Maxim Lapierre : How did this guy only manage 22 goals and 21 assists during the regular season and get hyped as much? How is he ranked so high by all scouting organizations? I don’t understand and I would like to see more of what Lapierre is capable of. It’s not that Lapierre looked bad when I saw him, it’s just that I don’t see why he is ranked ahead of many players such as his teamate Cory Urquhart or L-P martin from Baie-Comeau who had a much better season and a good showing in the playoff.
He has all the skills to succeed but he can’t be a dominant player? I’m not sure on this, but he looks like an underachiever to me. Maybe he had an unlucky year or something like that, but I don’t care if he was a rookie, with the set of skills he has, he should be able to produce a lot more.
Skill wise Lapierre offers a lot. Every aspects of his skating are very strong and his maximum speed can be really surprising. He also uses his skating/speed/quickness nicely in game situation especially on the forechek. From what I saw he is a better skater than Urquhart, but his less talented and creative. But Lapierre’s set of hands is not too shabby either. He is capable of nice quick moves and he is decent while handling the puck. I also remember both of his slap and wrist shot to be fairly hard. Finally, his intensity level also seamed pretty high on almost every shift I saw him.
Lapierre’s downsides are the following : lack of physical play and solidity on his skates, incapacity to score on a regular basis and average vision/ passing skills. He also never really played defensively when I saw him (once here and at the Top Prospect Game) and he didn’t always finish his checks.
Lapiere’s future is a complete guess and he could turn out to be one of those later bloomer that makes every fans wonder, “why didn’t my team pick him instead of..? On the other hand, he could be a reel underachiever that has no more upside than an average AHL player. Is he worth the risk? Well he is raw and he needs to put all the pieces together but his skills are undeniable and his skating is quite strong so why not. I just think there is going to be a lot of players with more potential than him available in the second round.
