The rumor comes from Eklund, so the question mark in the title of the topic is not so much about "will it happen", but rather "could it happen"? Is there not some kind of a deadline to sign players from the KHL? Can a non signed players (in NHL terms) be added to the lineup at any time during the season/post season even? Hypothetically speaking, would a team then be able to sign Jagr (admitting he has no tie with an NHL team at the moment) and go into the playoffs with him? Somehow, that seems improbable. I believe the player would have to clear waivers first .... not sure though. RS is the resident expert on the CBA ....

Yes, he would have to clear waivers because he's played as a professional in another league during this season. So once you ink Esche, Jagr or any KHL, SEL, etc player they immediately go on waivers and are up for grabs.
Esche had a pretty good season in the KHL this year. I'm not certain anyone would claim him (though I might claim him in a blocking maneuvre) so it could be a decent risk.

iirc, some team in Montreal may have had a goalie available at the trade deadline.
good on Philly for consistently avoiding that one important ingredient.
