Could be all about getting assets to make trades too.

I'm not sure what to make of this...
#6 would be fairly costly...Columbus would most certainly be looking to get NHL ready player(s) in return. Shenn will likely still be on the board, but is he the guy we trade that far up to get? Colin Wilson would certainly fill an organizational need.
#19 is, IMO more likely...i could see the Habs coveting guys like Pickard and Deschamps. Both are, IMO likely to go after 19 but before 25. If this pick could be had for our #25 and change, then go for it...

a good chance they've identified what they think is a potential off the charts home run type pick. i think they're going to swing for the fences a bit in this draft. tyler meyers is that kind of huge risk/reward player.

Could be all about getting assets to make trades too. I thought of this too ... but there really isn't anyone available, even at #6, that will get us that top tier guy we've been missing. We'd be giving up a MaxPac in return for #19 ... or McDonnagh for #6 ... for instance.... then flipping the pick (who will probably be Schenn, or Wilson) for Marleau? (or someone like that) Possible, yes .... but somehow it doesn't fit Gainey's MO. (But I'd like to see it, if the return was a top tier guy)

If they wanted the 6th spot I would *guess* that it would be for Filatov, and I would also *guess* that they have a pretty good plan for filling that #1/2 center spot. Hypothetically, Plekanec and our first (plus a throw in?) for the 6th overall, assuming Filatov is available. Then either trade for Jokinen, or sign Sundin... Giving up Plekanec without knowing whether you could replace him would be dangerous, very dangerous, but if they were very confident that they could get a Sundin or Jokinen moving up to snare the potential superstar Filatov would be a very bold move indeed... All hypothetical of course.

I don't really agree. A 6'7" monster that can skate is a good thing. Too bad too many GMs won't trade a 6th and a 19th for a 25th. I can do math and it works for me (hehe) , but the Habs will have to give up a ton more for that. I just don't see him worth vaulting into the top ten for...I think they must be targetting a guy like Bailey or Filatov to be perfectly honest. To me this would only be about the 6th pick at which point Cuma should not even be in the mix. We are either talking about one of the stud defenders or else Filatov who would look really good in the bleu-blanc-rouge. One of the four stud defenders - Bogosian, Doughty, Pietrangelo, Schenn (when we are already firming that position up) would not really be worth the big time cost of moving up and getting those two picks. I honestly think that Karlsson, Tuebert, Sbisa and Carlson (USHL) all stand a chance of being top 15 too. This is a stud D class for sure. I don't see if working unless we throw in a ton of prospects or roster players. Not really Saint Bo' style so far...although who knows if the deal is right.

All hypothetical of course. Interesting plot but isn't Filatov kinda of a softish, smallish, one-dimensional forward? Seem to ooze with talent, no question there, but doesn't necessarily strike me as a Timmins/Gainey kind of pick... Samsonov take 2 ? As you often mention, how many European did we pick in the first round since Bob took over? ...on the other hand Colin Wilson is an NCAA grown center with good size, strong 2-way instinct and top notch work ethic. Timmins has to be drooling over the guy... I would definitely not peg him a franchise level player but he appears, paper wise, like a solid top 2 center in the making.

Filatov huh? .... we'd need to surround him with something (as you said) or we'd be even softer.

There's no way we can get to #6 short of trading Price, or Markov, or some other highly talented NHL-ready player.
I like Plekanec, but he doesn't get you from 25 to 6.
As for Myers, I have a hard time evaluating him, because he's a physical monster that's dominating smaller competitors. There have been a long string of physical monsters that come out of junior/NCAA/USHL and find themselves unable to continue that domination in the NHL. Hugh Jessiman comes to mind. They never went through physical adversity until that level, and at that point I think it might be too late to learn from it. My two cents, is all.

Dumb move, the quality of a player picked at 6 instead of 25 is not worth a roster player in this draft.

Without getting into specifics of what in particular the Habs need, my take on this draft is that there's an obvious 1st choice, and then some top quality d-men and Filatov through to pick 6 or 7 (depending on where you peg Schenn) and then, while still good, the quality drops off a fair bit. So, aiming for a #6 pick puts you in that 2nd tier, which would be miles better than #25. Giving up a roster player is what's needed to get you in the game. It really helps if you have a lot of strength in one position and you can afford to have less depth there, but really pick up the quality in another area where you are weaker. Defense prospects and right wingers abound in Habland. We can afford to give up players in those positions.

right wingers abound in Habland. Kovalev, A. Kositsyn ... then nothing ... nothing that gets you a #6 pick for sure

right wingers abound in Habland. Kovalev, A. Kositsyn ... then nothing ... nothing that gets you a #6 pick for sure I believe AK is pretty near enough to get you #6 in this year's draft. Considering you won't likely draft anything amazing at that spot this year, you likely will get a player with Kosts kind of upsides but who, contrary to Kosts, hasn't yet matured into an NHLer. Maybe add a second round pick to sweeten the pot or a prospect/project... but not more than that IMO. That being said, looking at what Bob tried to do at the deadline last year, I'd be completely floored if he now trades a roster player for a pick at this point. Unless he would be thinking of flipping that high pick right away in a trade to improve his team... I mean can you imagine what the perception would be if all Gainey comes up with during the summer is trading a 30 goals player for a pick... Almost unthinkable... Would be like trading your veteran starter for a pick in 2 years, in order to play an unproven rookie, right at the doorstep of the playoffs when you're in a position to go real deep... It never happens...

Depends, I guess, what kind of faith you have in the veteran starter or in the 30 goal scorer. For example [sorry, Skilly and everyone else] what would we have thought last year if Bob had traded Mr. Ryder for a draft pick?

S Kostitsyn, Latendresse....all scoring right wingers. Yep. That's my main argument for not trading Higgins, since he's our only natural left winger (and Steve Begin). We have top-6 right wingers coming out the wazoo. If we add Hossa (or Gaborik, as Pierre McGuire mentioned we might be in pursuit of) that just adds to the logjam.

Gaborik was playing left wing, no? as was Latendresse and S. Kostitsyn primarily .. natural right wingers or not, they were used on the left.
