothing on the line except the last line change on Friday night, but these two teams played their hearts out in an absolute thriller tonight.
3-0 first period lead by Kitchener wiped out with a 4-3 OT win by Belleville.
Subban with one goal and one assist (both really nice by the way) and Weber with a goal with a big blast from the point on the PP. Good game for Subban and good to see Weber recovering nicely from that ankle injury, as he seems to be skating better and getting stronger.

one thing PK ain't learnin' in belleville is defensive play, they were bad in their own end, if you can keep the puck away from them they have a tough time getting it back. spokane is a very good posession team. should be a good final with the home crowd cheering them on kitchener may be tough, but i still think the chiefs win in the end.

spokane wraps it up with an easy 4-1 win in kitchener's house. i won't bring up who i said would win it. this team is the best i've seen in some areas of the game, great win for the dub for back to back titles! last 20 mem cups whl won 11 qmjhl won 4 ohl won 5

Did you see the game, h&c? It was far from an "easy" win. The Rangers got 54 shots....25 in the third period...many from in-close.
If not for Tokarski (who played like Biron vs. Montreal) it could have been tied easily, as the 4th goal was into an empty net.
Spokane is quite the team though, you're right. A machine....extremely disciplined and positionally sound. Sacrificing their bodies to block shots, etc.
But they did show signs of breaking down in the third...and needed their goalie big time. The Rangers had a phenomenal season as well....record-setting for them.

didn't watch it CH and did see the shot totals, i wish i could have but a 1pm start in vancouver when the beach is hopping with scantily clad women was calling my name much louder. cursing for not having a pvr though, and was surprised they didn't replay it later that evening on the west coast.
spokane are opportunists and seemed to do the same thing to the giants, they don't need a lot of shots to get 3-4 goals.

I've seen the first 2 periods (Yay, PVR's). In those 2, Spokane was pretty much in control. There weren't a lot of good scoring chances for Kitchener 5 on 5. A few more on the PP, but even then, I never felt the game was at risk for Spokane (It was just 2-1 until the 3rd, right?) I still have to watch the 3rd and maybe I'll change my opinion then. Wonder if the Spokane coach speaks French? He had his team playing extremely well positionally and in a disciplined way. That Cowan is terrific and #15, whoever he was, is also a skilled, large d-man.
