I'd take Pleks 5 million over Marleau's 7 million.
Pavelski's is a little high too, but I could live with it.

Pavelski's deal is very close to what I think we could have signed Plekanec to after his 07-08 season.

Pavelski was arguably their best player in the playoffs this year. They're banking that he can continue at a pace close to that.
Marleau's cap hit doesn't surprise me, but his willingness to take a 4 year deal for the same amount per year does.
Were I a Sharks fan I'd be happy with the Pavelski deal and I suppose happy with the Marleau deal. At least with Marleau you're not committed super long term.

Pavelski's deal is very close to what I think we could have signed Plekanec to after his 07-08 season. I think the secret to success with the cap will be signing players before they deserve huge increases - the way SJ just did with Pavelski, and we should've done with Plekanec (or Ryder, or Souray, or many others.... before they could leave for more $ than we could afford.) That, plus getting contributions from guys still under the rookie cap, and you've got great odds of a strong team...

That, plus getting contributions from guys still under the rookie cap, and you've got great odds of a strong team... As much as I too think we should have signed Plekanec to such a deal, we ended up saving 1.25M last season on that $4M sum, which gave us some additional space for Cammalleri, etc. Over that 4 year span we're spending $2.75M more in cap space, and in later seasons where that cap space is at least slightly less valuable (1.25M last season is worth 1.31M this season, and so on). Other players, sure. Not locking up Ryder early on was a mistake. Souray was actually signed for 3 years in 2004, which at the time wouldn't take him to UFA status. However, after the lockout and subsequent CBA changes he became a UFA. 3 years was a lot considering how injured he always was. I forgot that Plekanec was not a UFA after his fantastic 07-08 season. He was signed for 2 years in 2007. I'll never understand why this team's management don't sign players through UFA seasons while the player still has RFA seasons left. It might be because RFA seasons are cheaper but I think in the long run you end up saving money and get stability.

I think Plekanec up and down performances over the years and disappearing act when the going gets tough were making him a risky bet.
