Lalime wasn't so terrible. He took a lot of flack when the Sens' offense dried up year in and year out.

He took a lot of flack when the Sens' offense dried up year in and year out. no, he wasn't so terrible . . . just terribly mediocre. and there are a lot of those available. . . and some a tad above. I'd pass on Patrick. that's all. by the way, what's it say when gpaoleis are making the first move? seems there's a lot of worry about a paycheck for being a backup goalie next year!

My choice would be Biron.
Unexpensive, quality goalie who's no longer looking for a starter spot. He's also a great veteran in a room, can definitely act as Price big brother but beyond that, he's also extremely vocal, VERY good with the media and as such can definitely be a guy to help the young Québecois cope with the local pressure.

If his contract isn't out of line, Doc, and his character is as you say, he would be a good choice,

I think Biron is the target as well.

I think Biron is the target as well. Can't say if he is or not. He'd be mine. But maybe Goat is looking for an under 1mil solution.

Wonder if the organization is looking at Curtis Sanford as a backup. He did extremely well when he filled in for Luongo a few years back.
Maybe bring in a backup for Desjardins and let him hold the fort.
Just some thoughts.
Cheers.

He also seemed to do well with the Bulldogs last year.

I think with a starter like Price, who is coming off a couple of shaky seasons, they will need a backup who has some experience, can provide a mentoring voice and is established as a possible 1B goalie.
I think Biron fits that bill exceptionally well and if he's available for anything under 1.5 million, it's likely very well spent money.

I kind of like Marty Biron, I really do… but I wouldn’t sign him. I think it’s just courting controversy. You bring in Biron and you’re just asking for conflict; French/English, East/West, Butterfly/Standup, Arrogant/Modest, whatever. Plus, Biron is only like 32, still young for a goalie, so you bring in the “should he be the starter and/or resigned” angle too. No, I think it’s too much for Price, and could be just another wedge in his development. I would bring in a nobody, somebody that garners absolutely no feelings whatsoever, one way or the other. Somebody like Johan Hedberg. He’s a nothing, but still more than capable of playing 30-45 games if need be, and provide decent goaltending in the process. He’ll come cheap, probably at or under $1 million, which will help our cap situation, and at 38 years of age he isn’t going to be signed for longer than a year. He’d be the perfect short-term insurance policy, if you ask me. No controversy, no media interviews, no personality, nothing to stand in the way of Price. If we are going to hitch our horse to Price by trading Halak, then we might as well ride it for all it’s worth…

You raise an interesting point BC.
Ultimately Biron is still my first choice...i think he's the best of the available goalies that will come in at less than $1.5 million. But certainly with Biron we could be a few bad Price performances away from hearing the B-I-R-O-N chants all over the Centre Bell.

...so the plan should be to bring on a guy who's potentially bad enough/in the shadow enough not to overshadow Price ?
Wasn't that the main idea behind dealing fan darling Huet and eventually using rather unknown and "projected-to-be-never-more-than-a-backup" Halak? I mean Price started out as the undisputed #1 in October. What if we end up winning more with Hedberg/Nittymaki than with "superstar" Carey Price ?
Really, if we're down to making sure no goalie can overtake Price, then I'd just use Sanford for 500K.

Niittymaki can be had for 1 million What about Halak. He could be offered a one-year contract and if he gets more as a free agent, we get a compensatory pick. What? He's gone?

I like Biron as well but with the Ellis trade we'll have to see. Biron still maybe the choice depending on how much of a paycut Ellis is willing to take.

Seriously, forget controversy, a guy like Biron would be ideal, and Ellis an adequate facsimile (though again, Habs management isn't making a token effort at getting francophones out there...)
