On Hot Stove tonight they were saying Montreal has inquired about Oilers Hemsky. Another GM was quoted as saying the Oilers can keep Hemsky they are asking way too much for him.

We'd certainly win the "How Many Players Can You Fit in a VW Beetle?" Cup.

The only saving grace with players like him and Penner are that they have another year on their deals. ESPN has Oilers asking for high picks and top prospect for Penner. Prices seem high this year, supply and demand I guess, more buyers than sellers? In long run may be best for franchise if we were out of playoff race and sellers at this point. Could dump a lot of contract for top picks and good young players.

That's where Brian Burke far exceeds any Montreal GM of the past decade. He evaluates and the isn't afraid to pull the trigger. Most of us laughed at the trade when he got Kessel ... based on this year it looks like Seguin is a Kessel clone. It's not my job to decide if Penner (size, grit, we need it in spades) is worth giving up two complete unknowns that Timmins is high on (where our recent history is brutal) .... but I woulnd't be shy pulling the trigger on a deal where we lose draft picks.

IMHO, unless we can bring our team to the next level, it might be the wrong time to pull of any big trades. Also, if we're supposed to be dealing from a position of strength I'm not so sure where that strength is.
The demand seems to be for defencemen. We have plenty of them, but it's a good thing given all of the injuries.
Couldn't tell you what trade would actually put us over the top, that is, would help us compete against Boston and Philadelphia (or Tampa Bay for that matter).
We're just not competing of late and it's tough to know just at level the team can bring themselves to.
Cheers.

I wouldn't move our first round pick and top prospect, I imagine it be Leblanc right now, unless we get marquee player back. Can't see Penner or Hemsky being it. We are a fringe playoff team, a couple of players away from Cup contention.
If I couldn't find a trade to put us in Cup contention, even as a dark horse, I would trade Spacek for first rounder, Kostitsny for young defenseman like Franson. Phoenix can also just take Gomez and not give us Jovo back. Just to remove the cap hit I would be satisfied with. I would prepare for the long term

I would prepare for the long term If we had both Markov and Gorges having their regular type season in our lineup, I could see us trading for some help up front. But we are missing far too much to be a contender. I think our best option is to be a bit of a seller. Kostitsyn would be the big piece I would dangle, seeing what was traded for Fisher, Versteeg, and what is rumoured for Hemsky, Penner. Like you said, if Phoenix wants Gomez, they can have him. I don't care about the return. I wouldn't look to trade anything else, but I would listen. Just get rid of Kostitsyn to help build for the future and and Gomez to make room on the cap if we need it.

Rick Moffat was just on FAN590 and said Gauthier is still looking for defensive help and a power forward. Habs want to increase offensive scoring and address the size issue. He expects Gauthier to be pro-active before Monday's trade deadline. He also said a lot of speculation Chris Neil coming to Montreal and the return is suppose to be around a third round pick. Habs want a physical body with 2 head to head games with Bruins left in March. After the melee last time the teams meet.

Lots discussed tonight.
Habs seemed to have passed on Phillips with the acquisition of Sopel. Lebrun said they were definitely at the front of the list of teams interested, but essentially gave up.
Statsny isn't available in Colorado, but Liles definitely is. Foote and Hejduk no.
Richards continues to be discussed despite his health.
LA doesn't want to move Schenn for anyone at this point. Don't blame them.

I watched that too. I also temper any comments by GM's that so and so is untouchable. If they get the right offer, no one is untouchable, but GM's can't really say that.
By saying Schenn is not on the block, he drives up the price. BTW, despite his points in the WJC, I'm still not that keen on Schenn anyway. But no one listens to me (probably with good cause).

I think Schenn be a good player but not an outstanding player. If I was the Kings and could get a top six player still under team control for 3-4 more years, along with a first round pick or top prospect, and that player meant a shot at Cup I would move Schenn.
