One of the best stories ever told on the big screen. What I remember about this scene the most is explaining why they chose to charge in a hopeless situation. I'm hoping people are talking about this scene 50 years from now. The charge at Pelennor was good, but for my money I preferred the one at Helm's Deep. A little less realistic, I suppose, with the charge down the steep incline led by the wizard who blinds all the orcs (as an aside, why didn't the bad guys ever send their orcs to school to learn how to form schiltrons) but after the rest of the (very well done) Battle of Helm's Deep it made a very satisfying conclusion.

Was there an explanation, Dis? I remember telling Dis Jr, "... they don't have anything to lose." (then tried explaning that) Incidently, if you go to IMDB.com (trivia) for this movie, you'll see that the part where the king rides along the front rank, touching spears with his sword, was an impromptu part by actor, Bernard Hill, who was simply warming up for the scene. They left it in. Tres cool!

Thanks TNG. I had forgotten 'Gandalf's Charge' so to speak. However, I think that whole story surrounding The Battle of Helms Deep was extremely well done. The arrival of the Elves in support of man, the young boys being separated from their mothers so they could bear arms against the Orcs. Very well shot, very well scripted and acted, and emotional as well. Cheers.

One word. "Lollygaggers". The best rant in a movie, ever.

I always thought this was a great scene. Understated, yet powerful. Just a game to both of them, they both almost smile. Almost. Great acting, in my opinion.

I like that scene but I don't like Pacino because he over acts. It reminds me too much of SNL's "I'm ACTING!"
Daniel Day Lewis is much more into a character like Gangs of NY and Last Mahican.
Two of my favorite scenes......
Death for a noble cause is better then passing through a lifetime of mediocrity....

Cheers.
