Stajan & Mayers are UFA so probably gone. White is a good pickup. NHLSCAP.com has him as RFA so the Flames can probably re-sign him. Most of the Leaf offense is gone now.
Phauneuf has 4 more years left at 6.5 - a huge cap hit & he just isn't worth it. I guess the rebuild through the draft is officially done.
I love that quote from Burke " we like players that play hard because they are hard to play against". How profound.

well put jkr .. Burkey can't seem to get out of the stone age with this one. Their scoring will drop and their dirty hits will go up. Keep your heads up boys!

another one: Blake & Toskala for Giguere. Giguere is now the Ducks back up & has one more year at 6 million. A cynical person might say that Burke is busy trying to keep the Leafs out of that 29th spot they occupy now. tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=308472

Guys, I'm going to lock this one. Like Mattais already pointed out we have three threads on this one.
No offence there, JD.
Cheers.

Personally, I think if he can get Phaneuf back to where he was a couple of seasons ago, this is a steal for Toronto. What have they really given up? Hagman and Stajan are players, but Stajan's a pending UFA. White's ok, but he's small and prone to some egregious errors. To me, they're all players you might want as somewhat supporting cast. We have lots of those, but ours have contracts that make them distasteful to prospective suitors. It all hinges on what Phaneuf does with his career. He is by far the most talented player of the seven and usually the team getting the best player is the winner. Toronto got younger and picked up some more offense from the back. Geeze, if Phaeuf was coming our way and we'd given up say, Gorges (White), Gionta (Hagman), and a spare part for Mayers along with someone to take STajan's place (he's the toughie cause we don't have a player like him, but he's also a UFA), you don't think that would be worthwhile? despite Phaneuf's weaknesses, which I think are temporary anyway. He probably just needs out of his hometown area, just like Lats and Ribs with us. I think Burke made an excellent deal. I could be wrong and Phaneuf will Flame out, but I'd take those odds. Notice Burke's MO? The first thing he does is go after difference makers. Gainey on the other hand, isn't willing to take those risks. White, Hagman and Stajan are good but replaceable parts. Phaneuf was and will be an all star again. Burke won this one by far. Gainey? He keeps telling us that nooooobody want to make a deal.

I'm not sure Phaneuf will be that mega star his coming out party was with Hamrlik insulating him.Since Hamrs departure it's been a steady decline not unlike the Beauchemin decline without Niedermeyer and Komis without Markov.I will hand it to Burke he took all the talk of being 29th in the league off the front pages he's a master spin doctor and he does it with name players. In he end we'll see what he builds but I wouldn't worry so much about what they do what will Gainey do? He's has some pieces in which he can turn into assets even if thats just stock piling picks our once full cupboard needs more restocking because it hasn't produced any blue chippers especially up front.
