I think it great to see two Philly dirt bags get traded to the southern abyss where they will both disappear forever!!

I was watching TSN this morning and Holmgren was very emotional. If nothing else he's told his players that it doesn't matter how much you make or how long you've signed on for. You're still a marketable commodity.
Players now have to know that anyone signing a long-term contract under Holmgren, including his new goaltender, has no guarantee that they'll be staying for the long-haul. They'll have to get that in writing.
Cheers.

.great hands, but it seems he has a less than austere locker room attitude and may not be afraid of the 9th commandment. with such great hands , just be thankful it wasn't the 10th commandment. 99% of the NHL are liars .... especially contract time of year

I think it great to see two Philly dirt bags get traded to the southern abyss where they will both disappear forever!! I (almost) feel sorry for Jeff Carter. He signs an 11-year extension with Philly just last season, that doesn't even kick in until this year with a NTC that doesn't go into effect until 2012.....and he gets traded to a backwater hockey market in Columbus for the next 11 years and there's nothing he can do about it. Mike Richards is a punk, but at least he's going to a young playoff team that's getting better and playing in sunny southern California. Kopitar, Richards, Stoll, Doughty, Johnson....there's some nice pieces there.

chatter [fwiw] is that Carter is none to happy.
he'll get over it once he starts cashing those cheques again.

On the positive side, I wonder how Rick Nash was feeling once he heard the news. Nash/Carter/Umberger ... one big line with all sorts of wrecking potential. I think that by acquiring Richards, LA may just have vaulted themselves to the next level. He'll be playing behind Kopitar and that's a formidable one-two punch. I don't know, though, man ... there has to be something more to last nights' wheeling and dealing. That said, Chris Pronger's name has been mentioned here at work when we talked about the Philadelphia situation. Some of the guys I've talked to are suggesting that there was a rift between Pronger and one of either Richards or Carter. Honestly, I couldn't tell you one way or the other, though. Cheers.

a long time rumor, Dis.
also that Carter was a bit of a partier, and that all Holgren did was clear out some problems. side benefit: cap space.

It was thought the acknowledged rift between Richards and Pronger had been resolved. I guess not. Hard to believe they'd sign both Richards and Carter to really long deals, then side with the aged vet. That said, putting aside the rift, I really think Holmgren saw that this was becoming Giroux's team. He's their best forward most nights imo. Briere too. Moving Richards and Carter now gets max return at least.

Lock up the guys for the long-term, get them comfortable that they'll be retiring as Flyers, then pump them out because of a rift, cap issues, what have you ... One question for you, though; does anyone know if Pronger has a track record of controversy in the past? Cheers.

I've been thinking about this all day, but IMHO, both Gauthier and Holmgren have have taken chances here ... Holmgren moreso. Gauthier at least has some (unproven) depth to rely if in the event Markov's knee goes kablooy ... Holmgren, OTOH, isn't just taking a chance, he's actually unzipped his fly. I haven't had any time to check out what the fan base is thinking right now, but imagine what it will be like if these deals simply don't work out. IMHO, Holmgren's 'Johnson' is squarely on the table now. Cheers.

There were wild rumours about his depature from the Oilers - infidelity, etc. Turns out it was his St Louis born wife. She couldn't handle Edmonton winters. Pronger is a big presence in any room he populates. He can be as abbrasive off the ice as on. I agree with you on a business philosphy. Moreso, there's no way I take the side of a 35 year old blue liner who's not in the long term picture. It's hard to believe Holmgren would sign those two guys if he had a truly bad opinion of their presence in the locker room. Maybe he thought it was under control, and things just went too far this year. Oh to be a fly on the wall.

Funny, I heard that, ahem, cough, Mr Pronger had paid too much attention to a female staffer on the Oilers, and that Mrs Pronger had made an ultimatum. Harsh winters, competition, whatever, the common thread seems to be that Mrs Pronger wanted them out of Edmonton. The winter story is certainly plausible, but fits just about anyone leaving Edmonton, which makes it awfully convenient. Not saying it isn't true, and I'm just normally skeptical anyway. Highly skeptical. In fact, I'm often obsessively, pathologically skeptical.
