Check this letter from the owners of the Florida Panthers.... basically telling the fans.... we are starting from scratch... panthers.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=517345I guess that's one less team to worry about.....

Were I a fan, I'd be discouraged. There's a lot of hard working talent there, and the staff has gotten a lot out of them.

That might be the first time a team has ever put in print that their strategy is to tank this year and suck next year too.

They face the question: Do we continue patching this team up year after year an persue the vicious circle of mediocrity or do we start from scratch, establish the identity we want and build from there. Seems like they made their choice. I hope Gauthier placed a call for Horton.

With his wonderful trade, and public statement earlier today, I'm feeling sick, thinking that we have Mike Milbury running the team now. But hey! Au moins il est québecois!

I hope Gauthier placed a call for Horton. I kind of liked how our top two lines performed before injury. They seemed to get a little chemistry going. So I hope we don't make any additions to our scoring lines. Our bottom two lines needs to be upgraded IMO. I always liked Gregory Campbell as I think he could thrive in a shutdown role. Maybe beside Moore and Moen? ?? He also has some good leadership skills ( well at least from what I have read on him).

...I don't trust AK any further than I can throw him. Which version will show up? The disinterested, lazy player that coasts and gets by on his talent alone or the more involved guy that we saw before his injury... I think Horton on the Pleks line would add some much needed size and grit to the top lines, in the form of a guy that can actually play on a top 6...

Horton is the type of young player you keep - he's not yet 25 & he's proven he can score. He won't be going anywhere.

Perhaps you are right....... but you must consider that Horton has his own consistancy issues. That being said I think we need some upgrades on our bottom six. That should be the priority. As much as I like Lapierre, Metropolit, D'Ago or S.Kostitsyn they provide little in terms of leadership, toughness or defensive presence. IMO The successful teams have players playing on their bottom lines that bring those three characteristic. Plus these players come alot more cheaply then the top six type players. My wish list for the deadline should not be expensive and I think the following players could be had. 1) Gregory Campbell- brings leadership, and defensive presense to the third line. Also lead Florida in hits last season with 202 hits. Could a Campbell-Moore-Moen line be counted on to provide some sort of shutdown presence? ?? 2) JF Jacques- Nasty hitter who could fit into a Chris Neil type role. A middleweight fighter that plays physical. Not a supergoon and I think thats a good thing especially after that Laraque experiment. 3) Brad May- leadership and nasty. He is over-the-hill but I would take him for his presence in the room and his ability to throw some nice bodychecks. May-Jacques- Ryan White should be plenty nasty for a fourth line.

...definitely agree that grit and leadership on the lower is an issue. I want these lines to tire down opposing dmen with constant nagging forechecking. That's why I felt Moore was a step in the right direction.
I think in the right setup Lapierre could provide that, like he did with Lats and Kosto last year.

I think I saw some article or such that questioned Horton's work ethic. That could be what's holding him back. Reminds me of a certain goaltender.

One thing that i can't stand about his game is the way he bails out on his body checks. He gains speed, lines someone up and just before he makes contact he throws on the breaks and losses all his momentum. Zero force behind his bodychecks..........
