Someone slap me -- I actually read the blog. "60% chance that Emery will be moved"? And four teams are interested? Someone slap Eklund! Murray has already shopped Emery around the league a couple of times, with no takers. He has outright said that Emery will be bought out on the tick of the clock. I can just hear it now from Eklund: I said Emery wouldn't be with the Sens next year and I was right. Duh.

it'd be insanity to go after him with our heads down into a bidding war. Leave that to the other teams. Agree. Totally. But we are being narrow here: would you trade? Answer yes. The question we aren't really avoiding: how much? Answer: not as much as it would (in all likely hood) take. But it's the end of June . . .we're allowed to dram. ;D Remember though that Gainey was ready to part with multiple young players (including names like Higgins, Halak, O'Byrne, Lapierre and either of the Kosts brother) for the playoff rental of Sundin and Hossa... I would immagine he'd fish pretty deep in his depth chart for a young franchise player like Malkin.

As much as I like many of our guys, we don't have the aforementioned

Malkin in a heartbeat I give up anyone on the roster but Price, anyone else is fair game.
I like Malkin's game more than that other guy in Pittsburgh, what's his name um... oh it will come to me sometime soon..

You call Hal Gill a defenseman? More like a pylon in skates.

slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/NHL/Draft/2008/06/19/5923271-sun.htmlLooks like the Pens are trying to move Malkin for sure ... For the right package I'm interested of course, but I'm not prepared to deplete the team for one player. We showed last year that we're not offensively challenged. We've got a good mix. We should look to augment where it makes sense. I'm not sure moving the players we'd have to move to get Malkin makes sense.

(that puts him 6 notches above anybody the Hab's have) Young, talented, hard worker, speedy, hard shot, accurate, smart, physical, size, proven; not much to dislike?

We just can't put up the kind of players we'd have to to get Malkin. Without turning into Maple Leafs East. However, if there's a specific combination that they're interested in - I said earlier I think Plekanec/Higgins/one of O'Byrne, Gorges or Valentenko/1st round pick this year/1st round pick 2009 - well I could see doing that. Malkin is a big upgrade on Plekanec (sorry Tomas) and would probably be very scary on a line with Kovalev/Kostitsyn the Elder (three very fast guys that are very good with the puck, two of whom are pretty good playmakers (Malkin and Kovalev) and who, are probably all in the top five in wrist-shots in the NHL. Higgins is replaced by a UFA (or maybe we replace him with *gasp* Ryder - our other top line becomes Koivu/Kostitsyn the Younger/Ryder), the young defneseman is replaced by one of our other young defensemen (because we have quite a few) and our first - well, it sucks that we lose them, but Timmins is good at getting value in later rounds. Our powerplay is elevated to a whole new level of scary. And we might, just might, win the President's Trophy next year.

It's sound logic TNG. A bidding war is a bad idea, and if Gainey is true to form he'll make an offer he deems fair and stick to it. He wouldn't up the ante at the last minute for Hossa, and he won't get played if he's in the running for Malkin.

I don't remember reading anything that indicated Gainey was willing to give up either Kostitsyn brother at the deadline for either Sundin or Hossa. Not that they'd be off the table in a Malkin deal, I just don't remember that being considered. Frankly, I'm not sure Pittsburgh would be interested in Andrei, since they'd be replacing an expensive player with another player who looks like he'll be an expensive player. Sergei on the other hand, with 2 more years with a tiny cap hit, is likely very appealing.

Yes, it's not necessarily the quality of the players you're giving up, it's the quality and cost of the players you're giving up. Lower contracts are valuable. That's why a guy like Valentenko, O'Byrne or Emelin are really attractive to a team like Pittsburgh. Young, cheap, talented and in an area of weakness. Let's not forget, though, they'd have to beat out Hal Gill.
