As reported on RDS.ca, the Habs signed 19 year old Swiss goalie Robert Mayer to a three year deal. Mayer went undrafted this year, somewhat surprisingly. He is the top goalie for the Swiss national junior team, although he was born in the Czech Republic.
Good move to add some goaltending depth. Mayer will be playing for Saint John in the Q this season, so one more CHL prospect!!

Poor fella got a break from doing nothing but practice at camp to go play a game down the road in Verdun with his junior team. Bad result though, giving up five on 23 shots in 2 periods for the loss. He does not turn 19 until early October so he is still very young and likely wished he was up the road catching the game in the Bell Centre watching countryman Weber pot his first in that lovely jersey!

I was at the game. There was only 1 goal that could be considered weak. The shot beat him 5-hole. He didn't squeeze the pads shut enough and just squeaked over the line. The other 4 were either crease crashers, breakaways, or giveaways from the d. Montreal seems to have a pretty decent team (now that the NHL cuts are starting to return).

I have not had a chance to catch Mayer live yet...someday. Not even sure if I saw him on TV at last year's WJC, although his team was quite weak and had a pretty bad tourney overall. Hope he has a good year down in Saint John. There still are a few junior missmatches as some teams hold onto their juniors much longer than others. Heading off to Red Deer to catch the Rebels tonight. What a great junior barn!

I have not had a chance to catch Mayer live yet...someday. Well, if you ever do, grab it. I had the great fortune of catching him live at the ACC in April of '07 and his performance of "Gravity" was simply mesmerizing. A wonderful talent, to say the least!

I hope this isn't what you had in mind!!! Why, if it isn't Skilly's mom and aunt. Hey you are the one always bragging about being with my mom .... but what frightens me is that you can't tell her apart from dad in drag!! I was wondering why mom was crooked as sin for the past year, and dad always had a smile on his face. ;D

Robert Mayer had a rough start to the season losing 4 of 5 games but has now 8 wins with 6 loses improving his GAA to 2.51 with a .912 save percentage; ranking him 5th in the QMJHL. Ironically the guy leading the QMJHL is the man Mayer beat out for a Montreal contract. Nicola Riopel has won 13 games with only one lose and a 1.41GAA with a .950 save percentage. Perhaps they will invite him back next year as the Habs could use more depth if just Desjardins and Mayer are signed (not counting Price/Halak)
