Making room for Savard it says. From TSN.
With Marc Savard's return to the lineup imminent, the Boston Bruins shed some salary on Monday as they sent defenceman Matt Hunwick to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for prospect Colby Cohen.
The 21-year old Cohen, who made his NHL debut earlier this season with the Avalanche, will be sent to the Bruins' AHL affiliate in Providence. He was held scoreless in three games with the Avs this season.
Meanwhile in 22 games this season with the Bruins, the 25-year old Hunwick has one goal and two assists. In 164 career games, all with the Bruins, the Warren, Michigan native has 13 goals and 32 assists.
Hunwick was originally selected in the seventh round, 224th overall, by the Bruins in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.
Hunwick will earn $1.55 million this season and is set to become an unrestricted free agent at season's end. Cohen meanwhile is in the first year of his entry level deal that would see him earn $787,500 at the NHL level or just $65,000 at the AHL level.

From what I've been reading, there are more than a few Avs fans scratching their heads at this one. They liked Cohen a lot, and with a plethora of dmen on the roster already, they're at a loss over who stays and who goes.

I wish the NHL sent out a monthly report on teams salaries and how they calculated it .... cause I am still unsure how the Bruins are under the cap now, and moreover, when Savard returns they will be very hard pressed to get under ....
I'll assume that the LTIR rules allowed them to go over the cap, since they are currently at approximately 62.5 million ....
If we look at the lineup, they have -
Bergeron (4.75) , Lucic (4.083) , Horton (4.00) , Ryder (4.00), Krejci (3.75), Seguin (3.55), Sturm (3.50), Wheeler (2.20), Recchi (1.95), Caron (1.10), Campbell (1.10) and Marchand (0.822) ...
I believe that's the 12 forwards that are normally in their lineup ... so that's 34.805 million in forwards.
When Savard returns he will have approximately 3 million of cap space to add to that (until they delete a player) , so that bumps it up to 37.805 million
The defense consists of Chara (7.50) , Siedenberg (3.25), Ferrence (2.25), Boychuck (1.875), Stuart (1.675), McQuaid (0.625) .... and Hunwick had 0.413 of his 1.45 used in Boston.
I'm sure there is a little error here, since I don't know the roster for every game, but the defense contributed about 17.588 million approximately
So that totals = 37.805 + 17.588 = 55.393 million
Now there goalies cost 6.25 in cap space = 61.643 million
And they have 0.86 million on the books in buyouts ... so that has them at 62.503 million minimum ....
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I guess that's a long winded way of determining that Ryder will be a Maple Leaf before Christmas ...

I guess that's a long winded way of determining that Ryder will be a Maple Leaf before Christmas ... I'm kind of on the fence with this one. It's entirely possible Mike could end up in Toronto, but for me, anyway, it would suck huge. The Leafs have problems scoring goals and I think Mike would do well there. He wouldn't be able to do it himself, granted, but it wouldn't be all that bad of a move by Toronto. As for the numbers, I could care less if you're off a bit, Skilly. At least, for us anyway, it's a starting point. But here's the thing for me. When I look at those numbers I get a new appreciation for Gauthier and the way he's managing our numbers. Granted, Markov going down hurt us, but at the same time it freed up some much-needed cap room. To be honest, I don't know what our numbers were before Markov went down. Were we in trouble/close before the injury? Cheers.
