Trading teams must have the cap space available to make a trade Is that so or can you go over the cap to make the trade and then fit it back along the way... ? Say can a GM be over at some point and then low enough at other points to make it fit under the cap on a yearly basis? I think that only applies when you are replacing a player who was injured ... not with trades.

You can go over the cap to replace a player using an LTIR exeption, in which case the amount over the cap doesn't count -- so you're never really over. For any transaction, you have to be at or under the cap for both this season, and all future seasons the transaction effects. For the purposes of future seasons, the cap is assumed to be the same as it currently is.

Caught Ron Fournier on CKAC today and he had some interesting tidbits to share. According to his sources, the Lightning would no longer be deadset against trading Lecavalier. Not to say that Vinny is on the block but according to Ron if Vinny wanted out, they'd be happy to accomodate him at this point.
Still according to Ron, Gainey and his counterpart in Tampa would already have the sketch of a deal designed to bring #4 in Montreal.
And apparently Vinny's wife is quite homesick and would love to come back to Quebec.
VoilĂ !

As an old rock and roll DJ, I have to get in the act here, Dream'in, I'm always dream'in. Johnny Burnette.
Well dreams can come true. If Vinny wants to play for the Habs one day and the Habs brass knows this, I am sure mountains will be moved to accommodate this.

I was going to slag you for being old for quoting but then . . . "Dreamin' - dreamin' will see me through you better believe that I'm dreaming you into my life." - Cliff Richard sure he was "making a comeback" [well, continuing it, after Wired for Sound] but . . . he's got a "5th Anniversary CD out for goodness sake!!! What's next? I have a dream, a song to sing To help me cope with anything If you see the wonder of a fairy tale . . . [shudders]

...sorry for sidetracking this thread back on Lecavalier but I just wanted to outline that he does not have an NTC until July 2009... ...back to our regular programming I was just about to post that, good catch Doc. I may be mistaken, but I think it's a no-movement clause. If Gainey were to go get Vinny at any point, it's best to do it before his new contract kicks in with the no-movement clause, partly because it would mean that Vinny couldn't nix the trade, although if he wouldn't want to come to Montreal I don't think it would be a good idea to go out and get him, but because then the Habs would have to option as to whether to honour his NMC or forget about it (some weird NHL CBA thing where if you acquire a player before their NMC/NTC goes into effect, you don't have to choose to honour it if you don't want to. I can find it if anyone wants, I don't think I'm mistaken), thus, if he's 39 and sucking late in his contract, the front office can have a talk and ask him to retire or put him on waivers/send him down. The cap hit is good, the player is very good if he wants to be here, the length still worries me but, if he doesn't have that NMC, the length wouldn't worry me as much if the Habs continue to bring in revenue like I assume they are.

I thought "the dream" ended when Vinny chose to sign long term with TBay [sorry, Doc]. Is there someone else to put on the wish list, or do we continue with the Prince until he is indeed 39 and wants to end his career here?

understandable, Doc . . . and appreciated.
I just don't know where I stand on this any more. He had his chance and said "nope" which I think is good: how about that . . . someone not being mercenary [though that only holds true when mercenaries are not Montreal-bound!]. otoh, I think "he had his chance . . . why should I keep holding out hope?".
Conflicted, am I.

He had his chance and said "nope" I think "he had his chance . . . why should I keep holding out hope?". Pretty much my sentiment. He didn't want it when he coulda/shoulda had it. I want players (even elite ones) that WANT to play for the Canadiens. I'd shop elsewhere; just like he did. I know this is totally unrelated to trading for Lecavalier, but the first thing that comes to mind when I think of his 85 million contract and the financial status of the Lightning, as rumored, is Mario and Pittsburgh part two.
That being said I think it is a long shot for this to happen, but I like the odds of bankruptcy and Lecavalier as new owner of Lightning more than that of the Canadiens acquiring him.
