Spector says he had a reliable source tell him the Lightning were interested in SK. They need a RW. tinyurl.com/yhbc3gkEdit: changed long url to tiny one

This is going to sound very obvious but try: www.tinyurl.comEDIT: maybe Gainey should leak the names that Lawton was offering.

Straight up for Hedman lol.
They were less than easy to deal with in the Vinny saga. Hard to believe there would be cordial conversation leading to a deal here. Never know though.
Seriously speaking, if they were interested, I'd consider a swap for Paul Ranger.

He's got a year left on his deal, and MAB's deal is a year. I don't see how one affects the other. When and if Markov comes back this season we're looking at the following ... Markov - Hamrlik Spacek - Gorges Gill-Mara O'Byrne-Ranger-MAB If we're way out of the playoff picture, we can deal away parts. Anyone of those bottom four would garner some interest at the deadline. If we're in the playoffs, then Ranger adds size and a little bit of skill. Roster sizes go up, and we can then carry 9 defenders. Wouldn't be a bad insurance policy. Now, if Skost comes back and plays well, but still wants out he becomes worth more than Paul Ranger imo.

There are only 23 roster spots... You want to use 8 (when O'Byrne comes back) and 9 if/when Markov comes back. We'd get nickels on the dollar in a trade because we'd be forced to move at least someone.
My point is that nothing has changed in TB (unless there was an injury I don't know about?) to make them want to deal Ranger now compared to a week ago. It was MAB or a trade to me. Not both.

Who's to say anyone inquired as to his availability? We don't know if Andrei will be back. All we have is a guess at this point. It's going to be by committee till he is back, so the bigger and more diverse the committee the better. If we're out of the hunt, we move the one(s) we don't want. If we are, maybe we move one in a package.

If due diligence was done (a huge assumption on my part knowing some of the other actions of this management group) an inquiry ought to have been made. TB is carrying 10 (ten!) defensemen on their active roster, which is unusual, and have been rumoured to be looking to unload at least one of them since preseason. I quite like Paul Ranger. He could grow into a 2nd pairing defenseman. If the deal was him for SK alone, I would likely do it despite my belief that it makes little sense to trade SK.

Really Red? Do you think they wouldn't do anything after losing Markov & O'Byrne? I fully expected them to do something, but it wouldn't surprise me if they didn't perform their due diligence before signing an also-ran like MAB. I'm not sure if that answers your question, or not.

Does the Lightning have anybody with a lon term overpriced contract that he isn't living up to? Just like before the Lightning are a one line team, the difference is that Lecavalier is no longer on that line... In other words they could be as competitive as they are but save that 10mil salary which they can't afford anyway. Again, the problem there is not Vincent's 7mil cap hit, it's his 10mil salary. If not for Barrie, Lecavalier would be here already and since Koules is on the virge of buying Barrie, Vinny's time in Tampa is counted, NTC or not. Is Gainey still part of that puzzle? Hockey wise, it's not as enticing as it once might have been, there are more and more question marks around Lecavalier, but you can bet that Molson/Boivin don't want to let a marketing gold mine like Vinny slip by them. HABS would still have to pay a lot for him, not because Vinny's value is so high but because it has to balance out cap wise. In other words I can see both Ks and Pleks going the other way, comes up close cap wise but TB has more manageable contracts on their hands.

I believe he is no longer the player he once was, thanks to the wrist and shoulder injuries. The Habs don't need help with "marketing gold mines", they need help getting impact players to win games.

The overall talent level/management of his team certainly hasn't helped in recent years. You're right about his injuries perhaps taking their toll as well.
But he's set for life and has a Stanley Cup ring. I wonder if some players never regain that drive/passion that it takes to win it all, once they've been through the rigors of a Cup drive. Not saying it's true in Vinnie's case....just wondering.
He's going to be hard-pressed to make Team Canada, is he not?

If he does make Team Canada, it'll be based on reputation. I saw a Tampa game recently and he doesn't seem to have that spark anymore. Mind you, it was only one game. As others have said, perhaps his injuries have caught up with him.
I was glad Gainey didn't acquire him at the time. He reminds me a bit of Denis Savard when the Habs got him in 1990 i.e. A declining asset acquired at great cost with a big contract and impossible expectations.
I don't see Sergei going to Tampa. They may want him but there are better dancing partners out there for the Habs, imo.

The least of TB's problems is scoring at the moment. They need to stop letting in 4 goals per game and Sergei won't help that.

In other words I can see both Ks and Pleks going the other way, comes up close cap wise but TB has more manageable contracts on their hands. My cousin Vinny is not even close to being a Jean Beliveau as was once proferred. He is big, strong, fast and possibly even better than anyone we have on the roster. He is not a top 5, 10 or even 20 player in the NHL. He is not 23 years old either. No way does he deserve to be on team Canada. Our #1 Smurf like is showing the other 4 lines how it's done, 100% effort, hustle, win the small battles, get the loose pucks, work hard and eventually you get lucky. Don't get me wrong. I'm a Hab's fan and happier to be 5 and 5 than 0 - 6 - 1. I've been fooled too many times with a short win streak to think all our problems are behind us. We are 1 - 5 - 4 in regulation. Our one win was against a mediocre team. Price is still underperforming. Our "D" makes too many mistakes. While I love Bergereons shot, his 5 on 5 play looks like he's playing 3 card monte against NYC's finest. Gill looks like a Great Dane trying to swat a fly. My money is on the fly. Sergei needs to learn that he can't make demands like Crosby can, even though Crosby never does. Sergei and Andrei are talented players that have consistantly under performed with lack of effort and commitment. Andrei is not a top 10 pick and definately not a top 3 who dropped to 10 because of health concerns. The whole team s learning watching the waterbugs and the effort they put out is much better than we accepted from Kovalev, 41 games a year. It seems things are slowly improving to where the team should have been in the second year of the five year plan. Small steps in the right direction. Sergei costs us nothing in Hamilton and down the line he could become a good player or more valuable in a trade.

I don't usually get a good look at a lot of teams until the NFL season is over. As yet I've only seen one TB game and I can't say they would turn down that offer if the return was reasonable. That being said, the Lightning are carrying 9 defensemen on their roster and would probably be looking to consolidate talent. I suspect that any of Smaby, Ranger or Walker would be available for picks or prospects that don't need to clear waivers. Halak might interest them, but keep in mind they have Ramo in the pipeline (if he comes back to the NHL...). They also may not quite be willing to give up on Mike Smith yet, who they effectively traded Brad Richards for. I'm also not sure who we'd be looking for in return. So after all that, I could have just written and been done with it. Sigh. I usually start these posts out by writing my mind and come to a conclusion or at least infer something from what I write. I can't think of a way where both sides can satisfy their needs from a trade unless TB is willing to part with futures, and we're willing to accept them. I still believe the best course for Sergei is to keep him in the fold and bring him up eventually.

I'm getting the impression it won't matter what Montreal does, Sergei simply doesn't want to be here any more. Halak? Would Chicago be interested? One thing that comes to mind, though. Alex Tanguay was asked if he wanted to come back to the Habs. His answer IIRC was "it depends on who the GM is." I don't know if this has anything to do with Sergie, but this comment comes back to me from time to time. As far as Sergei-to-TB is concerned, I keep envisioning Lecavalier in the mix somewhere. If TB is interested in Sergei, then what would the return be? They do need cap relief, but OTOH how much more salary can Gainey take on? Deals are tougher to make these days. It's about moving the equivalent in salaries more than anything else or so it seems. And if that's the case how does Gainey move enough salary out of Montreal to bring in Vinny? Cheers.
