Too bad there are panelists who are this much out of touch or it could be that their ratings must be down or something. Either way the comments are inexcusable. More so when you think we're over there supporting their operation. =============================================================================== Fox News mocks Canadian militaryOutrage after panel rips war effort By KATHLEEN HARRIS and ALTHIA RAJ, NATIONAL BUREAU OTTAWA [/b]-- As Canadians mourn the loss of four more fallen soldiers in Afghanistan, a videotaped segment of an American TV talk show where panelists mock Canadian soldiers as slackers is making the rounds on the Internet. The five-minute segment, which aired recently on Fox News late-night program Red Eye with Greg Gutfeld and later posted on YouTube.com, features American panelists suggesting Canadian soldiers need time off for “manicures and pedicures.” The item aired after Gen. Andrew Leslie, the Canadian Forces Chief of Land Staff, told a Senate committee the military would need a one-year break from operations after the mission in Afghanistan winds down in 2011. “The Canadian military wants to take a breather to do some yoga, paint landscapes, run on the beach in gorgeous white capri pants,” Gutfeld said with a sneer. Another panelist Doug Benson said he was unaware Canadian troops were on the ground in Afghanistan. “I didn’t even know they were in the war. I thought that’s where you go if you don’t want to fight — you go chill in Canada,” he said. The segment has been posted online (www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcJn5XlbSFk) by an outraged Canadian who titled it “How to Lose Friends and Alienate Countries.” Fox News was not immediately available for comment. Ottawa-based Conservative commentator Geoff Norquay called the segment “insulting and beneath contempt.” “In a week when we lost four more brave soldiers, Canada deserves better from this so-called news network,” he said. “I really wish I subscribed to Fox News so I could cancel it.” Steve Staples, director of the Ottawa-based Rideau Institute, called it a “shameful display” to laugh it up at the expense of families who have lost loved ones. “The dismissal of Canadian efforts in Afghanistan simply rubs salt in the wounds of Canadian families whose sons and daughters have been injured or killed in the war.” Liberal MP and defence critic Denis Coderre urged Canadians to write to Fox News to protest the panel and said Canada should raise the issue with U.S. President Barack Obama. “What’s a disgrace is that a lot of people are watching this and it is promoting stereotypes,” he said. Calling Canada’s military “the best little army in the world,” retired Gen. Lewis MacKenzie lambasted the American panelists as “distasteful” and showing an “appalling ignorance.” The bodies of the four fallen Canadian soldiers will be repatriated to Canada today, three days after their deaths in two separate bomb arracks in Afghanistan. Flag-draped caskets of Master Cpl. Scott Vernelli, 28, Cpl. Tyler Crooks, 24, Trooper Jack Bouthillier, 20, and Trooper Corey Joseph Hayes, 22, will arrive at CFB Trenton for a repatriation ceremony. cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Canada/2009/03/22/8847666-sun.html

Dis....that's typical of Fox News on all fronts....even CNN to some degree. It's boorish Rush Limbaugh-style journalism. Sometimes, the ignorance is laughable.....trouble is, a lot of the viewers swallow it. I remember when Ann Coulter was interviewed on The Fifth Estate, after remarks she made when Bush was greeted by anti-war protesters in Ottawa. Coulter

What miffs me the most about these comments is that they probably knew what they were doing when they said them.
Still, I couldn't resist dropping a comment on Canoe.ca. In summary I said,
I remember when our troops first rolled into Afghanistan a few short months after 9/11. They had "I love NY" written across the back of some of their LAV III's.
It's a shame that American panelists or journalists can be so out of touch; more so when we take into account they made these comments from the security of their studios.
To Fox News I say, if you don't want to stand behind the troops supporting your cause, feel free to stand in front of them. That means getting out of your safe studio and standing a post!
Otherwise, get current with the program. Yours is out of date!
I was looking on the Fox network to see where I could respond but didn't have the time to go completely through the website. If you guys find one please post it. Thanks.
Important to note that this is NOT a reflection of the American public; just one news service who feels they should be competing for ratings.
Cheers.

Fox News is only relevant to the most conservative and bigoted of American Republicans. Truthfully, I consider their networking closer to fiction than news.
Maybe this was all just a comedy skit. Haha! I say.

When the Republicans are complaining of media bias on the campaign trail, CNN is usually the first one to get named. I don't mind looking at a pretty girl doing the news. I love CNBC for that. Erin Burnett is both hot AND intelligent.

I'd say its shameful and disgusting, but can ignorance really be shameful and disgusting?
Maybe we can say that their willingess to be ignorant is shameful and disgusting.
On the other hand, he seemed to know about an obscure (to them) Canadian general suggesting that we need to stand-down for a year. If he knew that, than how can he possibly be ignorant of the fact that we are there, and heavily engaged?

Peter has never found a camera or microphone he didn't like. The only time he shuts up is when reporters ask him pertinent questions.

I just saw the clip on an Internet PC here at work.
What makes this worse is that the panel knew exactly what they were doing and saying. They were deliberately trying to get a rise out of Canadians and they've done just that.
IMO, the worst possible thing DND could do at this point is make it a huge deal. Granted what the FOX panel did was deliberate and thought out. They even had little smiles on their faces when they were discussing it.
So, why give them more publicity by making it a big deal?
What they did was ignorant and I think a lot of viewers, Americans included, think the same way.
Cheers.

Not good enough. Oh, and I still want that 2 minutes. “However, I realize that my words may have been misunderstood,” Gutfeld said in a statement released by Fox News.Oh, I see ... so it's not HIS fault ... got ya' ... “It was not my intent to disrespect the brave men, women and families of the Canadian military, and for that I apologize.Well, he managed to do just that in many cases. “Red Eye is a satirical take on the news, in which all topics are addressed in a lighthearted, humorous and ridiculous manner.”Even when these soldiers are dying? Misunderstood is used in the wrong context. If anything this guy and his panel have really misunderstood and continually misunderstand Canada's contribution to their war effort. PUTZ!!!

The sad thing is not that he said it, IMHO. It's that there are many - both south of the border and in this country - who share his uneducated opinion. FWIW I say let the idiot talk. He has the right to say what he wants, and it's those rights that people die for. In the meantime, as long as the common man knows the message - as long as this fool and those like him are confined to broadcasting at 3 am, all we're doing is generating publicity for someone who doesn't deserve it.

There's a right to free speech, but it shouldn't be without correction. Say whatever you want, but if you're wrong or piss me off I'm gonna speak right back. That's how it works, this is how it works. IMO, anyway.

That's how it works, this is how it works. IMO, anyway. I know (and understand) what you're saying - but who really is benefiting from all this hubub? The guy who said it. He's gone from being the host of some insignificant 3am time-slot news show to being in the news himself. If someone who knows something, or has even the slightest crumb of influence, says it then fine - go after them. Show the world what an idiot they are. Hell - I actually watched Larry King the night they interviewed Paul and Danny about the seal hunt. But this - this is just the posturing of some little man who came up with a big scheme on how to raise his personal profile. Better had we let him wallow in the invisibile depths of late night television.

I'm not sure if anything is relegated to the insignificance of an early morning slot any longer, TNG.
With the Internet....everything's viewable at any time, worldwide....especially controversial material.
But I hear what you're saying. The more we make of it, the more Fox plans a promotion for him.
